- superyounan1, on 01/05/2008, -3/+15and remember, its NOT KDE4
- CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -1/+13I usually favour Gnome, but i'll be honest, this is looking pretty impressive. Congrats to the developers and contributors!
- martalli, on 01/05/2008, -1/+13I'm looking forward to this hitting the kubuntu repositories.
- CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11Contrary to what your username suggests, you sir are NOT a winner.
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -1/+12I like it except i hate the K icon, its still the same old one, can we not revamp the K icon
- niallabrown, on 01/05/2008, -0/+11With one digg I would call your comment overrrated.
- mrsteveman1, on 01/05/2008, -0/+10Because they are trying to cross the Windows taskbar with the OS X dock and this is what you get.
Lots of things KDE does are hybrids like that. In this case it needs some refinement. - skyshock1, on 01/05/2008, -2/+11Why does the dock have to be so HUGE by default?
- Roger, on 01/06/2008, -0/+8I meant it was a general GNOME issue (e.g. the huge widgets and font sizes).
- has2k1, on 01/05/2008, -0/+8I love the idea of doing away with the gray panels and menus.
- ravkass, on 01/05/2008, -0/+7Please relax.
- richbradshaw, on 01/05/2008, -1/+8It's KDE 4.0, KDE 4 describes the whole series of releases, much as KDE 3 refers to every release of KDE, from KDE 3.0 upto the current version.
- niallabrown, on 01/05/2008, -3/+10I like the look of KDE 4
- skyshock1, on 01/06/2008, -1/+7How you figure? The default Gnome dock is about 1/4 that size.
- gordmoo, on 01/05/2008, -2/+8i run the development version of kde4 here, keep it updated and i can say right now its not release ready. plasma crashes consantly, many applications barely load before dieing... if anything deserves a push back to make the offical release a non alpha release its KDE, they have earnt it over the years.
- schestowitz, on 01/05/2008, -6/+12Just don't actually tag "will eat your children", k? :-)
- Hermmunster, on 01/06/2008, -1/+7It's borderline alpha/beta. It is not ready for release in any fashion. I someone understand their reasons for release, but it is absolutely NOT ready.
- jiller, on 01/05/2008, -4/+10I have many leather bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany
- inactive, on 01/05/2008, -2/+7As opposed to Gnome that is about as close to MacOS (except with an extra bar for running programs rather than finder) as KDE is to Windows?
The similarities are basically the location of the menu bar, which can be changed. - annoia, on 01/05/2008, -1/+6Because, as stated earlier in this thread, KDE 4 (not 4.0) refers to the entire KDE 4.x series, so KDE 4.0 will not in any way contain everything that is referred to when people are talking about KDE 4. Get it? When people talk about KDE 4 they most likely mean KDE 4.9998, not KDE 4.0.

- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/06/2008, -1/+5One could argue that by adopting .NET and sending a representative to a MS Office XML promotion group, GNOME makes itself an ally of Microsoft.
I'm not saying that I believe in that. - mrsteveman1, on 01/05/2008, -1/+5Thats good, you just keep on selecting your OS because it's not Windows.
- SpamBuntu, on 01/05/2008, -0/+4Some of basic kde4 apps are very useful and have a much nicer look than their kde3 counterparts. For example kwrite and kate: beautiful syntax highlighting and code block folding! I am using these and few other kde4 apps from my kde3 desktop (because it is a mature and more usable desktop).
By the way, do anyone know, how I can replace those kde3 apps with kde4 apps? Kwrite, for example, seems to be called internally. It doesn't help sym-linking /opt/kde3/bin/kwrite to /usr/bin/kwrite. Opening files from konqueror causes kde3's kwrite to start anyway. - noseeme, on 01/05/2008, -2/+6And replacing them with solid jet black bars? Ick.
- KAMiKAZOW, on 01/06/2008, -0/+4Why don't you just edit the file type associations? "Open with..." and then check "Always open with".
- CloseTheCode, on 01/06/2008, -0/+3Thanks for the elaboration :)
- antitab, on 01/06/2008, -2/+4"KDE 4.0 is an official release intended for public consumption, but it is not technically production-ready in many respects and some features—like the Plasma user interface layer—are still under heavy development."
So... the user interface layer of a desktop environment is not ready for production in a release intended for public consumption. And the developers are wondering why we're left going ??? - bsander, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2... so it actually IS KDE4, it's just not all of it.
- keyo, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2I just tried the 0.9 live cd, visually it looks very good, it was nice to use. However things would crash, window decorations would break. 4.1 will be the real release, with the Raptor menu, more plasmoids, stability and maybe even a finished version of KOffice if we're lucky.
- kelvie, on 01/06/2008, -0/+2Actually (not trolling here), the icon is slightly different; it's now scalable, and has a slightly different border. This one's part of the Oxygen icon set.
- CloseTheCode, on 01/05/2008, -2/+4Care to elaborate?
- MrTea, on 01/06/2008, -1/+3Different strokes for different folks. Some of us like dark colors.
- z0mbie2099, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1I can't ***** wait. Jan 11th!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Darkhacker, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1That's very poor reporting on Ars Technica's part. The release is intended for developers to start building on the KDE 4 platform, testers, and early adopters. That's what they meant by public consumption, not mom and pop. The KDE people have made very clear that this is an "will eat your children" release and that KDE 3.5 is the production quality release. In fact, I find it extremely odd and almost stupidly funny that the author would say "intended for public consumption" and then quote Aaron Seigo with a link to a source that says the exact opposite.
- BastionPl, on 01/07/2008, -0/+1Here is more screenshots : http://www.jarzebski.pl/read/kde-4-rev-758000.so
- martalli, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1gnome takes its cues mainly from mac os9
- superyounan1, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1you are welcome for the elaboration
- inactive, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1 I hear Chris is going to release a cutting edge Klikit when this is ready=y to roll.
- troyunrau, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1You have something broken on your system. I have a stable plasma and stable KDE applications. I'm running 4.0.0 from the SVN tag on top of Mandriva 2008.
If you're talking about feature parity with 3.5.x, then we can have a real discussion. - lovekudu, on 01/06/2008, -0/+1I actually read the first half of your comment, agreed, modded you up, then read the '***** windump'. Grow up, writing ***** like that gives the rest of us a bad name.
- Almightymole, on 01/05/2008, -3/+2Hey, i cant afford a new pair of glasses.
- richbradshaw, on 01/05/2008, -3/+2Too much looking at computer screens makes your eyes square!
- Roger, on 01/05/2008, -6/+4That's a GNOME issue too. Seems like Linux people tend to have poor eyesight or something.
- GRAVEWiSH, on 01/06/2008, -5/+2I WANT TO BE ON YOU!
- skyshock1, on 01/05/2008, -8/+2Remember this isn't KDE4. This is an early release. Might as well be a beta.
/facepalm - haterofps3, on 01/05/2008, -10/+4Wow thats ignorant
not using something because it resembles something else, regardless of its features or the fact that it is nothing like the product you dislike.
you are what is wrong with linux IMHO - skyshock1, on 01/05/2008, -8/+1Preferrably one that doesn't look like Vista.
- noseeme, on 01/05/2008, -16/+6My first order of business: Slap another skin on this ugly sack of dog crap.
