- armo, on 01/12/2008, -1/+29It's in gutsy backports already, I'm impressed
- ha1f, on 01/12/2008, -4/+32Taskbar is non-customizable? Really guys? This release is rushed. Looks like the hype backfired. I have no doubt it will be remedied, but there really was no reason to rush this release out.
- Narwaffle, on 01/12/2008, -3/+31The real question is "is Windows good enough to run KDE"?
- Klowner, on 01/12/2008, -0/+21Yeah, it's still pretty rough, but it's certainly a good start. I'm still looking forward to KDE4
- WhereAmI, on 01/12/2008, -0/+18Buried and Reported. I hope you are banned.
For those who are wondering, this starts to clear your hard drive. - evilregis, on 01/12/2008, -5/+22I tried it today and I'm completely underwhelmed. The panel is huge. It's less customizable. The menu is awkward. The widget control in the upper corner is ugly. I don't know. I just felt like it was ready to be released.
Overall it was less than 'meh' for me. I liked the 3.x KDE better than this. I hope the 4.1 (which should've been 4.0) brings significant improvements because it has potential, it's just not there right now. At least not for me. - inactive, on 01/12/2008, -4/+21Good god, the laughs just do not stop.
- hyperfocal, on 01/12/2008, -1/+15The KDE team was warning people that the 4.0 release was going to be rough around the edges. The 3.5 branch is still the one for most users.
Aaron Seigo said that it wouldn't be until 4.1 or even 4.2 that the new branch would be appropriate for average users.
Give them a couple months with the 4.0 branch and there will be a good 4.2 release for the general public. - erkokite, on 01/12/2008, -3/+16I'm running it Kubuntu gutsy and although it looks pretty, it still seems a bit half-baked.
- inactive, on 01/12/2008, -18/+30Just tried it. It sucks.
- nhnFreespirit, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10Simple really.... Distros will not ship with KDE4 as the default until they judge that it has matured enough. So new users will likely not see it for a while still. If you manually go out and install KDE 4.0.0 it should be expected that you know what you are doing and are willing to live with the shortcomings of a very new, completely rewritten .0.0 release.
KDE 4.0 != KDE4 simply because KDE 4.0.0 is the very first release, and KDE4 will continue to improve and grow with each following release. - arbulus, on 01/12/2008, -2/+12stunning review, there. care to elaborate?
- kleverness, on 01/12/2008, -0/+10Amarok has a different release schedule, it isn't part of the KDE base project. As of today, Amarok 2 isn't even alpha.
- colto, on 01/12/2008, -1/+11you don't need the *. The r stands for recursive and will delete child directories. That being said, you are a douche.
- Klowner, on 01/12/2008, -0/+9no Windows version *yet*. I think they hope to have the apps ported by KDE4 (4.1), don't quote me on that
- Giga, on 01/12/2008, -4/+13Schestowitz, do you intentionally try to sound like a fanatical idiot?
- kolanos, on 01/12/2008, -8/+17Played around with it for several hours today, sadly the KDE team has a long ways to go before 4.0 is a viable alternative to Gnome, IMO. I was really looking forward to this release, too.
- arbulus, on 01/12/2008, -1/+9you really are a piece of *****.
- MethodOne, on 01/12/2008, -2/+10He's referring to Novell's controversial patent deal with Microsoft.
- apokryphos, on 01/12/2008, -1/+9It will run on 64bit too, yes.
- joelhardi, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8I think that OP's comments -- "The panel is huge. It's less customizable. The menu is awkward. The widget control in the upper corner is ugly." -- *are* constructive. That's why the KDE folks released this thing rough around the edges, because they wanted to get broader feedback. I mean, you could tell even just from screenshots that it was going to be a little gimpy, but who cares, they shipped it! The next version will be better.
- kreneskyp, on 01/12/2008, -0/+8This is a release for the main apis. all the kde apps will follow later.
- phinn, on 01/12/2008, -2/+10Thats gotta be the fastest backport in history. Awesome!
- valent, on 01/12/2008, -2/+10I'm downloading it to give it a spin under VirtualBox on my Fedora 8 ;)
- gabn, on 01/12/2008, -1/+9http://kubuntu.org/announcements/kde-4.0.php
yes you can get kubuntu live cd of kde 4 - digerati1338, on 01/12/2008, -2/+9There are several. Kubuntu and debian both have one.
- TomKarpik, on 01/12/2008, -2/+9Something should never be excused from criticisms just because it's free.
- skywake, on 01/12/2008, -2/+9yeah, I installed and ran it this morning and it does indeed suck compared to KDE3 ATM. I can see some good things but for now I think I will stay with 3 until they clean it up a bit.
- cquilliam, on 01/12/2008, -1/+8I tend to agree with ha1f, it does feel rushed, but, no one is forcing it down our throats. I installed it alongside my kde 3.5 install on kubuntu, tried it for a while, poked around, and then went back to 3.5. I'm not saying its bad but its just not polished yet. However, if i remember correctly, 3.0 wasn't great out of the gates either, and now its awesome. Just the same as XP out of the gate was horrible, but matured into a fairly stable and reliable system (still no windows 2000 though :) )
- arcadefun, on 01/12/2008, -3/+10Brief note to everyone saying this release was rushed, or should be tagged Alpha, etc. The following was written by the Plasma (fancy new thing in KDE4) lead dev. It addresses the issues and explains it in a clear and honest fashion. Please give it a read before lashing KDE 4.0.0 http://aseigo.blogspot.com/2008/01/talking-bluntly ...
- dumbkiwi, on 01/12/2008, -0/+74.0 is the first release in the kde 4 series of releases. Someone above posted a link to an article by aaron seigo explaining this.
- digerati1338, on 01/12/2008, -2/+8There are many other live CD's out there. Most major distro's have them. Look around the bottom of this page.
http://www.kde.org/announcements/4.0/
Debian has a live CD, Kubuntu has a live CD, and I think openSuse does as well.
There are instructions for installing on all major distros on that page too. I'm running it on kubuntu 7.10 right now, alongside KDE 3.5.8. - richbradshaw, on 01/12/2008, -1/+7KDE 4 isn't about looks primarily, it's about the under the hood functionality.
Looks always come last in linux, after things work properly. It's kind of the opposite of the Windows model of development. - diggerpleez, on 01/12/2008, -4/+10I installed it from the Gutsy repos this morning, and I was never able to get the System Settings to open.... back to Gnome.
- TomKarpik, on 01/12/2008, -3/+9I would just like to know how these weak explanations/justifications of "KDE 4.0 is not KDE 4" are going to look to the newbie users who install this as part of some distro in the future/from their package managers.
They'll take one look at it and be like "This is ugly as sin", and then have a bad taste about KDE 4 for a long time. That will definitely have repercussions of some sort.
PS: Can anyone explain to me how 4.0 != 4? - rlbond86, on 01/12/2008, -3/+8KDE 4.0.0 has been released onto the world. "The KDE Community is thrilled to announce the immediate availability of KDE 4.0. This significant release marks both the end of the long and intensive development cycle leading up to KDE 4.0 and the beginning of the KDE 4 era."
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KDE 4.0 is the first release of "KDE 4", but take note that the developers have clearly stated that KDE 4.0 is not KDE 4, but more of a base release with all the underlying systems ready to go, but with still a lot of work to be done on the user-visible side.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Download it from the KDE 4.0 info page. Update: Screenshots.
dumbasses - nubnub, on 01/12/2008, -2/+764 bit?
- Hawkeye05, on 01/12/2008, -1/+6I always load them in a background tab and wait for the name to appear.
- arbulus, on 01/12/2008, -0/+4what if you just uninstalled KDE 3 and installed KDE 4 by itself?
- mufffin, on 01/12/2008, -1/+5Good job, props to the KDE team! Absolutely love it!
- secleinteer, on 01/12/2008, -1/+5I installed it in Gutsy (from the Launchpad PPA, not from the backports, but it's the same thing) and library conflicts between KDE 3 and 4 caused a number of issues, the biggest of which was xine not working (no Kaffeine or MPlayer video output). I'd suggest holding off on this for a while until the bugs are sorted out.
- reddcell, on 01/12/2008, -2/+5Don't be too impressed. Many library conflicts and poor performance. I purged it soon after installing...
- wellyuk, on 01/12/2008, -3/+6Yes it does. Can't say I'm overly impressed though.
- niallabrown, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3It really will "eat your children" but It's a great start. I see a lot of potential.
- cquilliam, on 01/12/2008, -1/+4I've done my part.
- damentz, on 01/12/2008, -1/+4yes, they bake the K in the app name, such as oKular
- wellyuk, on 01/12/2008, -2/+5Ballmer Linux? What's he talking about? I'm not up on the Linux distro in-fighting.
- Sabretou, on 01/12/2008, -1/+4Anyone know which repositories have it for PCLinuxOS?
- rlbond86, on 01/12/2008, -0/+3Significant digits.
- happycat, on 01/12/2008, -2/+4Don't worry, KDE 3.5 is more than a match for poor Gnome. ;)
Kde4.0 has a long way to go until it's even a viable alternative to kde 3.5, but it looks very good so far. I see what they are trying to do here, but it is a bit misleading to put something out for release when it's in such an alpha state. -
