- AngelBunny, on 11/29/2008, -1/+6has any direct3D/directX game ever been ported to linux without supporting openGL?
- Bicep, on 11/29/2008, -4/+9So many people are trying to say "Just use Windows and dual boot"... it's like saying, "Just hush up and pay the Wind0ws tax".
Why should we pay a tax to MSFT? Why? Does W1ndows make my family's life better? I think not. I don't want my kids to be dumbed down when using their computers. My kids are GNU/Linux users, because GNU/Linux shares the knowledge instead of restricting it. GNU/Linux enables humans with technology.
Russian kids will be very good at using technology, they get the GNU/Linux OS: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/7034828.stm
Why should our gets not get the best in education (free programming tools and millions of lines of code for examples)? Why should our schools be locked into a profit model to teach our children? It's very limiting.
I don't know about you, but I was not put on this earth to make MSFT employees the richest in the world. And after V1sta, I think it's very easy to see the problems that are created by the W1ndows way of monopolizing the operating system.
You may say the W1ndows Operating System is the best... I say, how do you know, when W1ndows is your only choice? - woody1987, on 11/29/2008, -1/+4I just hope its a proper port to opengl rather than it being wrapped around by wine or cedega like EVE online was.
- devHH, on 11/29/2008, -0/+3maybe taking a look at http://www.urbanterror.net/ would result in quicker success than trying to move a "fat" company.. ;-)
- amstell, on 11/29/2008, -3/+5OK. So I'll respond.
* "So many people are trying to say "Just use Windows and dual boot"... it's like saying, "Just hush up and pay the Wind0ws tax".
Tax, monopoly. Its funny to hear you use those words as often as you can. Like its some form of an insult. Microsoft has been around a long time now and they created the market we see today. Maybe their business model doesn't agree with what you or I believe today, but at the time it was the best way for the company to succeed and they did!
* "Russian kids will be very good at using technology, they get the GNU/Linux OS:"
Really Russia. We are one of the leaders in the world of technology.

Does that mean that our younger generation who used DOS back in the day could have benefited more from using Unix instead. I honestly don't think so. Maybe so. But the personal computer never took off until we got those funny little windows we could click with a mouse. At least in the household.
* "Why should our gets[kids] not get the best in education (free programming tools and millions of lines of code for examples)?"
Come on man. Do you really think giving a "child" a million lines of code will encourage them too learn. That's an overwhelming task to take in. Start with QBasic and their examples like I did. Maybe a child will better understand a computer using Linux but most businesses run windows and office. And when "M$" owns 90% market share, its hard for a business to hire someone who has never used windows.

Doesn't "M1crosoft" offer free compilers and IDE's already? Maybe not open source but still free.

I feel this is an old argument. We now have Ubuntu, Apple and Windows in schools. The word on linux is getting out, as you know. Intel just released their open source phone OS. Google with Android. All these great things are happening which is allowing people to see other options.
I personally don't say that "W1ndows" is the best. I feel that Linux is the best O/S right now for me. But I do feel that some credit should be given to Microsoft or Bill Gates and Steve Balmer for what they created. From BASIC to Windows to "*****" Vista, credit should be given. Well, maybe not for Vista but Mojave yes :) (little joke)
Now I completely agree with you on the fact that open source is an amazing idea and will forever change the computer just as "M$" did. I personally run an Ubuntu Dell 1420n with 8.10 (my laptop). Dell E521 with Ubuntu 8.04. Gateway M520? loaded with Arch Linux. I have a remote Trixbox(asterisk) server that I run a telephony server through and a server at my house loaded with CentOS. I completely understand what you are saying I just think that you bashing "M$" and preaching to companies that they should "support" Linux because "I will take my money else where if you don't" is a lame excess and doesn't get us anywhere.
But thats just my opinion. Thanks for the discussion. Now I'm off to write a thesis paper. HA! - Kingoftherings, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Way too many links. You sent that to Valve, and included a link to the Monopoly wikipedia article? Wouldn't they know what a monopoly is? Also, why does Universal Operating System link to Debian Kernels on wikipedia?
Anyway, yes, I'd love to see Steam on Linux. I'd drop Windows for good. - tnoy, on 11/29/2008, -2/+4In the time it took you to type up that blog posting, Valve probably sold a dozen copies of HL2 to Windows users.
- ECas123, on 11/29/2008, -0/+1You're punny.
- Bicep, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I didn't actually send all the links to VALVE. Also, I changed the monopoly link to a better one (thanks for pointing that out).
Here's the new link:
http://www.usdoj.gov/atr/cases/f3800/msjudgex.htm - inactive, on 11/30/2008, -2/+3Protip: Nobody takes you seriously when every other word you write is "GNU/Linux" or "W1nd0ws"
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1YEAH! Also, and I want Duke Nukem 3D and Castle Wolfenstein!!!
Why should PC users get all the new games?!! We Linux user's deserve Deus Ex too! Our graphics drivers can handle it!! - bj1989, on 11/29/2008, -1/+2It works near perfectly in wine, even though it would be a full port they could optimalise wine to run half life 2 flawlessly Like google did.
I would definitely buy it if I hadn't already bought the windows version(played all HL2 games in wine). - Bicep, on 11/29/2008, -4/+4The niche of selling a proprietary operating system has past. It was good while it lasted, but now technology has become advanced enough that the base Operating System cannot be represented by a proprietary business model.
To advance to the future of computerized technology, the basic operating systems in our computers must become open standard. This will make it possible for the widest array of applications to be created for the computer system, and for the operating system itself to be molded into the most fitting tool for the hardware it is applied to. An open operating system means a more versatile and powerful operating system. As consumers, we must demand that our operating systems be open standards based, by not doing so we restrict technology from moving forward. Newton once said we are riding upon the shoulders of giants... Monopoly of computer operating systems kills the giant, leaving nothing for humanity to ride forward upon. Share the technology with humanity, make it open, make it standard, make it better than ever. Enable humans with technology, that's what it is for. - amstell, on 11/29/2008, -7/+3Petitions, emails and blog entries won't do much for "GNU/Linux" and gaming (IMHO). Why write to a company when their game already runs great on Wine? They released their engine to community for free. What else do you want? Dual boot windows man, its not that hard. Do you use the proprietary drivers for your new 9600GT card? Do you own a Wii, Playstation, XBox? Your efforts are commendable but not worthwhile to a company that is already doing more than EA when it comes to open source.
Like tnoy said "In the time it took you to type up that blog posting, Valve probably sold a dozen copies of HL2 to Windows users." - Smegzor, on 11/29/2008, -5/+1This is nothing gnu however it plays perfectly in Wine so a Linux port isn't a big deal.
- inactive, on 11/29/2008, -10/+3This guy says "GNU/Linux" every time he refers to the OS...'nuff said.
