- carpespasm, on 02/26/2008, -2/+87I think you accidentally typed a question mark after that statement.
- argylesocks, on 02/26/2008, -3/+55I can't wait to see devices using this. It's amazing how far portable device os's have come.
- SDL486, on 02/26/2008, -3/+55Ubuntu will eventually become an OS that is widely used by the public. Integrating Ubuntu into different parts of the market is taking the step in the right direction. Slow and steady wins the race ;)
- tange1, on 02/26/2008, -3/+54This sounds like something for a EeePC, but isn't there already a customized ubuntu for EeePC's?
- t3hbagel, on 02/26/2008, -4/+31Dugg because that was some thorough pwnage.
- TacticalPenguin, on 02/26/2008, -0/+22Yes, called eeeXubuntu. I think it suits the eee better than an OS made for mobile devices because the eee still has the power and capability and use of a normal computer and doesn't need extreme comprimises to be taken.
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+21This is for touchscreen devices - not the EEEPC
- lenninct, on 02/26/2008, -4/+25i wish my smarthphone was smarther than it is, if only i could run linux on it... :(
- sqrt7744, on 02/26/2008, -1/+20yeah but it's just a community tweak of xubuntu. I might try this Ubuntu Mobile on the EEE when mine arrives in the mail.... :-)
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+18IIRC, according to statistics on Ubuntu apt mirrors, there's around 10 million unique users.
- ukblacknight, on 02/26/2008, -1/+14You're missing the point. It's like saying: The skies blue?
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+13The cool thing is that Ubuntu mobile UI is being done by the Avant Window Navigator dude.
If you want a proper view, open the spec PDF and zoom Evince to 400%. - plingboot, on 02/26/2008, -0/+11This isn't something for the Eee. The Eee is easily capable of runnng a full blown OS. Normal Ubuntu runs fine with a few patches here and there for wifi etc. Compiz runs without a hitch.
- t3hbagel, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10What devices is this designed for? It looks promising, but something that's purpose-built like this must have some kind of hardware in mind.
- antych, on 02/26/2008, -3/+13I want Ubuntu on my mobile phone, no more Symbian, no more crippled iPhones, no more crap, I want Linux!
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10Sure, Android an Ubuntu Mobile are both for touch devices, but Ubuntu mobile is designed for more powerful systems, with more screen real estate.
- daftman, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10why would you want to use ***** activex technology? The 90s is gone man, let it go.
- diazamet, on 02/26/2008, -0/+10This looks really nice. The only part I question is, this is aimed at mobile devices, most of which seem to be using ARM processors but this project is concentrating on the x86 platform.
- FatherG, on 02/26/2008, -2/+11So you're saying they can get linux running on a ***** furby but not a DS?
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8It's made for a new Intel platform, Mobile Internet Device.
Not sure who the vendors are, but the money I was going to spend on an Air is going towards one of these. - inactive, on 02/26/2008, -5/+13I can say goodbye to XP on my eee pc. Finally
- se1zure, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8I agree, although I have to say it looks like android is going to end up in a much better position...
- lovekudu, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Google it, you lazy sod.
- robotosaurus, on 02/26/2008, -1/+9Full Internets? YAY
- Sairgem, on 02/26/2008, -0/+8Where have you been the last two years?
- TheRealToma, on 02/26/2008, -1/+8From what I remember, the mobile project didnt actually build anything for ARMEL devices, so nokia 770, n800 and n810 users are left in the dark here.
- awhiteflame, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7There's a difference between a linux kernel, and a desktop environment.
- zmigliozzi, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7That is slick. If I only had a MID.
- dspirito, on 02/26/2008, -8/+15Google andriod should rock this!
- r3zonance, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Only if you can give it an extra 192MB RAM and nearly 2GB more storage space. And probably more CPU horsepower.
- justice7, on 02/26/2008, -0/+7Does anyone have a list of hardware this currently works on?
- kwick, on 02/26/2008, -2/+9It would be cool to see this running on an iPhone.
- muniak, on 02/26/2008, -1/+7Packages not distro downloads.
- sajnikanth, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8Super. Waiting for the day when a mobile phone's OS could be manipulated easily. Imagine having a phone that could boot Android, Symbian and Ubuntu
- biggyfred, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6The big picture... according to you. The mobile platform is the future of the user experience in every measurable way. Our kids will have a good old laugh at the thought of our mobile technology world, just as I laughed every time someone brought up the Apple IIc in reference to the desktop world. If anything, the big picture *is* the mobile platform. Everything else is a side project.
And seriously dude, if you can't use Ubuntu or find its usability and compatibility problematic to the point of being unable to run with it, you aren't the kind of user Ubuntu support (you remember them, the ones that do it for free, right?) wants or needs. - biggyfred, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6I think they're planning for the future moreso than the present.
And whoever dugg you down is an idiot. - r3zonance, on 02/26/2008, -2/+8The DS doesn't have enough RAM, so that's out of the question.
- Stonekeeper, on 02/26/2008, -0/+6There's a really interesting tutorial on converting an application to work on this platform:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UMEGuide/Applica ...
Seems like they've really worked hard on this platform and not just thrown a lightweight UI at the standard distribution. - Rsearle, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6Anyone know if something like this could be installed on a DS? I am aware of LinuxDS but this version of Ubuntu would look great.
- synyster, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6it might be, since ubuntu is relatively easy to use compared with any other distros.
here is some graphs. http://www.google.com/trends?q=fedora%2Cubuntu%2Cd ... - cawpin, on 02/26/2008, -1/+6There are multiple skies?
- TacticalPenguin, on 02/26/2008, -0/+5This isn't exactly designed with the eee in mind. I think eeeXubuntu or an nLited XP install with some tweaks fits the eee best.
- brettalton, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Try the alternate intstall CD. It's much less taxing on your system as it simply gives you the installer and nothing more. Give that a shot on your Sony VIAO.
http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/
I've been installing Ubuntu on people's machines for over 2 years now, and I'm pretty sure a P3 can handle Ubuntu. Older Semprons and Celerons can even handle Ubuntu. At an absolute minimum, you should have 256 MB of RAM, but if it is too slow for you, try Xubuntu or gOS or whatever else you'd like =) - kenelbow, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4[citation needed]
- inactive, on 02/26/2008, -3/+7I'd love to see this on the DS.
- l800LEMMINGS, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4can someone make this work for devices people have like iphones and psp's ... maybe psp's cause they need it more
- 000dom000, on 02/26/2008, -2/+6this is a reply
- TnTBass, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4Sounds like a bad case of Linux envy.
- daradib, on 02/26/2008, -0/+4https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileAndEmbedded
- FoxOrian, on 02/26/2008, -1/+5It's a good looking os, too. For the people who care about the look and feel of their devices, ubuntu mobile should open more people up to the possibilities of linux.
