- kilian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2From announcement made on kde-i18n-nl, that's the final version. It will just be renamed from kde/unstable/3.5-rc2 to kde/stable/3.5.0. No new upload needed, just a 'mv'. :)
From Stephan Kulow:
----------------------------------------------------------------
I spent the weekend reviewing commits to the 3.5 branch
and tagged most of them as included in KDE 3.5.0. So now
I prepared a RC2 and plan to announce that as final as soon
as I have enough binaries.
So this means, I will only halt that for really grave problems
(put me on CC on bugzilla entries - don't send me private lists
of show stoppers). So far all feedback I got was that KDE 3.5
is rock solid.
---------------------------------------------------------------- - andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hum... A "silent release"... So you're saying that they don't actualy want anyone to use it becuase no one will know about it?
A RC is just a Release Candidate. If it *becomes* final or not has not been said, and until that happens it is a "loud and open release" of a RC; not a "silent release" of a Final. - muramasa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A release candidate is just that, a candidate for final release. Seems like the consensus is that there are no serious bugs in RC2 so it's becoming the final release.
- the79jinx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'll just wait for a slackware package..
Shouldn't take more then a month. - psperneac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know where some release notes are to be found? At least a partial list... grepping for features in cvs logs is not fun.
- longofest, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0not-so silently released anymore
- Junx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Slashdot only _seems_ to have more techie and scientific users. Browse at -1 to see what idiocy you've been missing.
- kilian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, final has not been announced yet, but it can be downloaded from 'stable' directory
ftp://ftp.kde.org/pub/kde/stable/3.5/src - Gaby, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Original post was not clear!
- burstlag, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Uh, no.
Unless KDE has suddenly departed with de facto standard versioning and release procedures, it has not been "silently released."
An -rcN tacked onto the version number is a release candidate with emphasis on the "candidate." If they're releasing it as an RC, then it still has some testing to undergo, even after compliation. It won't be "final" until it's been put through the paces after a period of time and declared stable enough for production use. Not a moment before.
Ask yourself, would it really make sense for them to upload an RC to the mirrors only to turn around and upload the final right afterward? Wouldn't it make sense to simply upload the final in the first place?
You jumped the shark, dude. - Zlobadon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"Cause it's digg and not /.
