- baalzebub, on 11/22/2007, -0/+7i could care less for the author's rant, Linux is just the kernel, it is built with the GNU toolset, and other packages that make a complete distro each have their own names, true though when people refer to any Linux distro they just call it Linux-*something* or *something*-Linux, RMS insists on calling it GNU/Linux and thats his right to call it what he wants, as long as you know what is under the hood and appreciate the hard work that went in to building it is what really counts anyway...
- Philluminati, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3People that use the why not call it Firefox/OpenOffice/GNU/Linux are ***** retarded.
GNU isn't a set of user space programs okay. When we say toolkit we mean the things that are actually required such as BASH (the command line interface), GCC (The Compiler you may of actually compiled your operating system with). The contents of /bin. They are not "just" userspace programs. The argument they can be replaced is stupid, so can the Kernel....just because something can be replaced doesn't mean it's role isn't important. The kernel can be replaced much easier. Look GNU + LINUX KERNEL are the two major components of GNU/Linux systems. Give the dude the credit he deserves. - chris9902, on 11/23/2007, -0/+3Why not just call it "super happy fun fun" and get it over with.
- CHiLL, on 11/23/2007, -0/+2"I along with 99% of the human race, call it 'Linux'"
That's a lot of people who know about Linux. - ToadLeg, on 11/23/2007, -1/+2Why then don't you appreciate the work of Firefox and OpenOffice when you refer to Firefox/OpenOffice/Linux? What about the hundreds of other programs in Linux? Because you're not anti-appreciating them by not listing every program name every time you refer to the kernel. But for some reason, unlike everyone else, GNU wants to spray paint "GNU wuz here" on the Linux name. Just refer to the kernel name, "Linux", "Solaris", or "Hurd", when denoting the operating system, because it's the base that the rest of it is built on.
- cstrippie, on 11/23/2007, -2/+3I do find it amusing that the very folks who demand software freedom have the gall to demand that you refer to your "free" software by *their* terms. If I want to call it Linux, I damned well will...along with Ubuntu, buttOS, or any other name that makes my little heart sing.
- ToadLeg, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1How about giving them the credit they deserve in the credits, not in the dictionary?
- t0ny, on 11/23/2007, -3/+4It seems that everybody on digg calls it ubuntu...
- cstrippie, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1And where did I make a SINGLE suggestion that this would be ok? It's called R E A D I N G - you should try it.
- Philluminati, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1"Because it's got X in it, why not call it GNU/X/Linux?"
good point mate..... X is from GNU so we could actually call it GNU/GNU/Linux then or just "GNU/Linux" for short. I don't really care but these guys deserve more recognition. - zeth0, on 11/23/2007, -0/+0> X is from GNU
No it is not, X was developed in the 1980s by DEC, Xerox, some universities and others. The modern implementation is from X.org. GNU has nothing to do with it. - KevinJim, on 11/23/2007, -1/+199% of the human race don't only they are unaware what Linux is but what a computer is. If you said 1% of the human race it would be A LOT people
- baalzebub, on 11/23/2007, -2/+1free to use & redistribute, but if you modify the source code you must include the modified source code too if you redistribute it, GPLed software is NOT free to steal and close the code...
- schestowitz, on 11/23/2007, -7/+1Just call it a Free operating system. Our friends in the BSD side should receive some recognition as well because some drivers and work is shared. These are the two main families of Free operating systems, but the egenral audience will naturally assume that "Free" means "cheap (and therefore really, really bad)", not "libre".
