- chanop, on 10/22/2008, -0/+31Sweet! This just might fit in my mom's basement with me
- pjnofrills, on 10/22/2008, -0/+11..integrated graphics, sorry..
- benologist, on 10/22/2008, -0/+8I love how kids think the whole point of open source is to give them something for $0.
- wacka, on 10/22/2008, -0/+7From the article:
"The basic pricing of z10 BC starts at under $100,000, about the same as the previous business class mainframe. Typical deals will range from $250,000 to $500,000"
Still sounds expensive to go in your basement. - gtrider, on 10/22/2008, -0/+7You still need storage with it, so 100k for the MF and IFLs to run what 100 or so Linux guests? Least with the MF you can fit the 100 images in your basement a little easier, add a DS8000 for storage http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/storage/disk/ds8000/ ... and you could even heat your house.
- eeclark, on 10/22/2008, -3/+9Awww.how cute.
- Lhandroval, on 10/22/2008, -1/+6Hey, if it scales well, it's a pretty smart move.
- DeceasedVirus, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4No need for that ol' space heater. Oh and your mom would finally have that nice heated Tile in her bathroom and Kitchen.
- Codename, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4I wanna snuggle with it. ;-)
- Lupich, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4Finally, a machine to automate all of my search query's for the word "Porn" and its many variations.
- mrsteveman1, on 10/22/2008, -0/+4Just keep your fingers out of the ports, pervert. It's just a baby.
- WildTang3nt, on 10/22/2008, -0/+3Typically, when a mainframe goes down, someone gets fired. These things are built to keep running. You can hot-swap CPUs in these things. Yes, CPUs.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2System/360 FTW!
- mahadiga, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2Free != Open source
- mrsteveman1, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2IBM hasn't built a business around trying to sell GPL software directly so your comment makes no sense.
They all build a business around selling hardware, middleware, or support. IBM i think does all three. - inactive, on 10/22/2008, -0/+2Hey, IBM had Virtual Machines down pat a long time before MacOSX fingered it out...on the other hand, we were SOOooo proud when we got our 1024K mainframe. (Does the CIA and the DOD still use mainframes?)
- fluxion, on 10/22/2008, -1/+3no, that was satan
- Loonacy, on 10/22/2008, -2/+4Is this the baby that was in that PS3 commercial?
- UberNick, on 10/22/2008, -1/+2Even hardened IT guys like us are suckers for baby mainframes. Adawwable!
- luchid, on 10/24/2008, -0/+1Yes, and tons of companies that outsource their infrastructure to IBM are going with mainframe-oriented solutions.
- SmellyGeekBoy, on 10/22/2008, -2/+3But can it run Linu... Oh, wait.
- coreyb, on 10/22/2008, -1/+2With new strides in cloud and other utility computing schemes, I think that mainframes are done... With a mainframe if it goes down, then everything goes down.
- inactive, on 10/22/2008, -2/+3only IBM could come up with something like this!!!
- DeceasedVirus, on 10/22/2008, -2/+2Since the subject is nigh. . . Will it Blend?
- BDJC, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0Linux 'baby' Mainframe? Does it look like this?
http://digg.com/linux_unix/The_Future_of_Linux_is_ ... - s14sh3r, on 10/22/2008, -2/+2Make money from support.
- icarus76, on 10/22/2008, -0/+0That's the point though - mainframes don't go down! They just sit there, looking all serene...
- kraftj, on 10/22/2008, -7/+4yes but will it play crysis?
- infinitus64, on 10/22/2008, -4/+1fail , it is "can it run crysis?"
- cubicledrone, on 10/22/2008, -10/+5But, but, but, how can you make money by giving the software away for free?
FUD HAS FAILED.
