- geekworking, on 03/06/2008, -1/+39This is one big step closer to a real final product.
The biggie is allowing some configuration on the panel (height & position, but not width). They also added a bunch of new options to the system settings. The system settings now looks pretty close to 3.x. Kubuntu pushed out the updates in their KDE4 repos this morning. - wontstoptalking, on 03/06/2008, -0/+33Yeah, I plan on switching from Gnome when it comes out. Awesome.
- Aeuta, on 03/06/2008, -1/+32Great work...I look forward trying it out again when 4.1 comes out :)...Sadly I am still on Gnome
Competition is great :) - postaldave, on 03/06/2008, -6/+21good thing it still has an ugly ass clock just so i know that i am still using KDE. (smiles)
- moneyswears, on 03/06/2008, -15/+29KDE4 really demonstrates how bloated, overhyped, and slow both Vista and OSX really are. I've been waiting 10 years to stop using windows entirely, and it looks like I'll finally be able to live the dream once 4.1 is out.

- iofthestorm, on 03/06/2008, -1/+10Are you serious?
- phaedrusiszen, on 03/06/2008, -1/+10This is not an obvious answer to switch.
It's a good chance to look at an alternative.
You can, at any point, give KDE4 a shot. See how it feels for you. If you prefer Gnome, that's your choice. Welcome (back) to Gnome and enjoy it.
If you find KDE suits you better, you're welcome there too. Just realize KDE 4.1 is the real point they think it'll be suitable for day-to-day. - RoboDonut, on 03/06/2008, -8/+16Whatever happened to desktop environments that didn't put a huge emphasis on silly desktop widgets? :(
- Sammi84, on 03/06/2008, -1/+8I'm to lazy to check it out in it's current state, which is intentionally lacking - I get the "release early, release often" development philosophy/model, so I'm not complaining. I am looking forward to it being in Ubuntu 8.04 though. Will definitively give it a go then.
- geoken, on 03/06/2008, -2/+9In KDE4 everything is a desktop widget. The desktop itself is a plasmoid (or widget as you'd call it). The point is that you can have a totally modular UI becuase every part of it is a configurable widget.
- longcatacgnol, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6Go back to bed, Miguel.
- wheatley, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6Actually the panel fix was backported from the 4.1 branch, so that people could enjoy this feature earlier. 4.0.2 is another step towards 4.1
- phaedrusiszen, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6Release early and release often.
The idea is to release it at a "usable" state then work towards a production state from there, at a quick pace. Even pre-usable states are readily available. though. - UKsHaDoW, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6"I'm a 35 year old married software developer with two kids"
You should really start acting like it. - someguyouknow, on 03/06/2008, -8/+14Still plenty of problems with it though. I still am unable to shutdown without killing X. The panel looks funky with the Nvidia drivers(Vesa looks fine) although that could be because of my nvidia configuration. And the right click is broken.
But, I like the direction this is going. 4.1 will be a great one indeed. - tacojohn48, on 03/06/2008, -0/+5troll much?
- iRelinquish, on 03/06/2008, -2/+7No offense: I dont know why people are digging you up, most people have none of those errors.
- oobuntu, on 03/06/2008, -1/+6http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/
- HorseloverFat8, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You can already. Well, I can. I don't know about you. Konsole and the latest Amarok alpha both work.
- HorseloverFat8, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4I try it for a while, then find something really aggravating about it, and go back to Gnome. But with each update, my periods of aggravation are growing further apart.
- shakin, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5Not to mention that now Kate can properly save a file when using the fish ioslave. For my everyday work that's way more important than any plasma features. Plasma is overrated IMO. It's too heavy on widgets and not heavy enough on helping get tasks done.
I must say that while most of my Digg comments about KDE 4.0 were negative, I have been using it since its release and while I still miss some KDE 3.5 features (good fish ioslave file transfer performance most of all) I find KDE 4 is closer to my taste with less fiddling than 3.5. This is mostly because of the much-improved run dialog that replaced Katapult for me.
It's also hard to go back to the comparatively ugly 3.5 after using 4, - jjmckay, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5I'm excited about KDE4. Why is it that many open source projects seem like they're almost fantastic and that in a few releases it will be perfect? I guess its feature creep and that introduces bugs and problems because of planning issues due to unforeseen issues. I'm okay and familiar with that as I've been using software since the early 80s. I guess this issue hits some projects more than others and KDE is in a challenging transition now. Keep up the good work KDE folks.
I want to use KDE4 on bsd or linux but now seems to be too early. - Dongvid, on 03/06/2008, -4/+8Dugg and installed!
- mikelieman, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4fish:// is pretty ***** cool.
- inactive, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You're a pretty big douche bag... just thought you should know.
- BlueStarr, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4I'm gona try it out. Looks good.
- keyo, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4As much as I love the oxygen and plasma stuff I have to say this release is another ***** one. It took me 2 minutes to find a rendering bug and crash plasma. If 4.1 will be properly debugged and stable then I'll be over the moon about it.
- dualscreenman, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You seem to be ignorant of the development model.
In the 4.1 branch, extensive development and bug squashing goes on. Bug fixes and a feature or two are backported to the 4.0 branch. Then, roughly every month, a new release of the 4.0 branch is released as a 4.0.x release. The only thing you would achieve by getting rid of the 4.0.x releases would be that you'd have to live with bugs for longer. Nothing else would change. Seriously. - k3nt, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3I prefer the GNOME tools as well, but often prefer KDE apps. I don't believe Ubuntu is going to switch to KDE. It's too bad the devs do a lot more work on Ubuntu (GNOME). If they focused on KDE they'd have sharper system tools and more stability. I've always found Kubuntu to just be not as cohesive an experience as Ubuntu.
But anyway, I plan on going KDE when 4.1 is out as well. =D - inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+3Nah, if you look at my comment history, I frequently ramble for much longer than that.
- MWeather, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Sometimes I suspect they're wrong about ADD being over-diagnosed.
- MWeather, on 03/06/2008, -1/+4Fluxbox? Way too cluttered for my tastes. What's wrong with the command line?
- andycr512, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3To my knowledge they work fine in Gnome, just like KDE3 apps.
- rcarroll215, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Finally... we're able to resize that ridiculously huge panel! I may have to give this a shot right now.
- ut2k4king, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Just need to get my new hard drive in and I'm gonna reinstall Kubuntu, the updates are looking good.
- shawnanigans, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3Kubuntu 8.04 or will it somehow be in Ubuntu. I am not trying to be a dick but I prefer the Ubuntu system tools to Kubuntu and the GUI to be KDE 4 would be nice and want to know if it might actually be included with Ubuntu.
- phybere, on 03/06/2008, -5/+7I've been using Gnome for quite some time, and this is really tempting me...
To switch, or not to switch? - inactive, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3MUCH better!
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -1/+3I recently switched to the Kubuntu-KDE4 Hardy alpha (converted from Xubuntu Hardy), and I say if you want to switch, just dive right in (N.B. recent Hardys for some reason don't even detect my wireless card and die whenever I close my laptop lid, so I plan on going back to Gutsy soon). It's really a nice DE and IMO is ready to be used as a primary DE. It may not be feature-complete yet and still have some problems, but just looking at it as a DE and not comparing it to what you expect from 4.1, it's awesome. Except I hate the Kickoff menu as a general-purpose menu, so I took it off my panel and put on the "traditional" menu (it's the same kind of menu you get in Xfce). I really like plasma. It's so flexible. I love how you can configure all those widgets and stuff. You may not like using widgets like that, but it's actually really cool. On my panel, I added a battery life meter by the system tray and a logout/shutdown button all the way on the right (you know, like in GNOME/Xfce). On my desktop, I have a slightly larger than normal Kickoff menu on the top-left to use as a Favorites menu (e.g. instead of navigating through my main menu, I just click Kickoff and open Firefox 3 after I login (I have a GTK theme that copies KDE4's set, so don't worry, it looks integrated)). Then, I have a digital clock near it that's a little bigger, and recently removed a giant analog clock (it was really annoying, but still kinda cool). Finally, a little closer to the center I have a large-ish logout/shutdown widget (I love pressing the big red button whenever I want to shutdown!). One other small annoyance is that Ark, the archive manager, was really screwy for me and didn't even detect the contents of subfolders, so I removed it and installed file-roller. I actually have a good amount of GTK apps installed, so don't think that when you switch you have to leave everything behind that's familiar to you (as long as you set a good KDE4-looking GTK theme of course). All that said, I can't wait for 4.1 to be released!
- dualscreenman, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Note the paradox of trying to infect a Linux computer with spyware.
Or, I suppose more specifically, unleashing a spyware installer on a highly-Linux demographic. - RobotBuddha, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2I have, but it's never felt as simple or integrated as fish. I jump around servers enough that the additional step or two becomes a pain pretty quickly.
- armo, on 03/06/2008, -1/+3yep, they've always worked afaik
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd58/armo_2007/ ... - someguyouknow, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Well, I know quite few people have the right click problem. The video problem is probably my own settings.
And I have been hearing about the inability to shutdown/reboot without killing X for a long time.
Thats not to say that some or all of these are user error but it still has its fair share of annoying bugs. - MWeather, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2It's out. That's what released means.
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -4/+6EDIT: ***** YOU KDE!!! WHY CHANGE THE SHUTDOWN BUTTON TO BLUE IN 4.0.2??? NOW I CAN'T CLICK THE GIANT RED BUTTON ANYMORE!!!!!11 WHAT POSSIBLE PURPOSE CAN I SERVE NOW?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111
- MattBD, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2KDE 4.1 is due end of July, so at that point it should be a lot more usable.
- hellonull, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2By "video trailer" he means "spyware installer."
- xanjamanuo, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1I would *love* to be able to do that too.... I've been out of the linux circle for sooooo long now tho... =/
