Cant say that I agree with you %100
I think that Vista's greatest competitor is XP and probably will be for a while to go. Vista just has VERY little incentive to upgrade to it. XP will do the job if you are not 'into' computers. Linux distro's are certainly on the up. But whilst Linux is pretty stable and so on and so forth. The X server and X applications have a long way to go.
Also, the frameworks (GTK, KDE, etc) are nowhere near as smooth as something like .NET. Have you seen uTorrent? 300kb program, loads in seconds, flowing with functionality. That's because, the GUI components are memory resident. when the program starts up, it doesn't have to load the GUI code each time as .NET is already available. I would like to see GTK and KDE go in these directions and get smoother that they already are. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2 The other 800 pound gorilla has spoken...
I feel better now. - exsst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I believe so...
And all this is very much in good time considering Vista is only around the corner with it's ***** interface, the strong-hold DRM ***** and the ***** breathtakingly awful retail price.
Apple/Linux, here we come! - xtaski, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Could this be the first kiss of death that backfires on Microsoft?
- seweso, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Novell isn't the bad guy, maybe just a bit naive. And Microsoft is also slowly changing it's ways. It's becoming more open but they are taking baby-steps. If they do not turn around fast enough they will be run over.
The IT-world is changing and we are already behind the tipping-point.
