- FolkTheory, on 12/14/2008, -14/+135BREAKING NEWS: Linux user has a wife. [read more]
- Gndoab, on 12/14/2008, -2/+68How did a 4 paragraph blog about some guy's wife not having problems with ubuntu reach the front page? It's completely void of any details.
- drgmdp, on 12/14/2008, -29/+90no, it is not.
- ericdano, on 12/14/2008, -6/+60So, a blogging nerd's wife.........yeah.........um...........lets think about it a little more shall we?
- FlamingYak, on 12/14/2008, -1/+37This reminds me of the time my room mate and I experimented with Linux....
- TheLuce, on 12/14/2008, -12/+46The dude's wife is Japanese... everyone knows how much more advanced the avg Japanese user is over the avg US user. Buried for inacurrate.
- inactive, on 12/14/2008, -3/+37It says 'LINUX' in the title.
The geeks of the internet who are into Linux have a superiority complex and need to dig anything that has Linux in it.
seriously.
it's true. - Kronos6948, on 12/14/2008, -9/+40What's wrong with wanting a free OS to go mainstream?
- Kbiscu1t, on 12/14/2008, -14/+42I don't. As much as people like to tell people that Linux is user-friendly, it's not. To the average computer user Linux would put them in a world of confusion. Don't get me wrong -- I love Linux, but I just don't think average people and kids will be able to use it comfortably and easily.
- robdazomba, on 12/14/2008, -4/+31> I wish people on Digg would STFU about linux.
Then why are you talking about it? - inactive, on 12/13/2008, -0/+24-Carlin.
- iJessicaRabbit, on 12/13/2008, -5/+28(fem) I wasn't a fan of Xandros (on 701 eeepc) but once I had Ubuntu installed I was instantly attached and in love. It's definitely a system that could be spread around easily.
- MagicHobo, on 12/14/2008, -5/+26Advanced you say?
- inactive, on 12/13/2008, -9/+30Yes. Why wouldn't it be? My mom knows how to use Vista just fine.

- edzilla, on 12/14/2008, -7/+27This article is in "Technology=>Linux,Unix". What the hell are you doing reading articles in there if you don't care about linux?
- bobbyi, on 12/14/2008, -2/+22I think Do ***** is under the Tools menu.

- Amazetbm, on 12/14/2008, -0/+16Kids would probably get up to speed with Linux quicker than adults who are set in their ways. But then again, my first computer was a Commodore 64, so...
- theaceoffire, on 12/14/2008, -0/+15Anyone can _use_ XP, but to set it up and maintain it, it does take computer know-how.
- ScientistBlah, on 12/14/2008, -2/+16I'm burying you not because I disagree but because you're a douchebag for linking to your blog.
- mrgeekguy, on 12/14/2008, -7/+21Pic of his wife:
http://angryweb.files.wordpress.com/2008/04/linux_ ... - Rolcol, on 12/13/2008, -5/+19"... but to get all your hardware working with the correct drivers you still nedd to know a few things ..."
Same thing with Windows. Installing an OEM version of the XP without drivers requires a scavenger hunt especially if you're trying to install it on a computer that came with Vista. HP didn't have the drivers specific to XP so I had to spend several hours looking for the drivers to the Ethernet card, the graphics card, the sound card, and the printer drivers. I wish my dad's proprietary software had multi-platform support.... - inactive, on 12/14/2008, -1/+15Only on Digg...
- robdazomba, on 12/14/2008, -7/+20> Everyone I know is using it.
So what is that, like, 8 people? - lexington86, on 12/14/2008, -8/+21Not necessarily. Unless by "average" you mean "median".
- prodigitalson, on 12/14/2008, -1/+14Beg to differ on the kids... My 7 year old's box is a stock Kubuntu installation. The only thing i had to do was show him the new icons and names he needed to look for instead of what he was used to on Windows.
- Kronos6948, on 12/14/2008, -0/+12Or a black belt in Google-Fu.
- lilSears, on 12/14/2008, -5/+17It won't be ready until I can download ANY program and install it without using the terminal. I don't care THAT much about using the terminal but every time I can't just double click on a file, or put it some place for it to work, or just have an easy install manager, I have to google how to install it; which doesn't take much time but I shouldn't HAVE to. I still don't know what chmod +x means or even what ./ does. It took me a while just to realize that I have to change directories or cd for it to work. There's no reason in this day in age that there can't be an easy installer like every other main operating system. Sure debian has synaptic and the repositories and all that, but that's really only half of the programs out there. Game files mostly have to be downloaded and installed by use of text and it's just annoying.
And for some reason, automounting hard drives/partitions isn't on by default? What the hell?
I'm using Ubuntu btw. It's these little quirks that won't let linux into being mainstream. Make it easy, make it stupid proof, make it look good (but different and still function as in ditch compiz but keep some of the effects that are actually useful, have it incorporated into the window manager) and keep the terminal. That way everyone's happy and more people will switch over. I'm not computer stupid but there are some really technical things that I'm still having to figure out, let alone people like my parents that have a hard time attaching a file to an email. - DeathRay2K, on 12/14/2008, -13/+24How's that, exactly?
Vista works with a huge majority of software and hardware out of the box, and it's actually easy to use. Basically, It's got everything Linux doesn't. - CalcProgrammer1, on 12/14/2008, -6/+17The latest Ubuntu is just as easy to use as the latest Windows 7 leak. People think Windows is easy because they grew up with it and have been using it for a while, but seriously, Ubuntu isn't difficult. Plus it does everything that ordinary users need (e-mail, IM, Internet, media). Gamers should stick with Windows, as games need DirectX and such, but most users can use Linux fine.
As for iPod, there are programs to sync it with in Ubuntu. I don't have one but my friend used his in Linux before. - inactive, on 12/14/2008, -2/+13Wanna see a cool trick?
"As much as people like to tell people that Windows is user-friendly, it's not. To the average computer user Windows would put them in a world of confusion."
The trick is so cool because it's so ***** true. If 3rd party vendors did everything for Linux that they did for Windows, the average user would feel just at home. Conversely, if you ask the average computer user to install Windows, they'd be ***** dumbfounded and then get angry when their screen resolution sucked dick on initial boot. - Gareth321, on 12/14/2008, -5/+16The boobs say GO but the faces says NO
- AikoMiko, on 12/14/2008, -6/+17My mom uses Linux. She doesn't even know what it is. It took her about 10 minutes to make the transition from Windows to Ubuntu.
- outoforder, on 12/14/2008, -4/+15Well, its settled then.

Now stop bitching and let the people who do like Linux enjoy articles. - Darkhacker, on 12/13/2008, -2/+12"the people behind it are the biggest problem since they could never agree on anything, especially a way to make a true single file install like the other operating systems"
The Linux Foundation has chosen RPM for the Linux Standards Base (LSB). Ubuntu typically uses .deb, but LSB compiled RPMs will install and run just fine on Ubuntu.
"the community often doesn't care that the average computer user just wants it to work and not know anything about how so they can do their work"
Linux has only gotten easier to use over the years and people have been striving for simplicity for average users for a long time now. The article is a perfect example of the user not knowing how it works and being able to use it. If you've had a bad experience with Linux in the past, then I'm sorry to hear about it. Not everyone's experience reflect your own however.
"Also, what's with these shared libraries on Linux? it seems that they're all put in the same file and at first glance that's about as bad as putting all the program dlls on windows into system32, a practice long abandoned. It seems that the libraries just get extensions like .52 and .54 after the .so extension as a work around, any programmer care to comment?"
Shared libraries are not put into the same file. They have their own files. And system32.dll is just one dll file. It doesn't represent multiple libraries so you're wrong there too. As for the numbers after the .so extension, those represent version numbers. If for some reason you have more than one .so file that is named the same way but with a different version at the end, then it is likely there to preserve compatibility. Sometimes they'll keep old versions for compatibility, other times the old version just points to the new one so there isn't any duplicated data.
For someone who thinks they are qualified to maintain a blog about why desktop Linux will fail, you sure do lack an elementary understanding of Linux. You might as well maintain a blog called "Why the Large Hadron Collider Will Fail." I'm sure your middle school friends would love to read it. - ScientistBlah, on 12/14/2008, -11/+20Linux going mainstream would be terrible for current linux users, then they couldn't talk about how much better and smarter they are for using a superior OS.
- Krekko, on 12/14/2008, -50/+59I wish people on Digg would STFU about linux.
People who complain about Apple Fanboys have never browsed digg, or met a Linux one.
Its good we know, but do you have to go boasting your e-peen everyone because you use Linux? no.
You use Linux... grats... quit trying to make it mainstream. Wont happen for a very long time if at all. - Koskun, on 12/14/2008, -0/+9And that is not the fault of Microsoft, that is the fault of HP.
An OEM version of XP is the same as every other version out there in that it has the driver database in it. It is HP that chose to "name" their hardware so XP doesn't recognize it initially.
The same goes with Linux in whatever flavor you want to use. It isn't the problem of the OS maker that there isn't a driver for this or that. The real issue is with the manufacturer of the hardware and them releasing the driver, or what is needed to make a driver. - inactive, on 12/14/2008, -1/+9Lexington: I'm sure he's referring to a standard normal distribution of computer users :)
- strictnein, on 12/14/2008, -8/+16You tell the "average user" that they no longer have Microsoft Word and they freak the ***** out.
