- oomfoofoo, on 11/04/2008, -1/+10Debian people weren't jealous of ubuntu's success, they were mad that canonical was not contributing back to the community the way they were supposed to.
- weizbox, on 11/04/2008, -2/+6oobuntu - 'Actually, Canonical does contribute back....'
Yea.. they say they do, but when they keep upstreaming bad code, it doesn't really help anyone out and gives a lot of other people a good bit of work to do. Look what they did with the BBC plugin for Totem... they put a bunch of apt-code in it instead of using a standard, like PackageKit. Lots of other distros and independent projects use standards most of the time to make it easier for the people they're upstreaming to, but in this case, Ubuntu just gave them more work to do. - oomfoofoo, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4Yes, they may have thrown money at some projects, but are they REQUIRED to do that? It's like they gave those projects money hoping the complaints & criticism would go away. Also, they've been accused of lack of contribution towards kernel development since the beginning, it has been just recent times.
- simpleboy, on 11/04/2008, -1/+4Only because it talked about Ubuntu right? Com'on weizbox, admit that Ubuntu is far better than Gentoo. Why you keep on burying each and every Ubuntu news/articles/tutorials?
- weizbox, on 11/04/2008, -3/+6Another rant, provoked by a previous rant. Buried...
- oomfoofoo, on 11/04/2008, -0/+2Only 10,000? How can that be when fanboys like to claim that ubuntu has 8 million users?
- weizbox, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1'Ubuntu is far better than Gentoo'
For some people, yea... but not for me. I personally like having a system I can tweak and customize to my liking, as well as the ability to make those changes with very little effort compared to other distros (like Ubuntu)
'Why you keep on burying each and every Ubuntu news/articles/tutorials?'
Check my history and you'll think otherwise. I digg Ubuntu articles if they're good... but a lot of them, like this one that never got past 52 diggs anyways, I bury. - jrepin, on 11/04/2008, -3/+4Exactly, and it is the same with Linux Kernel, Xorg and other components of the Linux ecosystem. Canonical doesn't contribute back, or contribute very little. And when one distribution is so popular and doesn't contribute back it is bad for Linux.
- ZaZ2137, on 11/04/2008, -4/+5I wouldn't mind some of the smaller debian distro devs being merged into Ubuntu I know linux is all about having it your way, but with so many choices its hard to know which for you and we could certainly use some of the very talented developers in other projects adding to the Ubuntu experience.
- weizbox, on 11/05/2008, -0/+1So your saying its highly customizable? That's a bad thing? That's the reason I use it :)
What does Gentoo have to do with this article anyways? - vortemenene, on 11/04/2008, -2/+2Concerning Gentoo, this pic says it all...

- ssam, on 11/04/2008, -3/+3canonical/ubuntu contribute a lot back to free software
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Website/Content/UbuntuCont ...
true, it is mostly not kernel stuff, but it is still important.
at least 10,000 people test ubuntu development versions, and find and report bugs. i think at is a very large fraction of people testing gnome and the kernel.
launchpad hosts many important projects like inkscape, jokosher, miro etc. - inactive, on 11/04/2008, -4/+4Ubuntu is good for open source. Since Ubuntu came on the scene more mainstream interest has been drummed up for open source software and Linux in general. Smaller distros would simply remain small regardless of Ubuntu coming into play. If anything, small distros will benefit from new users gaining interest in Linux after using Ubuntu.
- oobuntu, on 11/04/2008, -3/+3Actually, Canonical does contribute back. And after the initial criticism, they contributed financially to Gnome, Kde, QT, and others. They contribute in many ways. It is true that recently they were accused of lack of contribution towards linux kernel development, maybe they will decide to help
- advix, on 11/04/2008, -3/+2I totally agree with this article. In FOSS world no one can be jealous. Everyone can join the team or take the source and do it better. The better some project is, the sooner the success appear. And with success comes also the money hand in hand.
- ssam, on 11/04/2008, -3/+1why would the totem bbc pluggin talk to the package manager? totem already has code to do that.
