- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41I came to know about this yesterday when I found that one of my father's friend who happens to be magistrate was being trained to use Linux, OpenOffice, Firefox, Gnome and Evolution.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+19Now they can schedule the hangings with opensource software.
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Saw this one 2 months ago and put it in Groklaw News Picks... what's nice to see here is that 'non-techies' are able to cope what that thing that "is not ready for the desktop" (so they tell us). Findland's justice department moved to OOo as well. It's worth adding that law firms are notorious for being (probably) the most Linux-hostile sector.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17Yet when I call microsoft support, someone in india answers the phone.
- maymats, on 10/10/2007, -1/+12has it occured to you that it would save millions of rupees that could be used to solve the 'bigger problems'?
- AdHaR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9And your problem is?...The Nazis are long gone.
Read up...wiki is your friend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika#Religion_and ... - jazh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10India could beneift from this. Being that this software is free, and windows costs $$$.
I'm not a linux fan, I use Vista, but for India, they really DO need cost effective software. - LuTze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Well, next you call you may get the stupid "Install Linux" solution for your problem :-)
- godmode, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8Too bad we still hang people to death.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4When considering countries of size and population of India, its a good choice to use open source software, rather than forking $600 for ultimate POS, you can use that money for feeding many school children.
Support costs should be low because of trained personnel, well when it comes to judges they are not going use anything but Office & Mail client.
Downright morons who don't understand situation in countries like India can mod me down. - blaser, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Statement irrelevant to this article.
- noname202, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The blink tag was invented by Netscape and is not implemented in Internet explorer.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4166 million people live in Uttar Pradesh. This will speed up judiciary at a lower cost.
- randomc0de, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3You do realize you're asking him for evidence Finland's Justice Dept. is using Linux by giving as evidence.... a link. A link to a site some anonymous guy put up to track Linux adoption. You don't believe random guy A, but random guy B is suddenly a good source of information?
- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Here is the story that I had in mind (been a few developments since then):

- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I feel bad that I laughed at your comment.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2India won't care about shilpa *****.
- LuTze, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3In theory, in a nascent market (e.g. India) where the majority has not been extensively exposed to computers, the training costs are similar so using Linux (and other free software) has two advantages. 1. It saves money and therefore leaves more for other programs (assuming the fraction pocketed by corruption stays the same). 2. It is easier to produce localized versions, especially true for India where there are over 20 languages (approx. one for each state. As computers penetrate more and more of the country, people tend to get more exposure to one OS (typically Windows) and then the argument for introducing Linux always gets bogged down with the added cost of training people who are already used to Windows.
- DevlinD, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3Does anyone else find it ironic that they are switching to all these open source technologies...yet they have the blink tag which I believe was a MS invention? I should start a Facebook group based on the universal hate for this tag.
Overall though, reading the article gave me goosebumps. To see India switching to open source is a beautiful thing, I love that country. - Coldkill, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3If you don't like it, don't read it
- AdHaR, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The *reply* button is there for a reason...
- qwuinc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Link please... Finland is still uncovered here: http://www.listphile.com/Linux
- arjie, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Welcome to an Indian Government website. They'll all have either blinking text, marquees or tons of animated gifs. It's because that's what we're taught in school about HTML. Honest. It's pretty funny really.
- LuTze, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Service costs in India tend to be much lower than the cost of hardware and software.
There is no guarantee about where the money will go but that is no reason to give it to MS. I am sure a bunch of money will fund corruption but at least some will go to good use.
In govt, there is always forcing. Imagine you have some govt. They need to buy and manage a bunch of computers. Your best bet for minimizing the cost of purchase and support is to buy a bunch of similarly configured computers from one or a few vendors. Now they can decide on any OS but it will be forced on everyone in that wing of the govt because otherwise their support costs will skyrocket. - patch6, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Man pages support them.
- kingsleyj, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1If we want to speed up the judiciary in India, we should do something about our rat's nest of laws. It takes what, 5 years to get a verdict on civil litigation? Unacceptable. All the OSS in the world won't make a system built on piles of crappy, irrelevant laws work any faster.
- hockey, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Go ahead and submit it. The kicker though will be if anyone else diggs it.
- ghoch, on 02/22/2008, -0/+0It's good idea - switch to open source!

- ramnath, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Smart moves I should say though I dont happen to be associated with ny judicial wing. Will this incorporate pace and more accuracy too into the system?
- notjamt9000, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Oh dear, a blink tag ( http://www.allahabadhighcourt.in/intro.htm history link to the right)
- wvdavis, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1But it is "most populated state of India".
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1for the most part everything is pirated. Even Government PC have pirated OS and office suite on them.
- known, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1You can vote here to save 300 million people living inhumanely in India.
http://www.polldaddy.com/poll.asp?p=100816 - fatas, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Uttar Pradesh is also one of the most backward states in India.
- fani, on 10/10/2007, -10/+9I hate it when Govt.'s force the use of an OS. Whats the difference ? Previously, they forced Windows, now, they're forcing Linux.
Its not like a judge is gonna care what he uses. ( and he's not gonna sit at night compiling new linux kernels )
Personally, I'd like them to use any OS of choice and it all works seamlessly together. ( whatever apps they use and all ).
There are bigger problems in India than worrying about whether Linux or Windows is being used. - rheaume, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1I guess that would explain this:
http://film.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,2178553,0 ...
"an initial ban on the actor leaving India was later overturned in a ruling by the Indian supreme court. Immigration officials in Mumbai were reported to have been unaware of this ruling when they made the arrest." - bharbhar, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1justice in india aint exactly justice.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2/offtopic - If uttar pradesh is taken as a country its population will be 7th highest in the world. and its a tiny tiny state
- fani, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2But what about support costs ? Its not like they'll not need any support. Who supports them ? Whats the cost with that ?
Is the money saved being put back to good use ?
My real crib is with forcing the use of an OS. - JasonCox, on 10/10/2007, -9/+6You know, if you guys are going to submit a story every time a business, government or independent organization decides to use Linux I'm going to have to do the same thing every time one switches to Windows. This stuff happens every single day, I dont care what OS you use so why is it news?
- objectcode, on 10/10/2007, -6/+2they have to use windows because Micro$oft outsouced their support to India
- openj, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1Your eternal souls are saved or damned on Linux machines too. http://www.openjesus.org/2007/for-loop
- dhbanes, on 10/10/2007, -9/+4...and the caste system!
