- SteveMax, on 10/17/2007, -0/+15Fixing the remaining bugs? KDE 3.5 will remain in use for a long time, any bug that remains needs to be fixed.
The "perfect" DE, well, that's what KDE 4.x aims to be ;) - springo, on 10/17/2007, -0/+13Many great men (those who digg this comment) once said: "I don't hate Microsoft users, and I don't know much about the size of their dicks, but I know for sure that Sun Tzu and those who quote him are douche bags",
- schnabeltasse, on 10/17/2007, -1/+12My biggest issue with Apple is everything has to start with an i! I mean we get it, its Apple, but they have to brand everything they use. iPhone, iMac, iPod, iLife,...
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9Wait till KDE 4.
- brianez21, on 10/17/2007, -0/+9Yeah, and Gnome does the same thing with the letter 'g'. Galeon, Gimp, GStreamer, Gedit, Gconf ,Gnumeric, Gnucash..... Doesn't mean I hate Gnome for branding their (gasp) GTK applications!
- schestowitz, on 10/17/2007, -5/+133.5.6 is already too good. What are they trying to achieve? Making the *perfect* desktop environment?
"If you optimise everything, you'll never be happy" -- Don Knuth. - GMorgan, on 10/19/2007, -0/+7No actually it's the third party developers doing that. KDE did it naturally but then a million others copied it. Thankfully we are moving away from such madness.
- tripzero, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6Dude, I may not use KDE (and a lot of really people do), but those who do will be interested in this story. If you aren't interested, then don't read it, and certainly don't post "GNOME" in it. Make sense?
- wolf08, on 10/17/2007, -0/+6Shoot, missed my edit window. Looks a little bit like this:
.............................3.5___3.5.1___3.5.8
Trunk_____3.0____/___________________________4.0
Hope this text diagram works out alright....
Guess not. And yet again I am foiled by DIGG's comment system.
Ok, now it looks good, but ignore the .....s, they're just spacers. - jrepin, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4For Mac OS X users the packages are now available in Fink Unstable:
http://www.racoonfink.com/archives/000736.html - RobotBuddha, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4I find it a bit annoying as well, but at least it gives everything a name which will come up in google. I'm still annoyed at adobe for going with "air" as a name. Pain in the ass to get meaningful search results.
- inactive, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4O.k. Sorry. It won't happen again.
- SteveMax, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Quite the opposite. Gnome is the one that strives to be user-friendly, to the point of removing functionality if the usability group decides that said functionality makes the UI confusing. KDE strives to be tweakable to no end, which will always include exposing a lot of options to the user.
- wolf08, on 10/17/2007, -0/+4Not really....
They have a KDE 3.0 trunk, and a 4.0 trunk. (and 2.0, 1.0, but development has stopped for those). KDE 3.5 was the 6th major release on the 3.0 trunk, and 3.5.8 is the 8th bugfix. The 4.0 trunk is a totally separate codebase, and while some of the stuff that is included in 3.5.8 might go into 4.0, it's not part of the same codebase anymore. - etx313, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3Crap, you're right!!! Quickly! Stop KDE 4 development! You've already hit the mark! Go buy a sluprie or something.
- superstoned, on 10/17/2007, -0/+3LOL, you say KDE treats users as Dumb *****? Hey, who's the master of the Dumbed Down interface? If you treat users as idiots, what do you think you'll get (Linus)...
Anyway, if filesharing on Gnome works, in KDE it rocks a million times better. GVFS sucks donkey nuts compared to KIOslaves (not the least because most Gnome apps don't support it). But then again, under the hood, KDE is a million times better anyways.
The only thing G has going for it is a wonderfully dumbed down interface, which helps you get to work quickly and slows you down if you REALLY want to do some work. But hey, once you get used to it, it's like windows. Most ppl don't notice they spend half the time behind their computer fighting windows' inefficiency instead of doing work.
Sorry for behing harsh, but hey, I just wanted to return the favor. - SteveMax, on 10/19/2007, -0/+3Is that a bad attempt at a joke, or have you been living under a rock for the last year?
- brianez21, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I'm sad to know why you think kde sucks in its present state. I use it on my Kubuntu box, and while it does have its flaws, i find it to be very good. And yes, the KDE4 oxygen redesign is really shaping up.
- brianez21, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I'm sad to ask why you think kde sucks in its present state. I use it on my Kubuntu box, and while it does have its flaws, i find it to be very good. And yes, the KDE4 oxygen redesign is really shaping up. Do you like Gnome or some other DE better for any particular reason?
- daftman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Ron Paul thinks for you?
- MattBD, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I don't know about everyone else, but I'm fed up of the whole GNOME vs KDE thing. I use KDE, because I like it, and it's a strong desktop, with excellent applications (I particularly love Konqueror, Katapult and Amarok) and very customisable, but I'd never criticize someone for choosing GNOME.
Linux users are actually very lucky in that we have a choice as to what desktop we use, and both GNOME and KDE are excellent desktops, but inevitably people will have their preferences. Most Linux users have tried both, and have chosen one that works for them. - martalli, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2If you used KDE, you might be interested. I use it and dugg it up, since it is of interest to me.
Another great reason to digg it is that *for once* it references the actual source instead of some paragraph and a half of blogspam. - daftman, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2I think someone here suffer from a penile disorder.
- oobuntu, on 10/17/2007, -1/+3The childish trolling on this thread by Gnome fans just reinforces the fact that KDE is a mature desktop environment for mature users
- superstoned, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2Well, let me do it, then, all others are just being annoying: nice work on KDE 3.5.8! I'm gonna enjoy it as soon as it gets into the KDEmod repository on Arch. KDE is getting rather polished with 3.5.8, and there are still plans for improvements in 3.5.9. Looks like the 3.x series was pretty good and can hold it's ground. Of course, with 4.0 coming, and 4.1 hopefully within 6 months after that, it is getting old - yet it still kicks the ass of it's competitors in most areas...
I'm pretty glad to be able to use KDE at home, and not being forced to work with XP or some other inferior piece of software ;-) - superstoned, on 10/17/2007, -0/+2 The great Gnome foot is soo much better than Konqi, isn't it? Dragons eat Gnomes for breakfast ;-)
- martalli, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1I don't think that anyone really minds allowing a choice, but the low-tax states might just end up having to suffer with jwm or the cli.
- superstoned, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1You too.
- superstoned, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Try another theme... When KDE had Keramik as default look, it was too weird and unprofessional. Now it uses plastik, and now it's too boring and professional. What do users want?!?!?
Either way, KDE 4's gonna get a new theme, Oxygen, and only really dumb ***** could say it looks like windows or mac, so we hopefully we'll get rid of those annoying comments.
Though, of course, KDE has windows and icons and buttons, so you can say it looks like windows anyway. Of course, microsoft invented all that (not). - martalli, on 10/17/2007, -0/+1Gosh, this is a setup for a "your Momma" joke...
- etx313, on 10/16/2007, -0/+1File this comment under: Butthurt.
- SteveMax, on 10/17/2007, -1/+2Really? I had no idea that Media Access Controls had UIs.
- martalli, on 10/17/2007, -1/+1The prerelease versions of 4.0 are being labelled 3.9xxx
- zovres, on 10/17/2007, -2/+1file sharing on gnome owns, my GF uses it. I have to say I don't know how it's set up in KDE but I doubt it gets easier than that. so yeah gnome does have that and the printer setup too.
And a stupid dragon doesn't makes things friendlier it makes them dumber. True ease of use is achieved through design and flow, not a dragon that looks like a retard. Do users really wanna be treated as dumb ***** that need Barney the dinosaur to tell them what to do? I don't think so.
Look at MAC's UIs there's no stupid sidekicks there. - Zettablade, on 10/19/2007, -3/+2You miss the point...
- xelerated, on 10/16/2007, -2/+0Yea, I agree, BUT its strong point is being "the most" user friendly for those moving away from windows.
Its got easier to use util's, such as file sharing and printer setup that gnome etc.. doesnt have. - donuts, on 10/17/2007, -3/+1I do love Linux as servers. But it's still not my choice of desktop computer. KDE is too ugly for me to actually stare at it for hours daily. It reminds me of Windows.
- inactive, on 10/19/2007, -4/+1GTK = Gimp Tool Kit. Not Gnome.
- zovres, on 10/16/2007, -4/+2really? are they supposed to have a massive redesign?
- xelerated, on 10/17/2007, -3/+0Its you.... this release is a minor milestone to V4. thats what the numbers are for. 4.0 means its a ready for production release. So this is 4, just not fully ready, still working out the bugs. No bugs = final (v4) release.
- ScottyMcBaggs, on 10/17/2007, -5/+1Here, let me pick up that name you dropped.
- cyberflas, on 10/17/2007, -7/+1HERE HERE
- samdu, on 10/17/2007, -10/+3I love KDE and all, but do we really need three stories on the front page of Digg for every release? "KDE x.x.x coming soon!" "KDE x.x.x being released xx/xx!" "KDE x.x.x available!"
- zovres, on 10/17/2007, -8/+1dude the first image I get when google imaging kde 4 is this one http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/349158640_7ee36 ...
all I see is that stupid dragon that I wanna kill everytime I log out. kinda like word's paperclip. - clau85, on 10/17/2007, -8/+1Most Digg users are anyway retarded (sorry for the harsh word)... Stop commenting 'cause nobody gives freakin' you know what about your opinion, that is based on absolutely nothing than your small minded vision of the world. Just shut the hell up, and if you really feel the need to post something, think twice before you say the stupid thing anyway. There, I said it ;)
- mrisi, on 10/17/2007, -10/+1Dummm.. is it me or are they supposed to be working on KDE 4 rather than another release of 3.
Must be me. - cyberflas, on 10/17/2007, -15/+4my biggest issue with kde is that you're a loser
