- chris9902, on 11/04/2007, -0/+30What did they actually do? It's just Ubuntu with a green theme and bunch of bookmarks pre-set.
Taking credit for that seems really lame. - joepaterno, on 11/04/2007, -2/+23So this PC has a bookmark set to google apps and this author finds that to be an "absolutely brilliant idea"? After reading that I laughed so hard I forgot to read the interview.
- T440, on 11/14/2007, -3/+20Wal-Mart Customer Review snippet:
"This computer doesn't have the power to run Windows XP!!!" - nobogeys217, on 11/04/2007, -1/+11So, what if your internet is down. Your screwed. My internet provider has been sucking it up lately. My neighbors moved out the other day, and MY internet service was disconnected also, and my tv is fuzzy. I would switch but my only two other options are AT&T or Comcast. I think I'll just suck it up.
But really, gOS looks and sounds great, but if your internet service is down, you cant really do anything. - wilf_brim, on 11/05/2007, -1/+10I just don't get who this computer is aimed at. Low end users aren't going to like it, because they can't do anything else with it. (at least not easily). My real problem with it is very limited offline capability, and face it: losing connectivity (for most of us) isn't that unusual an event. High end users aren't going to be happy with the OS limitations and the weak hardware. I just don't see this as being appealing enough to sell.
- stupergenius, on 11/04/2007, -1/+10We prefer to be called Sheeple.
- MattBD, on 11/07/2007, -4/+12I quite like the look of that - I like the favourite applications along the bottom. It makes sense having the web apps that people use most on the desktop.
When I heard that WalMart had decided to use this instead of Ubuntu, I was a bit sceptical, but now I see the appeal.
It seems like on both sides of the Atlantic, Linux is starting to appear in supermarkets - check out my submission from a few weeks ago - http://digg.com/linux_unix/Tesco_Every_little_help ... - Ouze, on 11/04/2007, -0/+8GENIUS, as the article says!
- freehunter, on 11/04/2007, -1/+9Why would you call them sheep? Where else can I go in this town to buy everything I need in one store? I would be happy to buy from a farmer's market, if they had fruits and veggies from any place other than where I live, which means I could grow it myself. Where else can I buy the latest video game and DVD releases? I don't have a gamestop, the nearest mall is over 50 miles away. Where else can I buy everything I need in one stop, and get a discount on gas for having bought there? Yes, it might wreck the economy, but if that is the case, maybe the economy needed to be wrecked.

- Daniel591992, on 11/07/2007, -0/+6I had to teach my Portuguese speaking aunt how to use an English Vista laptop, and by far, the easiest way to do this was by using Google Apps. I set up an iGoogle page, included links to Docs and Spreadsheets, Gmail, Picasa, Calendar, and more on the desktop. The best part of these apps is the ease of use. For example, she doesn't know how to download a picture, however, she can see the photo in Gmail. Also, sending pictures is really easy with Picasa. All you have to do is click on the photos, hit email (no need to find the my pictures folder), type the person's name (it logs you in automatically), then click send. Small things like that make all the difference. The best part? Everything is translated!
- shankarganesh, on 11/04/2007, -0/+6just icons linking to web services in an OS doesn't make sense to me. does it?
- ChileanGoD, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Is there a video with this thing in action?
- tmanstark, on 11/07/2007, -1/+6>>This is awesome news... I've been saying that Google is going to take over the world for like the last four years.
So when is it awesome news that one company will take over the world? Exactly none of one of anything should have too much concentration of power. The world is about balance not manufactured imbalance. Google treats its employees well. That is truly great. They are spreading themselves thin so all they do becomes mediocre? That's the repeated mistake of history since Rome. - freehunter, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5Gaming, multimedia applications, etc. Work = functionality, fun = everything else.
- Ouze, on 11/04/2007, -0/+5and, again - GENIUS, as the article says!
- sarge96, on 11/05/2007, -1/+6Great, If Wal-Mart wasn't inherently evil.
- Matt2k, on 11/04/2007, -1/+6Walmart is OK for many budget items. Since Walmart came to town, many of the local grocers have focused on premium products, so they each serve a role to me. Like if I want to pick up some flatbread and fresh hummus and some quality steaks, I don't even bother checking walmart. But if I need the basics, it makes sense to go there.
The only problem with the local grocers is they don't push the volume to keep fresh produce on the shelf, so you have to be really careful buying things like vegetables and breads. Everything else in between is easily mail ordered or picked up from a place slightly more upscale place like Target or Meijer. - inactive, on 11/05/2007, -0/+4This is a very interesting development and shows a peek into the future. However, in reality, this isn't a very functional computer for anyone who is more advanced than checking their email. I do think it's a great idea and a move in the right direction though. Thanks for the interview and the heads up!
- estaticd, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4It's been down a little bit due to the rush of traffic, but you can still download the torrent on http://www.linuxtracker.org/
- daftman, on 11/04/2007, -0/+4Alot of simple things are lame and obvious after people did it. I don;t think this is lame as this has a potential to work with ISP who sell internet connection along with the device. It's cheaper than an iPhone yet has more FUNCTIONALITY that most low income people might need from a computer.
- 0KonTroL0, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3Torrent link here:
http://linuxtracker.org/torrents-details.php?id=48 ... - Myztry, on 11/04/2007, -0/+3Okay. Australian vernacular.
punter = consumer
blackbox=self contained device (like a VCR, or such)
And the Credit Card reference is for 'Authentication' with continuing ability to charge.
Really it's not that complicated, or confusing. Though I didn't apply the KISS principle for you... Sorry :) - Pie4Weebl, on 11/04/2007, -3/+6as much as I am quite content with my XP box, if I needed a computer for pure functionality and nothing more that looks like a great option.
- Myztry, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2This is great. It provides commercial choice for the punters. Otherwise it would just be a matter of time before the Windows Key field was replaced by a Credit Card field. And you don't need to fork out the excess cash for 2Gig of RAM just to get a decently performing system.
Let alone hundreds of dollars just so the average consumer can write a few letters per year. It's hardly about to replace my Ubuntu Box but for an underestimated percentage of the population it's just sweet. Affordable 'black box' functionality. - milliamp, on 11/06/2007, -1/+3There is nothing wrong with leveraging Wal-Mart to fight Microsoft.
- KIERANMULLEN, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2Could have loaded openoffice.org on it. Do you think people that are going to buy a $199 computer at walmart can afford $50 a month full time broadband connections? Or will they simply tie up their phone line dialed in all the time while they are typing?
Nice idea & effort but fail
Perhaps there is a lite version of openoffice that could run with less horsepower? - Matt2k, on 11/04/2007, -0/+2I think the term is "turn key" not "black box", but yeah. I guess
- erov, on 11/04/2007, -1/+3Uses ubuntu repos and "cat /etc/*-release" returns "Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy" from someone "venting" over the OS earlier with a few exceptions to a appropriately named "painful" server. Hey I borrowed all I just said too :).
- earlycj5, on 11/05/2007, -2/+4What is a computer for if not functionality? Looks? I hope that's not why you're using XP.
- MattBD, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1Well, Linux Mint is basically just Ubuntu with different artwork and a few extras preinstalled (mainly plugins such as Flash, Java and MP3 support), and that's doing quite well.
- MattBD, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1Could use the kind of thing they have on Xubuntu - AbiWord for word processing. Can't remember what else it uses - suffice to say they tend towards the more lightweight applications.
- luxette, on 11/05/2007, -0/+1The biggest issue I see is what happens when the gOS buyers want to install new software onto this thing. Lots of pissed-off calls to tech support when they realize that the game they bought for their kid isn't going to run on it.
- makario, on 09/03/2009, -0/+1I think OpenOffice is on it, actually.
- Ouze, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1I have no idea at all what you are talking about in them first two sentences, there. "Punter"? "Otherwise it would just be a matter of time before the Windows Key field was replaced by a Credit Card field" "Affordable 'black box' functionality."
WTF? Normally I'd ignore such and move on but I feel like there was a good, poorly articulated comment in among the confusion and incorrectly applied buzzwords. Something about how it's a good cheap system for grandma to write email? - Myztry, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1As you will. 'turn key' suggests something lockable so I've never liked the term. But then a 'black box' is something all the Italian guys lust after. LOL
- mabhatter, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1the DE is enlightenment 17 which doesn't come with Ubuntu. That's a bit of work. See the post at OSNews for better info.
- ChileanGoD, on 11/04/2007, -0/+1Maybe he meant "cheap"
- guatescout, on 11/16/2007, -0/+0This computer isn't meant to be a "powerhouse" of a machine. Not to mention this is a full functioning form of Ubuntu, it's just set up for those who aren't familiar with Linux. And look at it like this... at least they aren't buying Windows Vista!
- sergioalcides, on 11/04/2007, -0/+0Openoffice is bundled. version 2.3
- daftman, on 11/04/2007, -2/+1What if the ISP bundle with their internet plan? There could be some potential things for this. Most phone are pretty useless without a carrier. I suspect this can be categorize in the same product category?
- HonoredMule, on 11/04/2007, -4/+2This may get confusing...everytime I hear or say "gOS" (pronounced gee-oss) I or someone around me says or thinks "What, GEOS for c64?"
- joepaterno, on 11/06/2007, -5/+3But they solve all of that with the brilliant idea of bookmarking to Google. Didn't you read?
- StillConfused, on 11/04/2007, -3/+0dd
- fradro, on 11/04/2007, -5/+1whats the point? If you want an easy to use linux OS just get ubuntu..
gOS looks like crap - scantling, on 11/04/2007, -5/+0i don't like being tied to the internet for the availability of my apps
but, for the money is a deal for the average joe
and i make money teaching them how to use it - StillConfused, on 11/04/2007, -5/+0dd
- sarge96, on 11/04/2007, -9/+3Lets see... ***** hardware, OS that doesn't work w/o internet, and a processor that I've never even heard of. Sounds like Wal Mart to me.
- berkough, on 11/04/2007, -13/+4This is awesome news... I've been saying that Google is going to take over the world for like the last four years. Only problem is that the official website for the distro isn't working!?!? Err...
http://www.thinkgos.com - inactive, on 11/11/2007, -15/+4I hear gOS also greatly reduces the confusion of all the programs consumers can use on a Windows box as they can only run about 15-20 total apps on their new OS. So much easier!
