Video of the plugins in action. Looks awesome. - mournsanity, on 10/11/2007, -0/+31This looks amazing. Congrats to the developers for sorting out their differences and making this merge a reality!
- RCcola159, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24@dankoozy (#7292796)
Wasn't compiz the original project anyways? So I'm guessing that's why the Compiz name stays. - cantormath, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17Linux does it better everytime
- neuralzen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13I play Half-life 2 in cedega with beryl running, no problems. Not any significant frame hit either, maybe 2 on average or so...
- Borramakot, on 10/11/2007, -4/+16Compiz was the original, but it seems like Beryl has been making the greater strides.
- Sultana, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14Wow!
I'm impressed. I can't wait to download this and try it out! - aldenhg, on 10/11/2007, -3/+14But will it play nice with games? It's kind of a pain to turn Compiz/Beryl off just to play some Enemy Territory.
- bmxboy661, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13in conclusion:
Compiz = good
screaminlkn = bad - Borramakot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+116 months ago? I would agree with you. Now, Ive had a couple of bugs, but beryl has made some incredible strides in both features and stability.
- dawesdust12, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Do they make an input device that small?
- pdiddle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9There's actually a couple of beryl plugins/features currently missing in compiz fusion. The most noticeable for me being you can no longer switch sides of the cube using mouse wheel over the desktop. However I haven't had the white/black window bug since I started using it.
- SendDerek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@masterfunk:
It's called the Avant Window Navigator. It can be found here: http://code.google.com/p/avant-window-navigator/ - amrush4th, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10because every single new user for beryl spells it wrong when trying to look it up the first time. other then that, I think beryl is a cooler name

a decent OS? Compiz Fusion runs on Linux... thats it. im sure it wont be the most stable piece of code written for Linux but as Darkhacker said, its still in development and will improve as time goes on - lengau, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7@aldenhg - I'm not sure if Fusion has it, but Beryl has a setting to unredirect fullscreen windows, so it shouldn't be a problem (I've tested it on everything from frozen bubble to Quake 4, and there's no noticable difference on a GeForce 6600).
- pdiddle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Using the latest SVN playing ut2004 in fullscreen has no noticeable performance loss. In a completely unreliable experiment, glxgears runs @ ~6600fps, down from 7800fps. That's of course, windowed.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Right click on the Beryl Manager icon, click "select window manager" choose metacity. That is _if_ Beryl caused a performance loss (we're on AIGLX get with the times) in the first place.

Clearly Linux is just too much to deal with for the non-die hard techie. /sarcasm - Darkhacker, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7It's still in development. It will improve as time goes on. It's still pretty new and may become more unstable with the recent merge but it will eventually level out and the fact that both teams are now working together means that they can focus their efforts on creating the best system possible instead of reinventing the wheel.
- Borramakot, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8No argument, but for me it has been reasonably stable, fast, and pretty enough to convert my girlfriend to Linux on graphics alone.
- chieferer, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7they could have at least merged the names: Coryl (sounds pretty cool to me) Beriz (Kinda wierd) or gone with something completely different like just fusion. my 2 cents
- coredump0x01, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Same here, No noticeable performance loss under Beryl 0.2.0 while running Quake 4, Postal 2, Legends, Nexuiz, and even games under Wine with an Nvidia GeForce 7300le 128mb.
- MasterFunk, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Hey does anyone know what type of tool bar is used in the video that solongfx posted? Thanks
- crazybrit, on 10/11/2007, -5/+8borramakot - that's because they just crammed as many pluigins as possible into Beryl without worrying about stability.
- mattfata, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5And did you report the bug on their bug tracker?
- maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7OK, so visually speaking, we seem to be on a "reflections" kick now...we've just been through transparency. We're also stuck on the subtle-gradients stage after passing through the glass-everything-and-brushed-metal stage.
Any bets on what's next? Apple is giving their dock some perspective. When I saw that, I wondered if we'll soon see 3D icons developed in COLLADA format? Window toolkits using 3D effects and animations? Softbody windows? And is 3D for desktop metaphors pretty much dead?
And what will be the successor to flames/burning stuff? Animated metaballs of water that have true refraction indices? I have lots of questions :-) - cdmarcus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2The configuration tool is also much nicer looking and more intuitive than beryl-settings. Unfortunately, some plugins are still not as configurable as they were in Beryl. One thing that I missed when I tried Compcomm (now Compiz Fusion) was that unlike with Beryl, I couldn't type into windows when they were in Scale mode.
- RCcola159, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@chieferer (#7294349)
Beriz and Cream! - maruchan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2oop
- JonLatane, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Alright, two points here:
1) To the guy that suggested Coryl, you'll be happy to know that Coral was actually one of several name choices, although Compiz Fusion was the one selected.
2) While it may *seem* like Beryl was making greater strides, anyone who has actually looked at and/or tried to improve the code will know that's not true. Beryl was making strides in the direction of features, no doubt. Way ahead of Compiz. But the codebase was a mess, and if you even thought about trying to test your code formally, you would end up way behind the rest of the project. - Reziarfg, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6"Whatever. Turn it off if you want to play a fancy game. Just like in any other OS of the same caliber. Oh wait what other OS?"
@meno911: Playing in Vista there are quite a few games i can think of that turn off Aero because they aren't compatible with my desktop theme, or some other random error like that. - UKsHaDoW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I would not call Beryl Stylish. Fire effects and crazy ***** going on screen is not stylish. Just very Messy. The best way to achieve style is to be minimalist , clean and unified. eg http://www.gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre2/57310-2.jpg
- inactive, on 08/26/2008, -0/+1I don't know about Compiz Fusion (site not working), but you can already do smoke and fire effects with Beryl...
See: http://ryanlesterstore.googlepages.com/ubuntupwnx0rs (ironically, those screenshots of my computer are Mac-themed...) - FuzzyCat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3
Still can't I use the top and bottom faces of the cube? waaaaaaaaaaahhh! - kodek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's all about having an organic desktop; something that looks more like how real-life objects look. Things in real life don't just magically pop up out of nowhere.
- mygrayarea, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Yeah, the whole dock perspective thingy makes me think it's just an interim step to something 3d.
- JonForTheWin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Coral does sound a lot better than "Compiz Fusion". The "fusion" part makes it sound, bad. :-|
- UKsHaDoW, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The smoke effect has nothing to do with Leopard. Its a program called disco using core image. The guy who created it got flamed for using the smoke effect. Nobody really thought it was any good.
- pauldonnelly, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1That probably depends on your video card. If you've got Intel you're probably golden.
- init100, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1"Beryl was everyones option and Compiz sucked big time!"
I read that Beryl just cared about nice effects, but not much more. The Compiz project worked on useful infrastructure that would also benefit Beryl a lot. Thus, they understood that working together might be a good idea. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1is there a wall feature, like matisse?
- Gerz1219, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2@mattfata -- Well, that would sort of be a moot point, seeing as how Beryl has been discontinued.
Anyway, installed Compiz Fusion today, and it's definitely the best of both worlds. A few minor Beryl features are missing, but it's running completely stable -- in stark contrast to Beryl, which gave me nothing but system slowdowns, black window bugs, refresh issues, and frequent crashes. I loved the idea, but it never actually worked for more than twenty minutes. Maybe it was my fault, but I doubt it, because Fusion is doing exactly what I wanted Beryl to do, and without much tweaking. All they have to do is get a few of the missing Beryl features working, then they can get to the real task, which is figuring out some sort of reasonable configuration utility that splits the difference between "wobbly windows or cube" and "you can configure absolutely everything, including the friction and spring coefficients for your wobbly windows." - kevmaster, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I've written an easy how to on setting up Compiz-Fusion in Ubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn)
http://kevin.vanzonneveld.net/techblog/article/enable_compizfusion_in_ubuntu_feisty/ - diggrj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0well wobbly windows may not have much of practical significane. But they represent the technical prowess of compiz fusion. It shows what all they can do with as minimum hardware as possible(intended reference to vista aero) anyways, who dosent like to showoff :). Wobbly and all comes in really handy when ur showing off ur uber sexy linux desktop to your windoze-fanboy friends :)
- Chrelion, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm surprised that, as of when I started composing this post, the icons were so familiar to me that I had to comment. They look very much as though they were pulled right from OS X. Wait, they were. Otherwise, though, I do find this project impressive and innovative. Though some of its ideas I don't know how practical they are. Wobbly Windows in Beryl? It's pretty, but what does it actually do? I'll eat these words, I'm sure, when someone finds a practical reason for some of its superfluous effects.
- Drakkor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1they need to add something shiny, that way we would be engrossed for hours !
/satire - tiekyl, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Didn't really require stopping the use of beryl. Just..disuse of the minimizing / un-minimizing animations?
- bladus, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0This looks awesome. First KDE4 and now Compiz Fusion ... i can't decide ;)
- Gogogo111, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Looks pretty cool. Had to stop using Beryl because of 1 bug that would annoy me. Whenever I would minimize or maximize something, it would sort of lag. Right when the animation was about to finish, it would stop for 1/4 of a second and then continue. Making the whole expierience annoying. If they fix that bug, I would be happy.
- Sabretou, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1Actually, I don't find the new features impressive. I was thinking they're going to have those burning and smokey effects that the next Mac is supposed to have.
