So, I would think we'll see it in the beta on Oct 6th - mickstephenson, on 09/19/2008, -1/+238.10 its significant because it is the year 2008 and the month, october.
8.1 would be january 2008 - cawpin, on 09/19/2008, -1/+18Ballsy. Stupid, but ballsy.
- Skaidon, on 09/19/2008, -1/+17It has to be said that by the sixth alpha I was expecting to see something of the snazzy new theme we have been promised -_-.
- seventhc, on 09/19/2008, -1/+16It's alpha, I wouldn't consider it an upgrade until it goes final.
You shouldn't use alpha software unless you understand that it might not work properly and might break stuff.
From the Ubuntu site:
This is still an alpha release. Do not install it on production machines. The final stable version will be released on October 30th, 2008.

Theme still unchanged.. - AdmiralAcbar, on 09/19/2008, -2/+13I have to say I love the name. Intrepid Ibex. It just has such an awesome ring to it.
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11"Last successful boot" recovery entry
On each successful boot, Intrepid will retain a copy of your running kernel and make it available from the boot loader as a "Last successful boot" option. This makes it possible for old kernel packages to be safely auto-removed by the package manager, instead of being kept indefinitely.
DKMS
DKMS is included in Alpha 6, allowing kernel drivers to be automatically rebuilt when new kernels are released. This makes it possible for kernel package updates to be made available immediately without waiting for rebuilds of driver packages, and without third-party driver packages becoming out of date when installing these kernel updates.
This opens a huge door for third party software to get onboard.. - MrDiggBury, on 09/19/2008, -0/+11How's the new theme getting along? Anyone have a screenshot as to where they are with that? If they can make Ubuntu beautiful right out of the box, then it will go a long way to encouraging Linux migration.
- kuehlschrank, on 09/19/2008, -1/+11@mickstephenson: January 2008 would be 8.01 - or why is the latest stable version 8.04, not 8.4? But I agree, 8.10 is the correct notation.
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -6/+14I have Intrepid Alpha 6 running on one server and all looks well. I am going to wait for the full release before I put Ibex on the others.
- kragil, on 09/19/2008, -1/+9After nearly 7 years!!
The most annoying Gnome/GTK bug has been fixed!! Taadaa!
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=56070
Qt, isn't it? ;) - evilregis, on 09/19/2008, -0/+8Not a production server, I hope.
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Like the Dodge Intrepid?
I swear if I had a Dodge Intrepid, I would write in "Ibex" right after the name in magic marker. - mickstephenson, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Usually a sign of a brain tumor, you should get that checked out.
- TehDoctor, on 09/19/2008, -0/+7Some balls are held for charity; some for fancy dress,
But when they're held for pleasure, they're the balls that I like best. - agentlame, on 09/20/2008, -0/+7With any luck, it will be Dust, or Dust based:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/ ... - inactive, on 09/19/2008, -1/+7You're so full of *****. Certainly beauty is on the eye of the beholder but that doesn't mean that you can't make a theme that is appealing to the majority of people, something that you present to a potential new user and impressed him, I know that is possible 'cause all my friends are impressed by the look of my Linux desktop.
Don't underestimate how the graphical interface impacts a user perception of an OS. For his earlier remarks I know Mark knows this I'm just hoping for him to take action on it. - directrix13, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6You have balls; I like balls.
- powatom, on 09/19/2008, -0/+6Bury it then. Some people are interested.
- inactive, on 09/19/2008, -4/+10Imagine George Bush trying to pronounce Ubuntu.
- XGremlinX, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5Found that bug myself some years ago, but after a while I thought it was intended. Remember the Windows "next next next" and then you press Finish without realizing someone stupid enough left a "restart now" ticked in the dialog?
In gnome with that 'bug' you can't click a button that appeared under your mouse without you actually pointing away from the button and then on it again.
So hey! It's not a bug, it's a feature. - mickstephenson, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5No one knows, the community artwork team don't have any say in default themes, and there is no say whether Mark will choose any of the ones the team is working on. He could have hired a design company to make one and no one would know until it came out. There are some nice themes the community is working on, but there is every chance they will be ignored and it will just like hardy.
- heavyal, on 09/19/2008, -0/+5I'm sure I'll get buried for this, but I don't see anything in this release that is absolutely cutting edge or that the average user just 'has to have'. If you look at the blueprints (https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid) most of the changes are under the hood or don't have anything to do with what an 'average' user works with day-to-day; for instance, the top three 'essential' items are distributed-development-importer, ubuntu-server-landscape, and ubuntu-vm-builder. What on earth use are those to the group of people that Ubuntu is supposed to be (in theory, the common person who either knows nothing about Linux or has been trained on Windows) targeting? Shouldn't there be a tighter focus on applications and useability? Serious question here.
- Reclaim3r, on 09/19/2008, -1/+5I read the title as "Alex Trebek" for some reason...
- LostOverThere, on 09/20/2008, -0/+4I can almost guarantee it will be Dust. I regularly post on the Ubuntu Artwork Mailing list and at the moment, it really looks like Dust will be it. :)
That is if Canonical "let it in" - tylerjwilk, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4try checking that the virtual box generic modules packages in apt matches your kernel number
- marybaboo, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Get your countdown to Intrepid Ibex here: http://doiop.com/Ibex-Countdown
- aliendisaster, on 09/19/2008, -0/+4Does anyone else think the name reminds them of a car?
- watcht, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Anyone who's used it or installed it: How's the bootspeed, and 3d rendering on an intel card?
- mickstephenson, on 09/19/2008, -1/+4http://web.promethix.com/mick/Screenshot.png I took this one the other day note this isn't the actual theme, but it shows some awesome additions to network manager
- John6000, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3Spore on Ubuntu?
- talkingwires, on 09/19/2008, -0/+3http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item ...
Though you could just boot up Ubuntu 8.04, and you'll see what 8.10 looks like in its current state. Canonical says they've got an internal team working on a new theme, but the deadline for the final artwork is in six days and the community hasn't even glimpsed said theme. - nickert0n, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2So they decided to ditch the diarrhea donkey theme they had going on?
- alphaterminus, on 09/19/2008, -2/+4I LOLd
- Handonam, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2buried for being an ass
- ArthurSucks, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2sudo apt-get install blender -y
- wrek, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Hell I know that, I just wanted to try it. It's on a test machine and I wanted people to know it wasn't compatible with the current virtualbox. The install I'm referring to is nothing but a core/base install with no software added other than the guest software for virtualhost. You think I'd put alpha on a production box? C'mon...
- Zaarin, on 09/22/2008, -0/+2It is very nice. I've never believed I would use a dark theme on my primary workstation, but I would be happy to see a Dust or Dust derivative included in Intrepid.
- powatom, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2Maybe that's what he has in mind, actually. He recenty stated he wanted to help fund designers make Linux applications look good - so whether this extents to the Ubuntu theme remains to be seen, but it sees like the logical conclusion.
- MicrosoftBob, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2Or anything polysyllabic.
- Skaidon, on 09/19/2008, -0/+2That's good to hear. Thanks for being this digg's Morgan Freeman :D
- pizpot, on 09/20/2008, -0/+2While I play Warcraft3 on wine, I didn't even try with Spore as the graphics are much tougher to run.
- pizpot, on 09/21/2008, -0/+2ok, I tried spore in wine, it works way pretty quick too.
- MicrosoftBob, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1Sphincter.
- the7thmagus, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1yep, its working with Wine 1.15 pretty well now. hoozah
- heavyal, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Not sure if this is what you're looking for but the II blueprints have someone working on "Boot Support for Degraded RAID" .. it's marked as low priority but it also says 'started' so that will probably be in there.
- acirilo, on 09/20/2008, -0/+1About 24 minutes remaining....Fetching file 714 of 1468 at 404kB/s.... we'll see
- jerrolds, on 09/19/2008, -0/+1Any reason why i would use the new EncryptedPrivateDirectory over Truecrypt for my "secret gifts for loved ones"? One thing i hate about TC is that you have to create some sort of fixed sized partition before using it...or can file containers grow if needed?
