- Vadi0, on 09/05/2008, -0/+6Welcome to Intrepid Ibex Alpha-5, which will in time become Ubuntu 8.10.
Pre-releases of Intrepid are *not* encouraged for anyone needing a stable
system or anyone who is not comfortable running into occasional, even
frequent breakage. They are, however, recommended for Ubuntu developers and
those who want to help in testing, reporting, and fixing bugs.
Hand-picked highlights from the announcement:
-- Nautilus file manager has tab support and Eject icons for removable drives in Places sidebar.
-- X.Org 7.4, the latest stable version of X.Org, is available in Intrepid. This release brings much better support for hot-pluggable input devices such as tablets, keyboards, and mice.
-- Guest session. This creates a temporary password-less user account with restricted privileges: the account cannot access any users' home directories, nor permanently store data. This is sufficiently safe to lend your laptop to someone else for a quick email check, or to use it as a surf station for guests in your house.
-- On each successful boot, Intrepid will retain a copy of your running kernel and make it available from the boot loader as a "Last successful boot" option. This makes it possible for old kernel packages to be safely auto-removed by the package manager, instead of being kept indefinitely. (so don't laugh at it finally catching up with windows! It's for a diff purpose!)
Stuff hand-picked available from previous alphas announcements:
-- Managing 3G connections (GSM/CDMA.)
There's a lot of small changes that were done in programs also that don't get mentioned... need to go through Gnome changelogs for that. - bmorency, on 09/06/2008, -0/+4Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex alpha 5 was also released if anyone is interested.

- TheWindBlows, on 09/06/2008, -0/+3Last successful boot is not really even an improvement since you could already do something 9X% similar already only benefit for that is to the package manager reducing the amount of space kernels take up.
Though the other improvements are great. - Stemp, on 09/06/2008, -0/+2Xubuntu :
