- skektek, on 09/02/2008, -30/+247Driving people to Linux? Maybe.
Driving people back to XP? Definitely - Muskaburnt, on 09/02/2008, -44/+136did for me.
- kidwithsword, on 09/02/2008, -20/+106My father recently purchased an HP laptop that came with Vista Home Premium. It has 3GB RAM, a 2.0GHz dual-core processor, and ~130 GB Hard drive. I have used it many times, and I have not had any problems with it, with the exception of Internet Explorer 7 being ***** as hell. Sometimes it freezes and you have to close it with Task Manager. Other times, it refuses to close on its own, which results in, again, using Task Manager. Other than that, I see no downsides to Vista. It works flawlessly on his machine. I am sure that the only reason it is getting bad reviews is due to both reviewers and customers using sub par hardware/poorly chosen hardware to run the operating system.
- TheWindBlows, on 09/02/2008, -7/+71Ever think that Linux is what is driving people to Linux?
I decided to give Linux a try haven't really been looking back much and dread the thought of going back.
We all have our choices. - lVlyke, on 09/02/2008, -9/+60It's actually been the opposite for me. After using Vista for a little over a year, I still have yet to see a BSOD. From my experience, Vista has been a very stable and solid OS.
- ukblacknight, on 09/02/2008, -6/+56I've gotta say, as much as I don't like Vista - it's not so bad you need to reformat that many times. My experiences have never been with stability, in fact the only stability issue I've ever had with Vista is when the nVidia drivers failed, in which it reloaded them again.
If you're formatting 5 times, you're looking at hardware issues.
I switched over to Linux last year just to see what the hype was about... haven't looked back since! - estvir, on 09/02/2008, -31/+79Hahaha, NO. I'm amazed the article came to the same conclusion too considering he's still regurgitating the "XP IS BETTER THAN VISTALOLOL" line.
Since apparently so many people dislike Vista, if even a tiny amount of them switched to Linux than it would've been above 1.0% yet it's not.[1]
Very few people are switching away from Vista and drastically more are using it now than all other browsers (Aside from XP) and it's usage is increasing at a higher rate then all other operating systems. Now, you might claim this is 'cause Vista is preinstalled well guess what, this article is putting forward the question that Vista is driving people away from it and if they were, those people would've got their new machines and installed another OS, but they HAVEN'T.
Most people will simply stick with Vista and realise that all those bad things they heard aren't really true and they'll continue treating their computer like their toaster and any other appliance. Hopefully one day you people will realise there's a real world out there.
Oh, and classy article. I think that writer is taking a little too much inspiration from the idiots over at The Register.

- KolosoK, on 09/02/2008, -5/+48I don't understand. I have had no troubles with Vista at all! Well, there was this one time when I failed a TCP/IP connections limit patch, but that was quickly fixed by the recovery CD in about 10-20 minutes. Othewise, no BSODs, no long startup times, no long shutdown times. You just have to configure it correctly. I'm running Vista Ultimate on my desktop (Q9450, 4gb pc2-8500, ATI 4870) and Vista Home Premium on my laptop (T7300, 2gb pc2-5300, nVidia 8400m GS).
- unafraidsage, on 09/02/2008, -2/+39I don't have issues with BSODs....
- huff51, on 09/02/2008, -3/+40this guy should have test drove mojave
- oobuntu, on 09/02/2008, -0/+37you never used Windows NT before SP3. even farting near the machine caused BSOD
- inactive, on 09/02/2008, -15/+50I have been using Vista for over a year and a half now. Not one problem ever.
- Rolcol, on 09/02/2008, -6/+41and as it did for me three. At first it was "ooo shiny shiny" and then reality kicked in. I only have 1GB of RAM and it would run really slow. Took forever to shutdown.
- chaosium, on 09/02/2008, -10/+44"you think they'll stay with XP still?"
Why not? It works. - slugicide, on 09/02/2008, -17/+50As long as Microsoft can afford to spend $300 million per year advertising their OS, they can put out total ***** and people will still use it. Imagine what $300 million a year of Linux development would do for the movement.
- aimhelix, on 09/02/2008, -7/+39Nah.. not really. I guess I'm one of the few where my Vista X64 system is stable as hell. Not a big fan of Terminal, but that's just me.
- Murdats, on 09/02/2008, -12/+44I have to say either you are lying or you are doing something very wrong.
- Ynot82, on 09/02/2008, -5/+36and from XP to where, exactly
XP is getting seriously long in the tooth (coming up to 8 years old)
If Windows 7 bombs as hard as Vista has, you think they'll stay with XP still?
they've got to go somewhere,
and Linux & Mac are the only other choices - fandyboy, on 09/02/2008, -7/+34Been using Vista SP1 for three months now, it's been solid as a rock and it's easy to use. My only critisims are the lack of innovation over XP.
- Reziarfg, on 09/02/2008, -17/+44I don't know where people are getting this whole "Vista is bad" thing. I got a free copy of Vista Business from some promotion I found through Digg. I said, why not, gave it a shot. Everything seemed to work decently on my fairly new hardware(I'm really into gaming, 3GHz Core 2, 2GB RAM, 8800GT).
Now, I still dual boot Ubuntu Linux but it can't in its current state be my full time OS. I demand too many things it can't offer just yet. My TV tuner doesn't work with it for example. WINE, while being good for a lot of things can't handle all the video games I like to play. And of course there are some development platforms like Photoshop and Dreamweaver that you just can't beat. However if I need to boot quickly to check something online it's great.
Anyways, about two months ago or so I was having issues with some new graphics driver in Vista and I had to go back to XP. No harm no foul, didn't really make a difference to me as I didn't use any directX 10 things yet. However about 2 weeks ago my audio was getting choppy, again for no apparently reason, so I still had my Vista disc lying around. Upgraded, went smoothly(took forever, but went smoothly).
So, everything is good and I'm on Vista now. Been working fine so far. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -9/+33Every OS has its teething problem in the beginning. XP was considered BAD for a long time. There is absolutely nothing wrong with using Vista now, especially since SP1. It's very stable at this point.
It's about time people jumped off the hating bandwagon and actually tried Vista again, properly configured and fully updated.
I also use Ubuntu and OSX, so I'm not an M$ fanboy! - jgaba24, on 09/02/2008, -37/+59Not in my case... I switched over due to M$ business practices. Sure am glad I did
- monkeyv, on 09/02/2008, -4/+25Yes. I have had two friends ask me about linux due to vista. Its debatable if they will actually switch or not but it is causing people to look for alternatives.
- Ynot82, on 09/02/2008, -3/+22because the hardware will surpass what the OS was designed to deal with
new connectors (USB3), extra CPU instructions, hybrid CPU/GPU's, etc. etc.
The OS needs to be designed to utilise the hardware
and without updates to the OS, these probably won't be available to XP
granted, you have SP3 recently released,
but I seriously doubt there'll be another service pack
it'll get to the stage where XP can't deal with the hardware on machines - BassCadet, on 09/02/2008, -12/+29So you go from XP to Vista, hate Vista, and then go to Linux?
Why not go back to XP? I find it hard to believe that Linux is a more comfortable solution for the Windows user than Vista.
This seems like yet another attempt to foist an operating system upon the rest of us. Use what you want. Stop trying to force things down our throats. - Transmission3k, on 09/02/2008, -2/+20And yet another. I, too, appreciated the "new shiny!" interface, but then realized it was a lumbering beast with very little ability to fine-tune it to my liking. I had already set up a media server with Ubuntu, and left the interface in there to dick around with. I finally got tired of Vista on my main machine, so I set it up for dual-boot. I can count on one hand how many times I've flipped back to Vista in the past year.
Hell...my girlfriend doesn't even seem to notice the switch, really. - Havek, on 09/02/2008, -11/+28Yea I have no idea why people hate vista so much, i personally find it to be the best windows that they have produced thus far. I feel that its really stable and i like the look and feel of it.
- mutesounds, on 09/02/2008, -5/+22The only people I know (personally) who complain about Vista are the ones who buy the $299 budget PCs from Walmart or, God forbid, Best Buy. They have Celeron processors, 512 MB RAM max of which at least 128 MB is taken by the on-board video. Factor in the bloat the manufacturers add to startup, how do you expect people to react to Vista? Buy a decent computer, educate yourself on how to use a computer and remove the crap, and its not too bad.
- sirbeta, on 09/02/2008, -9/+25Never had that many problems with Vista. You botched your install somehow or are doing something very wrong while using the machine. Either that or some hardware is failing.
The biggest problem I've had with Vista so far was SP1 not installing properly and Creative being major douchebags about giving us proper sound drivers. But Microsoft gives free tech support for the SP1 install problem until some time in 2009 I believe.
Problems with Vista crashing are largely exaggerated. I've had people tell me how terrible Vista was without even using it before once in their life (typical friend of a friend of an ex boyfriend of a cousin yaddayadda told them and like sheep they believe it), so it's pretty hard to take such claims seriously anymore. - inactive, on 09/02/2008, -12/+28aside from the occasional BSOD, I like Vista (ultimate).
- ry4nsm1th, on 09/02/2008, -2/+15Yea I've never seen a BSOD on Vista, or even had a "crash" of any sort.
- alphaterminus, on 09/02/2008, -0/+13You clearly never bought a Windows ME computer.
- blargis, on 09/02/2008, -11/+24I am using Vista right now and I can not live without it. I have a intel Q6700 with 1 gig of ram and Vista runs lightning fast... I don't know what all of you are crying about..
- conorkirk, on 09/02/2008, -1/+13I went from XP to Vista to Linux.
I dunno why, i just heard some good stuff about linux, i had a friend install it for me (I didn't have any cds) and it is really cool, what with burning windows and whatnot? it works with steam so i can play hl2 and all that (steam was just as simple as a double click and install :D) - Ynot82, on 09/02/2008, -4/+16http://digg.com/linux_unix/GNU_Linux_Desktop_Marke ...
not saying it's any more accurate than your hitslink.com source
cause there's no way to reliably track the number of linux deployments
but anyhow.... - HangoverBoy, on 09/02/2008, -0/+12I haven't used Vista, but XP has firmly driven me to Linux. I installed Ubuntu two weeks ago on my primary machine (in a dual boot setup with XP), and haven't looked back. The only time I even booted up the XP side in the last two weeks was to watch some online Olympic videos at nbc.com that required some stupid microsoft plugin to watch.
I love it so far and dislike Windows more every day. - sHockz, on 09/02/2008, -4/+16vista isnt driving me away from windows....in fact nothing is driving me towards any other os besides the fact that they are all catching up to windows..finally.
i like vista, its stable, pretty, and can run my games.
i like linux, its pretty, customizable, and great for browsing digg and checking email
im not a big mac follower, dont like troubleshooting them, they arent upgradeable(unless you want to spend millions), they cost ENTIRELY too much, but they look pretty and do my photoshop and 3dsmax like a champ!
all the main os's have their pros/cons. nothing is driving anyone anywhere. not until someone can wrap all those up into one awesome OS. We can call is AWESOME-O'S (anyone get that, haha)
vista runs fine, it is a great OS, so stop dogging it. remember when XP came out? everyone hated it until SP1 when they got a bunch of bugs figured out. the first year of support was horrid, and everyone thought it was another bust like ME. turns out, XP was one of the best. so lets give vista some time people, ur all so quick to judge. - madvulcan, on 09/02/2008, -2/+14For some people going back to XP is not an option. For example if you buy new laptop it most likely comes with Windows Vista. Unless you are willing to use illegitimate copy of XP, then hunt drivers for that laptop devices, using Linux may be the easiest option.
- yensed, on 09/02/2008, -1/+14Then you weren't using it correctly.
- badassninja, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Woah woah woah, I can believe a lot of things. But not seeing a BSOD on 95 is not one of them.
- OomBok, on 09/02/2008, -1/+12i also had no problems with BSOD on vista. Had to go back to XP for the same reason I can't use linux: my audio hardware and software don't play nice with vista yet. It was *almost* there, but not quite. These anti-Vista articles are just the last resort of tech bloggers with nothing else to write about.
- ExRe, on 09/02/2008, -0/+11Same here. I've had a few issues with ***** applications in Vista x64 (mostly poorly coded games from a few years ago). Other than that I've had no issues beyond Creative drivers.
- NotACYBORG, on 09/02/2008, -3/+13@smotpoker
I dunno, but if the OS works on countless other hardware setups (mine included) I would be inclined to look at the user. Or maybe more bad hardware purchases. - niradg, on 09/02/2008, -6/+16My computer came with it preinstalled. It's awful. It has no useful enhancements over XP, and basic tasks like moving files are incredibly slow.
- hobbes888, on 09/02/2008, -0/+10It IS true, at least for me and many of my coworkers (we're all developers). I had never seriously considered switching to Mac until I used Vista for awhile and realized MS would force me to move off XP at some point.
I had worked with Vista enough to know that I really, really hated it, so I took the plunge and got a Mac. At first I spent some time getting a Windows XP VM (VMWare) set up all nice, thinking I'd spend a lot of time in Windows still, but now I hardly ever fire it up unless there's some IE7 website problem I have to troubleshoot.
Mac OS X isn't perfect, but I've been happy with the switch and doubt I'll ever go back. Thanks, Vista! - Flamekebab, on 09/02/2008, -2/+12Several laptops I've had to buy for new members of staff have come with Vista preinstalled. These have been C2D machines with 2GB RAM. Vista runs slow as molasses on them, it's horrid.
- cmol, on 09/02/2008, -7/+17But there is a difference between using someones laptop sometimes, and having your own system. If you just surf the internet you can't do much wrong. It's the thing about making it your laptop. Making it custom for your needs.
I dual boot Ubuntu and Xp (gaming). I see no reason why i should "go vista". - WafflesID, on 09/02/2008, -6/+15I have several computers. I have one with vista ultimate, and had another running ubuntu 8.10.
ubuntu is getting close, but it's just not quite there yet. I reformatted and put on vista business. The things I wanted to do just ***** work in windows without a lot of the hassle involved with linux. Mostly hardware related.
Just seems like everytime I needed to do something that wasn't specifically included with ubuntu it required more effort to get working than it should have. Yeah, linux is far more robust than windows, but that comes at a cost. - db113456, on 09/02/2008, -8/+17The real world is what we make of it, not what the statistics tell you. If i install 10 boxes, there are 10 boxes, if 6 other Linux gurus install 10 boxes, there are 60 boxes. Does your statistics show any of those 60 boxes, or are you just spouting what is put in mouth ?
These stats are sales stats, once you take it home and have Linux installed on it, it is a Linux box and not a vista. And it will never show up in any statistics whatsoever. The 4% desktop growth this year (sales) is mostly due to the eee pc and Friends of ultralights, but believe me, for every eee i saw in my circle of people, i saw 2-3 other computers ranging from laptops to desktops running Linux either fully or partly. -
