- 3242130193, on 02/06/2009, -7/+161Isn't this kinda like the Mojave Experiment, ie. telling them it's something that it isn't?
- wigren, on 02/06/2009, -3/+155I had a IT "expert" look at my regular Ubuntu desktop and say: "I don't do Vista."
- sirhomer, on 02/06/2009, -6/+149Usually people assume I am using a next gen Windows when they look at my Linux installs. So this is not surprising at all!
- megamod, on 02/06/2009, -27/+135but the thing is KDE or linux for that matter IS NOT easy for the average user.
Specially ones that aren't tech savvy enough and don't know what Windows 7 is supposed to look like.
Now go show them how to enable hardware acceleration on your new install or how to install drivers if it's not automatically supported by the OS. - moethelawn, on 02/06/2009, -7/+104Protip: People saying Vista sucks and don't know the difference between Linux and Windows... They don't know what they're talking about
- bluechild, on 02/06/2009, -11/+102The point of the video is not that KDE is easier or better or anything. It is an answer to the Mojave experiment and it's "results" :P
- ATL, on 06/20/2009, -4/+83sounds like a douchebag to me
- Pheter, on 02/06/2009, -10/+79What's the point of this? They never showed people the real Windows 7 for comparison so people opinions simply means that they like the look of KDE 4..
As they said at the end of the video: they (and we) learn't nothing. - Fortune7, on 02/06/2009, -12/+62Ha! That's awesome!
I've never used KDE, personally, but I find it interesting that for a first glance, it looks easier to the average user. - copperkidd, on 02/06/2009, -2/+43Dugg for the "We learned nothing"
- Yazilliclick, on 02/06/2009, -0/+36Since when doesn't something look easier when it's somebody else just quickly flying through screens for you? :P
Really it's a good social example of just how agreeable people will normally be during things like this, and I'm not saying KDE is easier or more difficult, nice or not, I'm just saying that any short video you see of just the people they want to show that makes their points you'll always find agreeable people that perfectly fit. It's just the natural reaction to at least pretend to be impressed and for things to generally seem easy until you have to sit down and do it yourself. - SpoonMSU, on 02/06/2009, -9/+44Microsoft should have Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates do some commercials about nothing together.
- goldpig, on 02/06/2009, -2/+36i looked it up. you are right. my bad.
- StupotAce, on 02/06/2009, -5/+39These users are the same ones that have Windows already installed and working on their machines...so if the same thing was done for them with linux instead of Windows, I think they would be happy.
Yes, they'll have to learn how to install software for the distro they are using (easy), but they shouldn't have to deal with making hardware work since it'll already be done for them. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -8/+42its
- datdamonfoo, on 02/06/2009, -5/+35I'm somewhat fine that you used "learnt" instead of "learned"; you're probably European. However, "learn't" is just an abomination.
- 83457, on 02/06/2009, -1/+29@goldpig, you are exactly backwards on that
- jdmulloy, on 02/06/2009, -1/+26I've had people think mine looks like OS X, even though my notebook is a Toshiba. Don't know if it actually looks like OS X or if it's just that most people think Not Windows == Macintosh.
- Phate8263, on 02/06/2009, -2/+26Protip: Complete sentences need a subject AND a predicate.
- kcap122, on 02/06/2009, -1/+23I wish that they'd told the people at the end that they were watching a demonstration of Linux, then recorded the reactions. Like at the end of the Mojave Experiment. To the people that have a casual knowledge of it, linux has a reputation for being hard to use and hackish (not that it isn't). I wonder if they would've changed some minds that day?
- ThantiK, on 02/06/2009, -2/+24What would be the point of compiz fusion? - KDE has its own composter that has most of the features that "regular" compiz users would use.
- theloveman, on 02/06/2009, -3/+24You hit the nail on the friggin head!
- megagram, on 02/06/2009, -0/+21Sweet! Built-in composting in KDE? That'll save me a lot of trouble and stinkiness!
- rakeshishere, on 02/06/2009, -7/+28On the other side This video shows No one knows about KDE but atleast Vista has some reputation whether good/bad.
Those guys should have demonstrated Compiz Fusion and then people would shout- WOW!!! thats f*** great... and later said - but How much RAM does it need? - vitaminKsGood4u, on 02/06/2009, -2/+21but the average user wouldn't enable hardware acceleration. my mom uses ubuntu and never once did she ask me how to do that. all she does is open office, firefox and thunderbird and it works without a problem.
average users would buy it pre configured from Dell, and it would be just as easy for them as windows.
cause we are geeks and like to do more with our computers doesnt mean the average users does - bluechild, on 02/06/2009, -0/+19Yup, it's "its". Sorry :) My english is not perfect but then I could probably say the same about your greek :>
- Innuendo24, on 02/06/2009, -0/+18Goldpig: if you want it's to be possessive you have to take away his apostrophe. It really hates when you take away his apostrophe.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 02/06/2009, -5/+22Comparing preconfigured Windows machines to fresh Linux installs is retarded. I mean, which is easier to use, a preconfigured XP machine or a freshly installed XP machine? First boot configuration and general usability are different discussions.
What's more, if you're defending Windows then I can assure that drivers are NOT a conversation you want to have considering that essentially all mainstream Linux distros are going to work with 99% of hardware OOB. In fact, the only hangups are wireless drivers and graphics hardware. Yet, with a fresh XP or Vista install you are going to hunting down drivers online 99% of the time. It's practically a given that if you are reformatting your average Dell or HP that your going to be missing a few drivers after Windows gets finished installing, so if you want to compare apples to apples I'd say that Linux is actually, on average, simpler to just get working on a fresh install than Windows.
I'm not saying Linux is right for everybody (like I said, usability is a different conversation), but you're coming off like an uneducated fanboy/hater. - pentiumii, on 02/06/2009, -6/+23As linux user my self
I actually got to say it kinda pointless to say windows stole from KDE
when KDE original started off modeling them self after windows to make switching to linux easy for the average window user
sometimes people just don't do there research i guess they don't want pesky litte things like facts screwing with there point - Renton, on 02/06/2009, -5/+22I think they were making fun of Microsoft's "Mojave" campaign.
- Phate8263, on 02/06/2009, -2/+18I think you're confusing "easy" with "familiar".
- mwalker05, on 02/06/2009, -4/+20that doesnt make sense. the mojave "results" showed that people actually liked vista as long as they didnt know it was vista. basically it just shows people like anything shiny that they havent seen before
- TonyMurray, on 02/06/2009, -2/+18It's sad that some people think KDE 4 crashes a lot. I've been using it since 4.0 and have seen less than a handful of crashes, none with recent versions.
I think this can mostly be attributed to crappy packages produced by some distributions. It would be nice if they took their time to get the "new hotness" out the door in tip top shape instead of rushing to get it out first... - MRintheKeys, on 02/06/2009, -3/+18Awesome. An opinion against opinion fight!
- freezerburn666, on 02/06/2009, -3/+18cool vid and all but not very impressive to see the window pop up and for a split second see a "noisy box" before the window is drawn on the screen.... happens on my laptop when gnome loads, i mean... if u are going to showcase something.... just nit picking i guess
- mason092, on 02/07/2009, -0/+14Wow, he fails on many levels.
- geesamba, on 02/06/2009, -0/+14I would buy whatever they were not talking about.
- fxu1989, on 02/06/2009, -0/+13Sounds like someone needs to go back to elementary school.
- HonoredMule, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12I seem to recall they weren't talking about Linux.
...or Solaris. - noisymime, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12kwin FTW!
- Yazilliclick, on 02/06/2009, -0/+12None of those people would have asked how much RAM it takes. None of those people presented in that vid were even really paying attention to details, they're minds were about as shutoff and accepting as during a tv commercial.
- moghua, on 02/06/2009, -12/+23Yeah, because Windows users never have driver problems.
http://www.infoworld.com/article/08/02/05/Driver-p ... - Smuikas, on 02/07/2009, -2/+13Somebody walked past my desk the other day and did a double-take. They said "wait.. that's not a mac... that's not windows.. it looks really nice, wtf is it?"
(gnome with some extensive color/icon/theme customization and the Do smartdock) - chaoswings, on 02/07/2009, -1/+12It's worse people don't know their left from their right when using computers. I could walk up to people with OS X and tell them it is windows and they will take my word for it.
This video proves nothing. Only that people are computer illiterate. In most people's minds there exists only Windows.
As someone else stated people pretend to be impressed and agree to everything once you switch on a camera and of course they would never show those people that disagreed. - Fortune7, on 02/07/2009, -0/+11Point.
I especially agree with your point about people being agreeable. - GB570, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11Or all those pizza hut commercials they keep airing...kind of bugs me to see them be deceitful like that.
- unfinite, on 02/07/2009, -3/+13He noticed you were running Ubuntu and thought you'd like him if he said he doesn't like Vista. He just wanted to make friends and you blew him off. Now who's the douchebag?
But in all seriousness, the guy probably doesn't know *****. - inactive, on 02/06/2009, -1/+11id like to get user friendly with her
- fygars, on 02/06/2009, -3/+13No need to be redundant.
- Smoble, on 02/06/2009, -0/+9He says "i use Windows AND Mac" nice try on the witty comment though.
