- shredswithpiks, on 11/06/2008, -0/+21not necessarily an issue with WPA in general on ubuntu. I've had WPA working since 6.06.
Look into your wireless drivers. - abbathdoom, on 11/06/2008, -2/+22WOW! I thought this was just another list of the same 5 new feautres we have read about 10000 times already, but that list is really detailed and has every tiny little GUI update and everything. Im impressed.
- barius, on 11/06/2008, -5/+21Uh...you really can't compare the screenshot program in Windows with the incredibly versatile and easy to use program in Ubuntu.
The Windows screenshot program is not 'single button', you have to press the screenshot button on the keyboard, which creates the shot in the clipboard, from there you need to transfer it to an image program (e.g. mspaint) this is done by starting the program manually then 'pasting' the clipboard into it. This is hardly easy or intuitive, in fact, it's horrible and stupid. No 'normal' user I know is even aware that Windows can do screenshots.
In Ubuntu a screenshot consists of 'press PrtSc button'->See window asking where to save shot or save to clipboard->Done. If you want the more flexible options you need to go into Applications->Accessories->Take Screenshot. The flexible (and complicated) way is what the article is showing. It's still light-years more usable than any Windows screenshot program.
You only find the Linux community humorous because you're too stupid to realize that the world is laughing at you, not with you. - CalcProgrammer1, on 11/06/2008, -3/+14At least GNOME fully supports my Caps Lock key, apparently you can't say the same for KDE.
- nickallen74, on 11/06/2008, -1/+9Unfortunately, Gnome 2.24 has completely broken session management. This used to work in the previous release. When you log in none of your applications are restarted even if you explicitly click the button to save current session. It's a major regression in an otherwise excellent release of Ubuntu.
- Grazfather, on 11/06/2008, -2/+9Incremental improvements ftw.
- smotpoker, on 11/06/2008, -1/+8Just remember "getting attention" doesn't mean they are just getting added. Most of this stuff is pretty cosmetic. It looks like they are just trying to make things easier to use/understand for morons who think it's too complicated is my bet
- muniak, on 11/06/2008, -2/+9O,o I play games on ubuntu?
- Knet88, on 11/07/2008, -1/+8Prefer KDE, but we don't need to say such harsh things to Gnome
- nullity, on 11/07/2008, -0/+7As mentioned, WPA has worked fine since 6.06. The many improvements in NetworkManager 0.7 should make it even easier.
If you were having driver issues, you'll be happy to know that the kernel in Ubuntu 8.10 includes an improved wireless driver architecture and new drivers for many chipsets such as Broadcom that fix a lot of problems. - somestranger26, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7Awesome -- I didn't know they added archive mounting support, it should prove to be quite useful.
- dualscreenman, on 11/07/2008, -1/+7Because Canonical makes KDE/Kubuntu their bitch. :(
In my opinion there should be one distro, with KDE getting equal billing. - muniak, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7The screenshot _improvement_ is actually very neat, though you've been able to take screenshots since long before this with a single key, it also gives the option to directly save it to a file or just keep it in your clipboard. rtfa before you rant pointlessly please.
Also if anyone finds this shutdown menu confusing, they obviously shouldn't be using a computer without help. - MrTea, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6No, I can connect to my WPA protected network with NetworkManager.
- chevriley, on 11/06/2008, -2/+8its the little things that matter.
- inactive, on 11/06/2008, -1/+7Ubuntu: Mixing Debian and Gnome since 2004.
- ethana2, on 11/06/2008, -0/+6Even Jobs knows that its more important to implement ideas than to make ideas.
There's some interview somewhere where he discusses xerox and expounds on that. - inactive, on 11/07/2008, -0/+6I'm not sure if your being sarcastic but i sure was.
- ethana2, on 11/06/2008, -1/+6Nexuiz FTW.
..tremulous is LONG overdue for another release though. - chevriley, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5actually, you're both wrong.
"consequences, david. it's the little things" - srg13, on 11/07/2008, -1/+6Wow, I wasn't expecting this to be a good article, but it's actually a nice roundup. I'm glad that Gnome's screenshot app has got a 'Copy to Clipboard' option now - that was something that will be very useful, but even better would be if you could grab a section of the screen.
Tabbed browsing in Nautilus is also nice. - computershack, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5Working fine here on WPA2-AES.
- barius, on 11/06/2008, -0/+5KDE has had this for quite some time. Though, I am starting to like GNOME more and more.
- mohtasham, on 11/07/2008, -0/+5I had trouble connecting to my wpa network at home with my broadcom wireless card in Hardy. I could connect to wpa network at work, though.
In Intrepid Ibex, I have absolutely no problem with it. - oobuntu, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4That's because Konqueror, Kontact/Kmail and KOffice are decent apps, and use the Qt toolkit. A KDE distro shouldn't require gtk libraries installed.
For similar reasons, this is why you don't get K3b and amarok out of the box on gnome-based distros, even though they are far superior. - dimension128, on 11/07/2008, -0/+4Kubuntu == Ubuntu after typing sudo apt-get install kubuntu-deskop
Well pretty much anyway. A fresh kubuntu install would result in fewer gnome related packages on your box.
Just google 'kde vs gnome' you'll find enough opinions to read about for a fortnight. It all just depends on what kind of window manager you like. - ethana2, on 11/06/2008, -0/+4Ubuntu and Kubuntu are GNOME and KDE, respectively. Completely different desktops, somewhat different operating systems.
- inactive, on 11/07/2008, -1/+5get a better wifi card. WPA has been working without issue for me since 7.04
- theendlessnow, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3Apparently, Gnome advocates are REALLY upset!
I'm just the messenger.... - bj1989, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Although I use Ubuntu 100% of the time it does sound somewhat discouraging GNOME advertises tabbed filebrowsing as a new feature(Konqueror had it for years, I really missed it when I switched to GNOME) and restore from trash as new features.
This is open source right? What has been holding these apparently simple feature improvements back? - brettalton, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3"It'll be really hard for me to keep track which feature was done by which"
Isn't it:
"It'll be really hard for me to keep track which features were done by whom" ??
I miss old-fashioned editors. I really do.
And what hat a pedantic piece of sh*t article that was:
"Pidgin 2.5.2. Woot!" - "GIMP 2.6!!!!! :)"
He does a horrible job of researching which changes were made by Ubuntu and which were made by GNOME too. - MrTea, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3Tell that to the folks in charge of ALSA ( http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Pa ... ), not Ubuntu. Also, oss4 supports x-fi's.
- drewbeta, on 11/06/2008, -0/+3Kubuntu looked more impressive to me, what's the draw-back in respect of the reason why everyone is wild about Ubuntu rather than Kubuntu?
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/08/2008, -0/+3The Windows "screenshot" function is also in GNOME but it has far more options that that of windows. For starters, you can save the screenshot right there. In Windows you have to paste it into an image editing program and THEN save it as a file.
- 4321234, on 11/06/2008, -4/+7CAPS LOCK FTW BITCHES!
- tylerjwilk, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3Urban Terror is a must.
http://www.urbanterror.net/ - ethana2, on 11/06/2008, -1/+4Caps lock can go die, as it has on my machine.
www.colemak.com will show you how.
Backspace FTW. - barius, on 11/07/2008, -0/+3@brettalton,
I'm confused...in every distro I've ever used (which is many), Ctrl+C has always been 'Copy to Clipboard'. If you want direct copy it is, and always has been, select + middle-mouse-click. - csarak, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Wow, dugg for being detailed, and not just a high-level list that felt like an attempt to get pageviews. I found out a few things about the new version that I had not noticed yet.
Also, thank you for being objective and not just an Ubuntu fanboy. I like Ubuntu but I thought there were a few (minor) regressions in this version. - zwaldowski, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Yes, and Dell/Broadcom wireless cards now have a driver in the Restricted Driver Manager OOTB.
- courtjester555, on 11/06/2008, -3/+5Naruto sucks
- Exsecrabilus, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Lulz Brettalton, I'm not that stupid. Did you know that GIMP 2.5 got in AFTER Intrepid's feature freeze? I'm not one of those fanboys who think everything is done by Ubuntu and that Ubuntu is awesome. If you look at my other posts on that blog, you would know I am not a huge fan of Ubuntu. I am just praising Ubuntu's decisions on including and sticking to those applications, instead of whining about a feature freeze and not including them, like what it did to OpenOffice.org 3.0.
- Exsecrabilus, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Exactly. I was going to review Fedora 10 and OpenSUSE 11.1 the exact same way when they got released.
- specialK16, on 11/06/2008, -2/+4Bury me into oblivion, the correct quote is:
"Consequences David, it's the small things." - drewbeta, on 11/10/2008, -0/+2Awesome info SteveMax. currently I am a Mac user, as I am a designer and the porting of Adobe products is not what it could be plus I'm not a huge fan of Windows (personal preference, not trying to start an argument). I do have friends and family who come to me to complain about Vista, and how they're computers keep crashing. so I'm looking for a Linux distro that is almost like Windows that I can recommend that won't be a total culture-shock to the less-tech-savvy user.
OpenSUSE looks pretty sweet. I will have to look for a virtual appliance tonight when I get home to try it out through VMWare (I want to give it a fair shake, and boot discs tend to run so slow because you have to wait for your CD/DVD drive to do the processing). - mohtasham, on 11/07/2008, -1/+3I would say the most important improvement of Intrepid Ibex is its stability and supporting a vast number of hardwares. Believe me, Ubuntu gets sweeter and sweeter with in each new release.
- addicted68098, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2Any word on a simple graphics fix for older nvidia cards?
- drewbeta, on 11/06/2008, -1/+3What exactly is the difference between Ubuntu and Kubuntu? basically all they really say is that Kubuntu is a little prettier from what I read, but I know that there has to be more to it.
- angrykeyboarder, on 11/08/2008, -0/+2KDE 3.5 was excellent 4.1 is not yet as usable.
- mynameistux, on 11/07/2008, -0/+2"its the little things that matter."
Thats what she said? -
