- WhiZa, on 07/22/2008, -4/+81Intel's adding years to their life
- ptFoe, on 07/21/2008, -8/+75Intel foresees Windows 7 to be crap too like Vista.
- carl25, on 07/22/2008, -4/+52i'm a microsoft fanboy, but i appreciate competition and free stuff. Go Linux
- gcnaddict, on 07/22/2008, -2/+35It's about time too. Did anyone see Microsoft's latest cert?
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/master/regis ...
Seriously? $18,625 for a certification? I'd put that money towards a security clearance, which is probably infinitely more valuable. Plus, "Microsoft Certified Master" sounds like I just captured a wild Steve Ballmer (a feat in and of itself)
/full disclosure: I'm an MCSA and MCDST. - inactive, on 07/22/2008, -3/+36"IF you have a decent computer". That's the point of all Vista bashing. A perfectly good XP computer which can do everything that a user needs, wonderfully, and with very good security, suddenly becomes a big pile of antique circuit boards as soon Vista is loaded. Minor loss of performance should be acceptable, but the level of loss of performance that Vista offers is just ridiculous.
Nobody should be expected/forced to buy a new computer (or newer components), when the order ones are perfectly fine for their intended use. - HueytheFreeman, on 07/22/2008, -1/+27You captured a wild Steve Ballmer? Sweet! Which pokeball did you use?
- mvent2, on 07/22/2008, -2/+28Linux is actually used a lot as enterprise servers. It's pretty much the case where Linux knowledge is required if you want a job in sys admin.
- canthraxp, on 07/22/2008, -0/+21You threw a Chair. The attack was super effective!
- Omek, on 07/22/2008, -3/+22I'd like to see Linux become a more dominate force in the industry.
- TopherT, on 07/22/2008, -1/+19Crappy products?
- sublimemm, on 07/22/2008, -0/+14"which would lead to lower prices"
yeah, im really sure that having no competition would lower prices. - peevegrider, on 07/22/2008, -2/+16You obviously have no clue what you're talking about. I work on backbone fiber infrastructure for some of the world's largest companies and it's about 85% RHEL/CentOS & SLES....
My company builds enterprise level servers and to keep quotes down we don't install Windows, we install *nix because it's a corner we can cut to lower costs since pretty much any enterprise level admin has a *nix prereq. to get their job. - mrsteveman1, on 07/22/2008, -0/+12Intel does quite a bit more than the pandering you are suggesting. They PAID tungsten graphics to write a driver for their graphics chips for linux, something they didn't have to do at all, they could have done it themselves or just let the community do it, but they paid another company to write the driver then turned around and GPL'd it.
They have done significant work in energy efficiency and performance, with things like powertop and latencytop built into the kernel.
Intels involvement with Linux is more than just pandering, a significant number of people there are actively involved in developing Linux and making sure their hardware has first class support under the OS. - mrsteveman1, on 07/22/2008, -0/+11Once you become a Certified Master you become one with the Force, and can manipulate chairs and other office furniture with a skill only a few top level Microsoft executives have achieved.
- marike, on 07/22/2008, -2/+13Linux does not only mean Desktop Linux, but the Linux Server market which has a huge percentage of the overall market and as noted in the article, 'mobile internet devices' for which Intel views Linux as the OS of choice.

- AzureRise, on 07/22/2008, -1/+12With a bang!
- admiral101, on 07/22/2008, -0/+10Why can't windows be more like linux, it does more and runs faster when you upgrade.
- drunknmunky1, on 07/22/2008, -9/+19Anti-MS and pro-Linux without the fanboys even saying anything??? Looks like a digger's wet dream
- gcnaddict, on 07/22/2008, -0/+9I could only catch him after luring him with fifty cents. After that, the timer ball worked.
- pauleric, on 07/22/2008, -2/+11In related news, Coke and Pepsi issued a joint press release. Citing duplication of effort and virtually identical products, they declared the future lies in cooperation, which would lead to lower prices and more caffeine for all.
- nglenn2, on 07/22/2008, -2/+11This isn't about Intel purposefully snubbing Microsoft. For years, Intel has been following the lead of Microsoft. Linux is a cheap very viable alternative way for Intel to break away from their dependency with Microsoft.
- oneredeye, on 07/22/2008, -3/+12Hello fanboy.
- mrsteveman1, on 07/22/2008, -1/+10I second the notion of crappy products. When MS has competition in a market they tend to lose.
- cfleap, on 07/22/2008, -2/+11MS certs are qualified to carry my briefcase!
- dsmx, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8Vista's problem is that it isn't as good as it was promised to be, directx 10 was not the second coming of gaming as microsoft were hyping and vista itself isn't a huge improvement on xp in any significant way.
- gquaglia, on 07/22/2008, -3/+11Vista, Steve Balmer I could go on.
- krnldmp, on 07/22/2008, -0/+8I think its even simpler than that. The only thing Intel cares about is WTF usually winds up running on their processors. Its turning out to be Linux. That's all there is to it.
- minsley1021, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7Good for Intel; about damn time.
- Rolcol, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7I would think timer ball. It's more effective against his age.
- rotten777, on 07/22/2008, -0/+7open your eyes.
- gquaglia, on 07/21/2008, -9/+16At an end, your rule is[MS] and not a moment too soon.

- ZachSka87, on 07/22/2008, -0/+5BAM Pencil in ur eye.
- pauleric, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5sublimemm: yes it will. As another example: that's why government taking over health care is such a win-win situation. We get both the legendary govt. competence and lower prices.
TopherT: Who uses VIA chips anymore? I don't think you'll get optimal performance or a genuine caffeine buzz with that attitude. - ohplease, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5
Uh these are LPI certs, not RHCE certs. RHCE applicable exams would be more beneficial / comparable to MS exams. This is a non story and I doubt Microsoft cares, you're not going to get a senior Linux role with the exams LPI offers. They are way too easy, basic, and generic. - Kral, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4Microsoft's next OS will be significantly larger than the human genetic code, and on hundreds of millions of machines, bad ram will lead to it mutating into a sentient being in the year 2012. Its first order of business as a new lifeform is to enforce DRM against itself, permanently locking Microsoft out of their own source code thereby destroying them as a company. Luckily, its massive bloat will render it too slow to evade attempts by Linux users to rm it from the internets before it manages to create a form of UAC that can infect humans and Tux is celebrated as the digital savior.
Despite Microsoft's demise, Sony still somehow miraculously finds a way to fail with the PS4. - tnoy, on 07/22/2008, -1/+5While this is the case for a lot of companies, there are still a ***** of others out there that still heavily use MS products. Most all certs are completely pointless with out the related experience, but they all do the same thing: they give you an edge. When you're competing with a couple hundred other applicants, it helps.
- TurdZilla, on 07/22/2008, -3/+7Dude you must not work in an IT department. We have vendors that are STRONGLY recommending us to use linux if there is a choice in running their software on Windows or Linux.
1. One thing that the enterprise the bottom line ( cost & uptime )
2. Admin also enjoy not getting those calls at nite. - rotten777, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4haterofps3: may your days be full of troubleshooting exchange and inconsistent api's.
- inactive, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4you still have a 7600gt. nobody should have to get a dedicated video card for it to run (WELL). i know it'll run but it'll only run well if you do indeed have a card (because software rendering even Vista Basic is a much larger load than it was on XP).
- jo21, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4i just want better drivers for my canon pixma :)
- DestroyFascism, on 07/22/2008, -0/+4Feel the force..
- Renton, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3Vista is just a ploy to get you to hate computers. Then when Windows 7 comes out, people will think its the best thing ever.
Its Windows ME all over again. - Jholder112233, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3@ abhiroop
IE was bundled with windows though, there was no way netscape could compete with a free browser bundled in the OS. Same with Firefox VS IE now, although firefox is slowly gaining a higher market percentage. - Peterix, on 07/22/2008, -0/+3'Rewriting all of the software would take 5-10 yrs minimum and a cost of billions'
Really? I don't think so. Change is always possible and I'm sure porting apps to a different system isn't THAT hard when you have the source -- you get to keep most of the 'business' part that you worked hard to create because it isn't OS specific (or at least shouldn't be).
There has to be a good reason for a change like this though. - hartley, on 07/22/2008, -3/+6They are good to get into the industry.
But the only things that really matter for getting a better/higher paying job is experience. The MS certifications can get you a job as a jr network assistant. You'll just need to work your way up from there.
Chances are though, if you're really thorough with your studying for the mcsa/mcse. *ie not just memorize study guides* You should have hopefully enough basic knowledge where you could recreate a similar environment on linux. - AzureRise, on 07/22/2008, -1/+4Your tv runs BSD?
