- diggapleaze, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22considering the name of the package the tutorial shows how to install is called "VirtualBox_1.3.8_Ubuntu_feisty_i386.deb" I think it's OK to say that the tutorial is for Ubuntu and not Linux in general.
A big pet peeve of mine though is that this tutorial (and countless others exactly like it) never explicitly say that you are installing the closed source version of VirtualBox. If you want the free and open source version, you'll have to install from source code, via the directions here http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux%20build%20instructions straight from the VirtualBox site.
Don't like that they aren't offering a FOSS .deb package? Write to VirtualBox at info@innotek.de .
I'm not sure what their reasons are for not offering a FOSS package, it may or may not be a legitimate reason. But Ubuntu's going to offer a package in multiverse eventually, so it's going to happen anyway. - bobdobolena, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12OR,
Step 1= Install Ubuntu, OOffice and other stuff you need.
Step 2= Turn windows CD upside down, Use as coaster.
Step 3= If multiple CD's or PC's in your house...rinse, lather repeat.
I'll probably get buried, but seriously if you want to run linux....run it... if you can't find an application use google or digg and search for something that can replace said application. I've been running linux for 4+ years without windows and it keeps getting better every year.
Oh? You want to play games? Get a Wii!
*ducks and hides* - Mejogid, on 11/11/2007, -0/+10"What's up with people saying Automatix breaks systems?"
How about the fact that it does? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats#head-8fa840b0f29ed7a927231cb640610777ca2d9904 - official Ubuntu documentation. - Tyr7BE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Ok. "Ubuntu Feisty Fawn Distribution containing Linux Kernel and GNU toolset as a baseline, based off of Debian, with some custom components".
Now I want you to type that out every time you even THINK of mentioning Ubuntu. - Mejogid, on 11/11/2007, -1/+8Except automatix means running operations as root which you don't understand - which could have negative effects for any number of reasons - and has a fair chance of breaking your system on an upgrade. You'll probably have difficulty upgrading the packages themselves aswell. If you have the patience, it's better just to follow a 20 minute tutorial.
(Don't get me wrong, Automatix is great to introduce new users to Linux, but it can cause breakage and issues that get unfairly attributed to the distro). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12or i could just install windows.
- cactus476, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8"Very long, descriptive, and detailed (unlike the usual blogspam that has taken over Digg)"
This isn't blogspam, the author of the blog created that tutorial.
And the author didn't say "linux" because he didn't install Virtualbox on "linux", he installed it on "Ubuntu Feisty Fawn". - Neiby, on 11/11/2007, -1/+61. Install PCLinuxOS
2. Install VirtualBox from the repository
3. Configure VirtualBox
4. Install Windows
There you go. - InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's probably something specific to your computer, but I can't say anymore without knowing specifics. If you can find out where it freezes and then google that, it might help you get it fixed. Otherwise, I'd ask on the Ubuntu Forums. Cheers Mate.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Run VMWare's converter on the original windows partition. This will allow you to create a VMWare image of the partition and put this image someone (network location, etc...). Then you can run the image in VMWare.
http://www.vmware.com/products/converter/ - Gerz1219, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Oh come on, if Linux is to make any inroads on the desktop, support for regular users is going to have to coalesce around one distro, and Ubuntu is the best positioned for that. In the public's mind, Ubuntu is going to become synonymous with Linux, so get used to it. The type of user who needs detailed screenshots and step-by-step instructions to install anything is only going to use Ubuntu anyway.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@specialk16
You were asking for it :P http://thepiratebay.org/tor/3668778/Cedega_6.0___everything - Mejogid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It works with vmware workstation - pricey or illegal - http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/linux/rawdevices_linux.html and you may be able to hack around with virtualbox, although I doubt it'll be very reliable.
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@insanemachine: Actually Ubuntu has a Migration Assitant in the installer, so you can bring all your bookmarks and some windows settings (like wallpaper and such) automatically to your new ubuntu box.
Seriously, I'm getting so used to Linux. I keep finding reasons why not to use Linux (i.e finding a cedega torrent). - jetpig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i've got linux and xp dual booting as well. linux is used for everything but games. and when windows is running that clean it's a 30 second bootup. and as kubuntu shuts down in 30 seconds it's a one minute process to get into games. i'm not THAT anxious to get owned at CS that i need to launch it IMMEDIATELY.
- gldfshnpcklejar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Is it possible to run a VM of a different OS you have dually installed on your computer? Like I have Windows XP and Ubuntu installed, can I run the Windows through a VW in Ubuntu?
- smock9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm looking for an emulator that will boot an installation of windows that is already installed on the Hard Drive.
I currently have a work-issued laptop with windows and I'd like to set it up so that I normally boot into Ubuntu but when I need to, I can start up an emulator that will boot the windows partition that the IT people installed onto the laptop before issuing it to me.
My guess is that this will be difficult since these types of emulators usually expose virtual hardware that is different from the hardware that was exposed when the Windows OS was originally installed.
Any suggestions? - geoken, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Sometimes tutorials are a bad thing. When you make a tutorial for installing something so simple that your tutorial is essentially a series of screenshots with captions that are less informative than the text within the screenshots, it isn't a good thing.
Creating a tutorial suggests some degree of difficulty. When there is a tutorial for everything people naturally assume that everything is hard to do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4does anyone know the efficiency of this emulator?
i tried qemu before but it was extremely slow (I have 2.6 ghz dualcore processor) - specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Is it possible to run a VM of a different OS you have dually installed on your computer? Like I have Windows XP and Ubuntu installed, can I run the Windows through a VW in Ubuntu?"
Yeah, you'll have to google it. AFAIK, you can create different hardware profiles under Windows XP, so you can boot from the VM and from the real PC. Otherwise, XP will bluescreen if you try to boot it under the VM. And you'll need Vmware, virutalbox can't use psychical disks/partitions. - PRocker267, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6why the hell would you want to do that?
- PsychTouch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yeah it would be nice
- smock9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can't say it can't be done. Maybe what I want is not called a virtualizers then. But I know previous versions of VMWare could do this but it can be pretty expensive.
- geoken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not saying tutorials aren't neccessary sometimes, but this guy is doing a screen for screen recap of the installer, then adding captions which are less informative than the instructions within the installer.
I mean look at the actual screenshots and his captions. One of the steps has a caption "Enter a name for the virtual machine. I gave WinXP to show it’s Windows XP installation. Select the OS type you want to install. It’s Windows XP in my case. Click Next.". If you look at the pic of the actual installer this is the text it gives you "Enter a name for the new virtual machine and select the guest operating system you plan to install in the machine". The rest of the tutorial is no less redundant. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@gldfshnpcklejar: Try this link: http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_converter_windows_linux
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@PRO
I'm dualbooting Linux and Windows. Frankly because I had windows installed first, and most of my stuff was installed there. I keep most of my games on my windows partition, save for one or two I play a lot. The one thing that helped me out the most, was sharing my config files between Linux and Windows. Add a bookmark in one OS and have it appear in the other. If you google around a bit(sorry, but I lost the link) you should find out how to do it with step by step. - zmigliozzi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are you serious... This is an equivalent to a guide to an install wizard on windows...
- kevinlyfellow, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Some people need windows to compile windows apps or simply don't have alternatives. I almost took a statistics class where they required me to run a specific windows app. I dropped it promptly, but had I been able to spend 100 dollars in books and software at the time, I would have either booted into windows or kept windows where it belongs... inside a window running linux.
- specialK16, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@fatdog789:
You are half right. VmWare lets you use real physical disks in the virtual machine. This way, you can run your current XP install, but you have to make some configuration first (hardware profiles). - Mrcopter, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wine generally takes care of all my gaming needs, so Linux still wins.
- DAaaMan64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2VirtualBox is the most efficient of all I think. I am useing vmware server but only cause there is no 64bit virtualbox. However still nothing with 3d hardware support on linux, I want here to be... :(

- nuudles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It is very possible, while also being free using VMPlayer. I was able to follow these instructions:
http://oopsilon.com/Running-a-Windows-Partition-in-VMware
But since I have a laptop with an SATA drive, the numbers I got from parted didn't seem to work. To work around this, I was able to download VMWare Server (also free) and configure a vmdk file for my hard drive that works really well. I've been trying to get a VT-enabled VM working with my existing partition (Xen or Qemu), but have had no luck. You can see my problems I encountered here:
http://qemu-forum.ipi.fi/viewtopic.php?p=11022
that no one responded to, even with suggestions on how I can progress. - strabes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm installing windows on it right now and it appears to be quite fast. It seems to be slowing down the rest of my computer quite a bit, which is understandable.
- williebee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3PCLOS all the way, the best distro out there.
- grapfx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with you. Why would one need to install a virtual box on their Linux system to run windows? Do you also go to Taco Bell and have the cashier run across the street to the McDonald's to get you a big mac? Save some time and ram and load windows and play your games. The things you use in Linux, Firefox, T-Bird, OO, etc have windows versions. As for bragging rites, automatix will hook you up. I don't even have wine installed on my ubuntu box. I don't need it. If I want to game, I reboot and go to my windows drive. Yes I dual boot, the misses refuses to use Linux, she fears the penguin/too lazy to learn to single click.
On the other hand, has anyone noticed automatix now has pay software available, you install and you have to pay to keep it. I learned the hard way with Xandros way back when, if you have to pay for it in Linux, it usually doesn't work. - serpicolugnut, on 11/11/2007, -5/+5Here's an easier way:
1) Install automatix (http://getautomatix.com).
2) Select VirtualBox to be installed
3) Setup and configure VirtualBox
There's no step 4.
As for the efficiency, it's pretty darn good. I wasn't sure if they were using QEMU, but if they are, they've added their own optimizations. On an Athlon 3400+ w/ 2GB RAM (512MB dedicated to VB), it runs quite well. Office and Visual Studio perfom near native speeds. - rock4, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3here is nice guide for virtualbox http://www.ubuntugeek.com/create-and-manage-virtual-machines-using-virtualbox.html
- fatdog789, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It can't be done. Virtualizers can only run programs within the virtualization, not real OS installs.
- cactus476, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Sometime you have to.
I write technical handbooks and some people still don't get it even though there are a screenshots with the correct options selected and verbage that instructs the user on exactly what to do. - spaceman77, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have tried Parallels and VMware and Virtualbox is a speed demon compared to them.
I am dual booting windows and Ubuntu and my xp on virtual box w/Linux runs faster than my xp on its own hard drive.
I keep expecting bugs and freeze ups but for me it works fantastic (and it's free)
What's wrong with this picture?
Spaceman - shakajumbo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ubuntu is probably THE best software I've ever put on my computer. It's made me totally virus and trojan proof, and it plays WoW which is enough for me. Plus now I can still use MS Office running on this software windows program if I need.
Niiice !! - crossers, on 07/14/2008, -0/+0yes it's easy to use! and it's great!Ubuntu is grate software.
