- nerddtvg, on 10/09/2009, -5/+134I support this highly, but let's try to get rid of the Flash requirement. There are other libraries that support FLV streams and renders without overtaking the CPU.
- eplawless, on 10/09/2009, -4/+80Canada :\
- trogdoor, on 10/09/2009, -1/+50Yes, but do they support the DRM that Hulu wants?
- MaxMWood, on 10/09/2009, -4/+50Still isn't watchable in the UK though. :/
- peestandingup, on 10/09/2009, -0/+46Blame Adobe for making such a ***** Flash plugin for Linux.
Its not nearly as bad on other systems. - pp7k, on 10/09/2009, -1/+45Yeah, it's so wonderful that Hulu is now open to all...in the United States.
But hey, how many computers could there be outside the U.S., right? The Canadians have a couple and I think there's one in Europe now. - BloggerSavvy, on 10/09/2009, -0/+41Planet Earth :\
- ThantiK, on 10/09/2009, -1/+40Oh come on. I'm an OSS Advocate, and I'm really tired of this *****. CONGRATULATE HULU ON THIS. Nobody's going to want to bring anything else to linux if the userbase that gets it just cries like little babies when things are released.
Thank you Hulu for bringing another piece of software to the Linux desktop - I appreciate your efforts in recognizing the Linux community as a legitimate target for your programs. - WoollyMittens, on 10/09/2009, -8/+44Good. Now stop discriminating against Europeans and I might actually use this instead of STEALING everything in torrents.
- kilodelta, on 10/09/2009, -2/+36Canada, please.
- warp99, on 10/09/2009, -1/+33On OS X it's just as bad taking up to 100% CPU cycles even on Duo Core systems:
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/42930
There are thousands of posts with the exact same problems as Linux users. - justintime32, on 10/09/2009, -2/+29Actually, the component of Boxee that lets hulu and other flash-based video sites to work is closed source.
- adderx99, on 10/09/2009, -1/+22interesting, but honestly the web ui is superior.
if you get seg faults with the 64bit version, then $sudo apt-get remove flashplugin-installer and install the 64 bit flash libraries. (google it)
i agree with nerddtvg above me though, flash deserves do die. in general. just make it go away. its far too cpu-reliant when even netbooks have sufficient gpu capabilities to run full screen video. the hulu desktop interface runs very sluggishly even on my intel i7. thats just wrong... - depro9, on 10/09/2009, -18/+35Skanks but no skanks, i'll stick with the free & open BOXEEeeeee!!!!11
- kavaliro, on 10/09/2009, -1/+16Step up to the plate, Netflix.
- tekiek, on 10/09/2009, -0/+15Official Myth plugin plz!
- peestandingup, on 10/09/2009, -0/+14I wasnt running Compiz on either one. Its a ***** plugin.
- infectaphibian, on 10/09/2009, -0/+14Was excited about this, but after trying it I have to say I got much better performance just viewing the Hulu web site under Midori.
- cantormath, on 10/09/2009, -0/+14Bravo Hulu!
Way to go and good looking out for Linux. - Dude12, on 10/09/2009, -0/+14Even if you have something bad to say about this, let's all agree that this is awesome that companies are embracing the linux platform, now if only this can seamlessly integrate into XBMC. Yeah I know there is Boxee but the skinning is so much better on XBMC, it gives that wow factor that Boxee lacks. Boxee guys need to work on this now if they want me to go into there camp, otherwise I'm still content just to open up firefox to get my hulu fix. Hulu guys, you still get major props from me for taking this step.
- SpamDog, on 10/09/2009, -1/+14Mythbuntu FTW!!!
- InactiveUser, on 10/09/2009, -1/+13Anywhere but America :\
- warp99, on 10/09/2009, -0/+12Here's the problem, with Flash on Linux it depends on if you're running Compiz. Adobe decided that it will not use the GPU when Compiz is enabled but will fall back to software rendering mode instead:
http://blogs.adobe.com/penguin.swf/2008/05/flash_u ...
It's not a Linux issue per se, but it's Adobe use of OpenGL with full screen rendering. This is the common thread on why the performance on both platforms are horrible. On the Dell Mini 9 it's an Intel issue because they released a half baked driver.
Nvidia doesn't seem to have problems unless you have low end equipment and are using Compiz. Flash is watchable on my media server with an Nvidia 6200 card without Compiz, but it does suck up to 70% CPU cycles. - ricksite, on 10/09/2009, -0/+12I don't suppose this will run on the PS3 linux. I imagine it is only for x86. :(
- matthewstinar, on 10/09/2009, -3/+13Copyright infringement isn't stealing because they still have their video after you torrent it. Furthermore, US copyright holders have no right to enforce US copyright law in the EU or anywhere else. The EU should be permitted to pass laws that make sense for them instead of being bullied into passing (broken) US copyright law.
- amoore2600, on 10/09/2009, -1/+11Hulu Desktop Client for Linux is beautiful, it gives boxee and XBMC a run for its money in terms of its looks, LIRC on it is very shaky. Its nice to see Hulu giving a shout to Linux and building Desktop Client for Linux.
- zoomaKabu, on 10/09/2009, -2/+11I thought the browser was supposed to supplant the OS. Why are we building desktop apps to present web based content?
- fridder, on 10/10/2009, -0/+9YAY for Hulu. Netflix people, please notice this and finally do SOMETHING for Linux/Unix folk!
- njhardc0re, on 10/09/2009, -1/+10Can someone tell me the purpose of ANY desktop clients that serve the same information and almost identical layout of its web based version? Do people not have a browser on their machine? I just don't see the need to install an extra client and have that running rather than using a browser. I can see if there is a difference in performance but I really don't think that is true.
- Asianwaste, on 10/09/2009, -1/+9I like the desktop client but I want the thing to be compatible with my remote. So far only arrow keys, back, and enter key work, which is fine but it'd be nice if play, pause, stop, fwd, etc worked too.
- Nabinkm, on 10/09/2009, -0/+8Still needs flash player...
Time to push open video please!!!

Does Hulu Desktop for Linux require Flash?
Yes, you must have Adobe Flash Player 9.0.124 or higher installed. - laserdog, on 10/09/2009, -1/+9It makes is easier to control via remote control than a browser.
- pickypg, on 10/09/2009, -0/+7I get 20 Mbps download, and 10 Mbps upload with FiOS (in the US). I'll take that, and Hulu, thanks.
- counterplex, on 10/09/2009, -0/+7Might be as simple as editing the menu and adding a launcher for this hulu client. The rest is all about configuring lirc to control the client.
- phantasm000, on 10/09/2009, -0/+7works like a dream on Arch
- dublea2, on 10/09/2009, -1/+7I just installed it... it is clunky and slow on a Core 2 Duo with a 9800GTX...
- Bicep, on 10/09/2009, -3/+9This player is AWESOME!! Right on hulu - way to go!!
Now it's time to Let ABC and FOX know to switch their full episodes over to this hulu player on their website... As opposed to the MSFT funded MoveNetworks player on there that is NOT Linux compatible (although they say it is coming.. bet it will be faster now).
Contact abc here: http://site.abc.go.com/player/index?pn=index
Contact Fox via email here: askfox(_at_)fox(_dot_)com
What was that about Linux marketshare again? Oh yeah... it's on the rise... explosively rising. - Elranzer, on 10/09/2009, -2/+8It's the advertisers. Hulu would need to implement an advertising system for Canada, UK, Europe, etc. No use just showing American ads to non-US viewers. Plus the advertisers in those countries would have to make an agreement with Hulu.
The ball's in the court of the advertisers in Europe, not with NBC/Fox for Hulu. - armo, on 10/09/2009, -2/+8Torrents FTW!
- warp99, on 10/09/2009, -0/+6You can use lircmd and turn you remote into a mouse:
http://www.lirc.org/html/configure.html
That's what I use for fast forward and pause when not using my media keyboard. - TwenT4, on 10/09/2009, -0/+6I'll do that more often if it means more mainstream linux apps.
I'll even start the "Jerk for OSS foundation" to gain, ahem, exposure. - Frostek, on 10/09/2009, -0/+6A good start. I hope they continue to improve this resource and show their competitors that they can grab a market that they aren't even addressing.
- TwenT4, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5why are people bitching about Hulu? it's a product made for the united states, end of story.
they're not allowed to tread on other countries' copyright laws because their local channels pay money to acquire the rights to rebroadcast these American programs. they don't owe the entire world their bandwidth.
Being open source has absolutely sweet ***** all to do with this!
(im canadian, and want hulu available here btw) - Krumm, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5VPN FTW!
I grabbed one and it only costs £3 per month and you can watch Hulu all day if you want, and (even more interesting sometimes) the American ads they have.
I have no idea why they have such a boner for cotton right now, but I'm thinking I should go buy some... - jaxparrow, on 10/09/2009, -1/+6A++++ COMMENT!!!1!!1! WOULD READ AGAIN!!!1!!
- warp99, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5If you have the 32-bit plugin of flash installed with ndispluginwrapper you'll get a seg fault so it needs to be removed and instead install the 64-bit Alpha version:
http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplayer10/6 ...
With the correct version of flash Hulu desktop runs well on my system. The only addition is that you need to add the libflashplayer.so path to the ~./huludesktop config file. - Frostek, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5Give it time. They're nice enough to make a start of things.
- bzaks, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5I'd honestly rather see an Android port of this. - like how youtube has it.
- canthraxp, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5Latin America :\
- aserer511, on 10/09/2009, -0/+5awesome!
