- wedderburn, on 11/20/2007, -0/+17they let 12 year olds on digg now?
- pooptaster, on 11/20/2007, -2/+12Hey *****, my Arch install boots in 26 seconds, including apache, mysql, and kde. XP takes longer, even on a clean tweaked install. I couldn't tell you about Vista because my computer doesn't have the balls to run it (not that I would want to anyway)
Long boot times are for distros that try to cater to everybody instead of letting the user set things up how they want to begin with. Just like you can improve boot time in your precious (I presume Windows, judging by your attitude) system, the same can be done with Linux.
Do some research before you comment, and you may not make an ass of yourself. - digitalarcanum, on 11/20/2007, -0/+9the guy is pointing out the problems he's having with a distro that's reviewed and he gets dugg down, yet ***** like you get dugg up. Digg is a tech website. Get with it.
- schestowitz, on 11/20/2007, -5/+13Also from the newsletter: "In reality, the percentage of Linux-using readers is probably still higher, but the sheer number of search and spam bots which access the web site daily and which invariable identify themselves as arriving from a Windows client make the result look overly flattering for the Microsoft operating system."
This is only one among many reasons Web stats can't be trusted when it comes to measuring Linux market share. Read that bit as well FWIW. - amnezia22, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8Calliing fedora slow and bulky is a moronic statement that makes you look pretty clueless.
in reality preformance wise its hard to tell the two apart - http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item ... - DirtySnachez, on 11/20/2007, -0/+8They both do pretty much the same thing, but one uses RPM and the other DEB's
You can try the live cd yourself - stevedclarke, on 11/20/2007, -0/+7The only people who use it are probably the ones that make it laugh out loud? A distro with a sense of humour; intriguing.
- smurf22, on 11/20/2007, -1/+7Lets see, I installed ubuntu in 2 hours, had it running and was on the web. No getting drivers, no weird problems no trouble. With windows it took me 4 hours, to instal the OS, 30 minutes to find the driver cd for my sound card, and a couple minutes to find the driver cd for my graphics card for it to run smoothly. Hmmm.....
- TheGreatBelow, on 11/20/2007, -3/+9I want a Ubuntu vs. Fedora 8 comparision
- HarryBauzonia, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5Yeah. Any more they're the place to hurl insults around. I remember when this used to be a tech site you little peckerheads hadn't ruined yet.
See? I can play too. - ungamedplayer, on 11/20/2007, -0/+5It shows you havn't used it.
- andyakadum, on 11/20/2007, -1/+6Yep. They are pretty much on par, with the exception that bluetooth support in fedora pwns ubuntu.
And fedora ships their changes upstream, while ubuntu doesn't. Kind of defeats the point.
Real men build their own packages, anyway - MadN, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4I know quite a few people who run Linux, My non-techie sister is running it on her Dell due to repeat HDD reformats after viruses ruined her Windows. You also might be interested in the handy spell check feature of Firefox under Linux; just because.....
My Toshiba laptop is running Fedora 8 as I type this. - 0xception, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4what about a photo w/ the file name photo.jpg.exe ... ? maybe if your not familar but windows cuts off the last extensions name in a lot of places so that photo.jpg.exe is not just photo.jpg but wait ... it's executable! oh *****
- 0xception, on 11/20/2007, -0/+426 minutes? are you doing a quick reformat of the drive or a full? and what type of hardware are you running it on? plus once windows is installed and you get first boot your not done until you download update after update after update and keep going back for more updates... it takes a LONG time w/ all those updates... ubuntu and fedora can take some times as well to get all the first updates but i would say no where near that of XP.
- fakeollie, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4That's what she said...
- kaph, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4They do, it's called Red Hat.
- Philluminati, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5Your a computer retard mate if you can't use Linux. See all these comments? All these people can!
- stevedclarke, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4'speling' trouble? Hmmm.
- pixelbeat_, on 11/20/2007, -1/+5I use ubuntu 7.10 in work and fedora 8 at home.
Both are equivalent and have much the same bugs.
Network manager still sucks though :(
http://www.pixelbeat.org/docs/f8.html - andyakadum, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Geez, Linux isn't for mom's.
- jnorris441, on 11/20/2007, -0/+4Impression of Fedora 8: "HAY GUYZ I'M A HAT"
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3Security differences too. Because of Fedora's server roots, they have extensive security layers by default that Ubuntu has chosen to omit in favor of ease of use.
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Security/Features - diggymow, on 11/20/2007, -1/+4'While it doesn't look likely that Linux will become a dominant operating system for some time yet, the gap between Windows and Linux is definitely narrowing. That's at least according to the DistroWatch web server statistics, which collects information about the operating systems used to visit this web site.' Yeah there's a realistic way to measure Windows vs Linux usage....
- twigboy, on 11/20/2007, -0/+3correct me if im wrong, but it seems one of the main argument points for linux fanboys is that u can run linux on a fairly old machine.
- init100, on 11/21/2007, -0/+3Inferior operating system? Well, I guess that's why it's on 85% of the 500 most powerful supercomputers on the planet.
- inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2My Kubuntu disk,I was told,is in the mail.
- Jammerdelray, on 11/20/2007, -2/+4Fedora 8 is a excellent distro. Then again so is Ubuntu etc etc. Cut the rating 8.5 out of 10 since there are a lot of distros that are great in their own respects.
- 0xception, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2... while true,
it seems that gdgi's statements is more of a generalization and pooptaster's (lovely name) is anecdotal evidence in contrary to gdgi's generalized statements. so i would say it still is kinda valid :) ... but eh - inactive, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2It's fine, and it ran Fedora 7 just fine. It's just these three issues I'm having. Everything else runs nice and fast.
- init100, on 11/21/2007, -0/+2"Red Hat you are of the same ilk as Xandros, Linspire, and others."
Red Hat signed no patent deal with Microsoft, which Linspire, Xandros and Novell did. The Linspire CEO even had the stomach to call those that refused to sign patent deals "high-brow pirates". Red Hat is very far from being even remotely comparable with Linspre and Xandros. - mumblyjoe, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2They changed their business model and, now, only target corporate types. Fine by me. Fedora, far from being a "dumping ground", is where the magic now happens.
- DustyinBFE, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Just left Fedora for Kubuntu 7.10. So far, I'm a lot happier. But what do I know, I just started using Linux in March.
- Philluminati, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2speling trouble?
you mean KERNEL - cabazorro, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Install Fedora 8 X64. Upload an mpeg file, any mpeg. Try to launch it with xine, or totem or and they come up with a a lame message that they don't have the plugin. Install the nvidia repo and try it again. Install mplayer, now mplayer does the job from the command line but still xine and totem won't play squat. The pride I have for running Fedora is the same pride Han Solo has for the Millennium Falcon.
- newwatch51, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2How good is your computer? It may not be fast enough to run Fedora. Maybe something like Antix would run better.
- djGentoo, on 11/20/2007, -0/+2Agreed. I use Fedora (right now, at least... 0.o) because PCLOS has a weird bug where if I close my laptop up, it locks up, but otherwise, PCLOS is still amazing. The 0.93a release was great...
- NedSlider, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Sorry, rereading your comment, what I should have said was...
Not sure what you mean by CentOS support by the minute - CentOS is a free community rebuild of RHEL. It doesn't offer any official support contracts and is free for anyone to use. Support is via mailing lists or the community forum the same as the majority of Linux distros. It is essentially a free LTS version of Fedora... or more accurately, Fedora is a large scale public beta programme for RHEL/CentOS. It's your choice, but CentOS IS exactly what you appear to be asking for. - hackertamer, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1One thing that was heavily lacking in the installation for me was the fact that you can't pause between formatting the partitions and installing the packages. For example, I like to have an encrypted root partition. Installing Slackware, Gentoo, and Debian or any Debian-based distro, I'm able to let the installer format the partitions, then switch over to a console, unmount, cryptsetup, and re-mount the partition, switch back, and continue the installation of the base system with little effort. In Fedora, you can't even set an existing formatted partition to use as a root partition -- you _must_ reformat the partition in order to install, so I can't do the deed ahead of time.
Granted, it's easy for beginners to set up, but if you need control in the installation, look elsewhere. - ours, on 11/20/2007, -3/+4Don't forget the people surfing from work with Windows machines. *Wants to go home to my Ubuntu machine*
- NedSlider, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Or CentOS - the free Community Enterprise OS that's a rebuild clone of RHEL. Highly recommended for those who tire of the constant Fedora upgrade cycle but can't afford or don't need Red Hat's support.
- Philluminati, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1it was intention.
- jmnx12, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1i kinda prefere 7 i tried installing 8 and weird ***** was going on, my wireless card was supported right away but my wired card wasnt, my sound card also wasnt either, strange. i may just have to wait till fedora 9 with kde 4 :D
- 0xception, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1... eh, dont know about that, i have both setup and i think fedora 8 is actually a MUCH better improvement over the previous versions, i think at this point it compares directly w/ ubuntu in terms of easiness and completeness of OS... I have high hopes for fedora as it seems they are starting to pick up pace, while ubuntu seems to be slowing down... but that's just my personal opinion. I think ubuntu will continue to be the "use-friendly" gateway drug for windows converts but fedora will place itself back in it's niche of bleeding edge and innovation. all will be restored :)
- williebee, on 11/20/2007, -2/+3PCLinuxOS is still the fastest and most stable IMHO, (been using linux for six years)
- underthelinux, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1You're not wrong. But you're not right.
With all the distros in the world, some are geared towards high-end performance, some are geared towards low-end performance. So main selling point for linux? Yes. Selling point for all linux distros? No. - oshu, on 11/22/2007, -0/+1Sounds like you have your hostname set to something that doesn't actually resolve. To test this, first run the command "hostname" and then run "host" on whatever you get back.
Like this:
oshu@zombie:~$ hostname
zombie.bar.foo
oshu@zombie:~$ host zombie.bar.foo
Host zombie.bar.foo not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
If it says not found, as in the above example, then that's your problem. If so, you can fix it by adding your hostname to the /etc/hosts file.
Just add a line like this:
127.0.1.1 zombie.bar.foo zombie (use your actual hostname output)
On the other hand, if the host command does return an IP, then you should do as many here suggest, and check out the forums/faqs/docs. - estvir, on 11/20/2007, -0/+1My anecdotal evidence beats your anecdotal evidence.
- FarisMadi, on 11/20/2007, -0/+0I'm using Fedora 8 on my home pc and on my work pc
and it is awesome ..
the pretty think in Debian is that its repositories are huge, more than repositories of Redhat.
I've tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, CentOS, FC7 and finally FC8.... So, If you are a developer I recommend to use Redhat....and also it depends on each one's experience with Linux distros. - dunbone, on 11/21/2007, -1/+1i did forget to mention however, that ubuntu runs super hot with the laptop fan running most of the time... and it chews batteries up quicker too.... i have high hopes for the future of ubuntu though.. i do enjoy using it despite it's loooooong list of issues
