- Vadi0, on 12/04/2008, -2/+87Looks like an inferior and a poorly thought out replacement for the current solution.
No thanks...
(the preferences dialog alone wants to make me belch) - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -2/+34Why would anybody want to use this?
- smacksaw, on 12/05/2008, -2/+23They decided they wanted the suck factor of KDE 4.x on Gnome for some reason.
- mazza558, on 12/04/2008, -1/+20It looks somewhat like Linux Mint because USP is what Linux Mint uses.
USP looks ugly by default - but, when customized, it's easily the best solution - you choose what you want.
I only wish there were several presets which could save people time customizing. - davidwasman, on 12/05/2008, -1/+17Look, I love Ubuntu, but...
That is a ridiculous amount of wasted desktop real estate. Even if the screen resolution was higher, it would still be intrusive. - smrekar, on 12/05/2008, -1/+12This is dumb.
- ptFoe, on 12/05/2008, -1/+10looks way to complicated and defeats the purpose of simplicity in gnome
- ZeWho, on 12/04/2008, -1/+10Agreed, I'll stick with the current solution too. This looks somewhat like Linux Mint?
- bigbangbuddha, on 12/05/2008, -2/+11Someone is way too in love with the Vista launcher, personally I hate it. The default Gnome menu bar is the best solution so far.
- ToadLeg, on 12/05/2008, -0/+8I recommend Linux Mint for a newbie. (it's based on Ubuntu but makes it a little easier) They are coming out with a new version sometime in the next couple weeks.
http://www.linuxmint.com - nucleeer, on 12/05/2008, -0/+8"slab" in opensuse gnome......
- stoanhart, on 12/05/2008, -0/+7Ubuntu out of the box works just fine. It even has an installer you can run from within Windows (and you can remove it from the Add/Remove Programs list if you don't like it).
- inactive, on 12/05/2008, -3/+10or you just find a .deb and installation is even more automatic than next next agree finish.
your choice. - 3ch0, on 12/05/2008, -0/+6There is a reason why you cant find this in the offical repo. :p
- smacksaw, on 12/05/2008, -2/+8I'll pass. That's exactly what's wrong with KDE 4.x, the menu is intrusive.
If there were submenus, I'd almost say the Netbook Remix launcher is better. If you're going to have something take up your whole screen... - twiztidsinz, on 12/05/2008, -2/+8Have you seen the default menu in KDE4.1?
It's pretty slick - Disease, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5I like my system menus not taking up 75% of my screen.
- Elranzer, on 12/05/2008, -1/+6Windows:
1. Next
2. Next
3. Agree
4. Finish
5. ?????? (SPYWARE)
6. Profit! - asforme, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5gnome-do
The only thing I use panels for is window management now. - inactive, on 12/05/2008, -0/+5anyone can use linux, but it does take a (somewhat) advanced user to set up/maintain it.
the reason nobody's heard of it is because most people know jack ***** about technology.
~25% of diggers use linux compared to the worldwide 0.83%. - LastDitchHero, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5Ok, I used this thing before and totally got rid of it. It is too busy. Maybe someone will like it but it is not for me. Again at least people have some choice.
- twelvedogs, on 12/05/2008, -1/+5It's because the application hasn't been packaged, if you had to install a program from a repository on windows it'd be just as convoluted. To install most linux programs you:
1 click on aptitude.
2 search for program name
3 click install
To install from the web it's just a matter of dling the .deb file and double clicking (same as a windows .msi pretty much) - EnderTheThird, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4No offence to the person who made this panel, but it's hideous with tons of wasted space. Most of the *good* software out there for Linux is available with a .deb or install script that you can just click and run. Most terminal commands for program installations are only necessary if you're trying beta- or alpha-grade software from SVN (which is the case here). But even if you do need to use the terminal, It's still less intrusive than all the malware that comes with all of the "Next, Next, Next, Finish" .exe's out there for Windows.
- EnderTheThird, on 12/05/2008, -0/+4As plain as it is, the panel configuration still takes up less screen real estate. AWN was very cool; I just hated having it take up so much space without a very functional notification area.
- JonForTheWin, on 12/05/2008, -1/+4Stupid and redundant.
- 3ch0, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3I rather bash it...
- yetAnotherCroc, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3You could have just moved everything to one panel at the bottom for him.
- Vektuz, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Why don't application launchers cover the entire screen, anyway? If you click a button to indicate you'd like to start something, why not fill the screen with some sort of easy app picker, instead of crunch it into a corner of the screen (windows and linux)
- crimsoncs, on 12/05/2008, -1/+4sudo apt-get install something_worth_installing > next next agree finish
- PhailQuail, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3The method described compiles the program from source code, compared to the amount of steps that the same process would require on Windows, Ubuntu wins.
Additionally, you can't swap the application launcher on Windows, so even if Ubuntu's instructions required that you jab a fork in your eye, at least its possible :p - Auzy, on 12/05/2008, -0/+3Actually, no menu I've seen is as rediculous as this one (no offence). Its good in theory, but needs serious work to present information more clearly!
I'm not sure if whoever designed this has been to any GUI design classes... - xngk, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2That just makes it harder to do things.
- Biznarie, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Are you implying its easier to do this on a different OS, please enlighten me.
- solarwind24, on 12/09/2008, -0/+2Let's put a silencer on that USP...
- ethana2, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2Sounds like you're still using two panels....
- Junior612, on 12/05/2008, -2/+4"but try it b4 you bash it"
No pun intended right? - Alejandro79, on 12/05/2008, -4/+6No kidding, I'm still wondering if this whole page and its baroque installation instructions and non-obvious steps is a subtle slam on Ubuntu / Lunux's usability or they are seriously expecting regular users to go through all that..
- m0deth, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2yeah....this'll be all kinds of useful @ 1680x1050....not
it's great for netbooks with no useable desktop space to speak of, considering the 7, 9 and 10 inch screens with less than DVD resolution. - ScottyDelicious, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2+1 for GNOME Do.
I have fully transitioned from my Mac to Ubuntu and I couldn't have done it without GNOME Do. I was pretty dependent on QuickSilver. - Brymcon, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2If your looking for a new menu use Ubuntu Netbook Remix on top of Intrepid Ibex http://www.ubuntumini.com/2008/10/installing-ubunt ...
- Ademan, on 12/06/2008, -0/+2I have the control center in Gnome in Ubuntu 8.10, although it wasn't enabled by default, if you right click on your main menu/menu bar and hit edit menus, go to "System" and check the box next to "Control Center" you'll get gnome's control center thing. I don't know if most people have that package though... I may have installed it way back and it just kept getting updated because i usually dist-upgrade.
It isn't that great though, unlike kde's control panel, as far as I can tell this one just launches the normal configuration utilities you'd find in the system menu.
Oh well... now you know... (and if you want to check it out and you don't have the package, I believe the ubuntu package is gnome-control-center, but like I said... it's not that great) - ericoncaffeine, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3Can someone without programming knowledge figure out how to install and use Linux on a daily basis? What's the most user-friendly build/kernel/version/whateverthehellitiscalled for a Linux noob?
- dannytatom, on 12/05/2008, -0/+2This isn't about the OS as a whole, so I'm kinda lost at what you're getting at.
- oobuntu, on 12/05/2008, -2/+4U.G.L.Y
- clouder, on 12/05/2008, -1/+3menu systems... pfft who needs them. gnome-do gives me access to everything in either that crap or the normal ubuntu menus, without... well the menus. If you can use google, you can use gnome-do
- Slade605, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1@ Ericoncaffeine:
If you'd like some personal help you can reach me via the msn name listed on my profile, or else join the IRC network Freenode.net and join #ubuntu. - jamezracer, on 12/05/2008, -3/+4I have used this for a few months now, I'm very impressed actually. although when I use my other ubuntu machine without it, I feel no urge to install it. slight improvement, up to your preference. but try it b4 you bash it
- HonestAbe, on 12/05/2008, -1/+2I really don't understand the obsession some people have with removing EVERYTHING from their desktop and EVERYTHING from their panels. That stuff exists in those places for a reason, you know...
- CharlesSaint, on 12/05/2008, -0/+1I wasn't really hurting for space along my top bar to begin with.
