- inactive, on 10/30/2007, -7/+43Why is this news? It's a virtual machine software. It's SUPPOSED to be able to do this.
"Hey, guys! I bought a new car, and guess what I can do with it! That's right, I can drive down the street! Stop the presses!" - underdog5004, on 10/30/2007, -0/+22Don't forget, if you're using beryl/compiz fusion, disable the hotkey F8 for it temporarily, as you need to hit F8 when installing XP!
- bmartin, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Except then you wouldn't be running Windows XP on Linux, which was the original goal... and if you didn't want to do that, you wouldn't be trolling articles like this, right?
D'oh! - djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -5/+24I knew from the instant I saw the title that this article would be overrun with Windows fandorks. It's practically a law of physics that OS fanboys (of any kind) have to dump their crap all over articles that don't affect them an iota. Am I right?
...Oh, I see I'm being Dugg down. That must mean I'm wrong. Riiight. - inactive, on 10/30/2007, -3/+18I'm not interested unless I can run virtual Vista on my Powerbook, while I sit in Starbucks and write haiku.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 10/10/2007, -3/+18So you're saying I'm not using a Mac because I'm poor?!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Did you really ask this question?
- zeromancer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15i used to be like you. i used to hate linux because it was 'hard to use' and Windows looked and worked so much better. But then i realized that nothing good comes easy, so I stopped complaining and learned how to use linux. In my wisdom, i realized microsoft is still part of me and therefore I run an XP partition. although i rarely use it, it comes in handy when I want to do some gaming, photoshop or flash ( ***** you Adobe, make an x64 linux flash plugin already!!!)
So really, young grasshopper, you couldn't be more wrong. Good software does not always cost money. - Phocion55, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13I love it when Windows users mistakenly reveal their level of utter stupidity in the process of trying to discredit Linux.
Dugg up. And thanks! - djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Let's see...
-More secure
-Less bloated
-Free
-100% customizable
-Under active development (in other words, you don't have to wait 6 years for a new release)
Maybe it's just that you're too lazy to look for reasons. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14*WOOSH*
- freezerburn666, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11i have a laptop that is running just ubuntu gutsy, thats it. and its perfectly fine.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10So why are you even using Linux?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Try wine, or cedega, it supports alot of windows games
- martalli, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11Sometimes wine just won't run my legacy software. Support for legacy systems like windows (or supernes) is sometimes useful.
- kickinazz, on 10/30/2007, -3/+11Does this really need a video? I find written tutorials way easier to follow than some lame video with annoying music.
- bowens44, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10 I can easily afford a Mac , I just don't like them. Linux is not only free, it's better.
- knightboat, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10That is the worst post I've ever read.
- trippinlikegod, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Linux does have a lot of really great games if you'd take more than 3 seconds to look for them. Plus with Cedega pretty much every popular title runs almost flawless on my machine. Core2 Duo 1G Ram 7900GS. Because my computer used to have Vista on it which consumed a good 600M of my small RAM pool I actually have a few games that run FASTER in Linux.
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8http://www.whylinuxisbetter.net/
Also keep in mind we can still run Windows without leaving Linux, as seen with this guide.
I've never found one advantage in using only Windows. ;) - JTJaskot, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10I have a Core2 Duo w/ 2gb Ram, 8800GTS and I only boot Linux on that machine.
- funnyman2, on 10/10/2007, -10/+16Dugg for 'EVOKING THE DEVIL'
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12Because contrary to popular belief, there are things Windows can do better and more easily than Linux..and emulation doesn't always cut it.
- Archon810, on 10/10/2007, -6/+12The end: Ubuntu, The Power of Linux? What does Ubuntu have to do with this?
- leukhe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Neither is windows XP.. ;)
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7SWEARING IS CRUISE CONTROL FOR COOL!
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Konqueror can change your browser ID so it thinks you're using IE. And if their site layout REALLY demands that you use Windows... Tell them to redesign their facking site!
- picsectionpleez, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Oh that's OK. My speakers don't work under Linux anyway...
- sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5True, that's why I like the deeply technical Linux articles. The Microsoft fanboys being completely clueless on technology but especially Linux technology have no way to crap over articles like those. These types of articles are just asking for Microsoft fanboys though.
- Szandor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Maybe he likes Ubuntu?
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7and Hats off to you Mr. Obvious complete waste of space!
- JTJaskot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5http://winehq.org/ I emulate with an OS I like, that doesn't need nearly as much maintenance as Windows. Plus, I like looking at glxgears (I know it isn't a performance measurement).
Also, Linux is gaining momentum, I don't think there's any doubting that. Give it time, there will be more native games. - Rocketmac, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6Oh yeah, you could also run VMware workstation 6, which can support DirectX 9 (soon), or Fusion (for MAC) which can support Direct X 8.1 :) It's not open source, but sometimes going to a corporation for a better solution is worth it.
- funnyman2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I have only quoted what the video starts with.. 'Evoking the devil'
- cannonballtrane, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Yay!! Feed the troll!! Let him bask in the reflected glory of his own vitriol!
- CCmachined, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4newsflash: DirectX doesnt work in VirtualBox, so you won't be able to play many games.
Just incase you were gonna do that.
note: its poorly supported in VMware.... - djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4I triple-boot- and not one of my 3 partitions runs Windows.
- jimmy89, on 10/30/2007, -0/+4or press ALT-GR/F8
that works ...
:D - badassninja, on 10/10/2007, -6/+9Why does every Linux video I have ever seen have the most bad ass music set to it? It's great.
- GaiaAP, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Nice little video-tutorial, thanks!
- EruLabs, on 10/30/2007, -0/+3XP build 2600... Still what MSDN recommends.
- p0ss, on 10/30/2007, -1/+4And on a related note, i spilt latte on my laptops cup holder, can anyone help me fix it?
- YouRookies, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4The better solution is to dual/triple boot. No need to fight over OSes.
- djGentoo, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Caps-lock is cruise control for n00b.
- azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+390% of Trendy Mac users don't use any of the software that makes Mac advantageous. Its just so they can show it off to their Yuppie friends until one of them who has a clue explains to them they are no better than people who drove PT cruisers. Using a mac for just internet is like having a date with Jessica Alba and refusing sex with her even though she was interested.
Wannabee yuppie scum. - sirhomer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Firefox has an extension like that as well. It makes the website think you are using IE. If that doesn't work you can also run Internet Explorer DIRECTLY on Linux (ie, no Windows), google ies4linux
- sonicvince, on 10/10/2007, -4/+7Lamest ***** video ever. Should have been titled "Even though 400 people did it before me, I'm gonna treat you as idiots and show you how to run XP in Ubuntu 'Teh P0\/\/ er of leenuxor!' with virtual box". And the music is horrible, and the machine on which he recorded this is about to die despite the 2 GB of RAM... way to go *****
- jsully, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Unfortunately it's not quite this easy to get the networking side of things going - it doesn't do bridged as well as VMWare. In the video he boots into Windows and pretends that it's usable - not exactly true. Here is a FAQ that I put together a few weeks ago to help get VirtualBox with Windows (or any OS) going with its own dedicated IP from your router or DHCP server with minimal effort.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=558971
This approach has a few advantages - you can then create a file share of your Ubuntu drive and mount it as a network drive in Windows, and other computers can access the Windows machine by its name and IP, just like it was an actual computer. Basically all you need to do is add a few lines to /etc/rc.local and then reboot - it can get a bit hairy though. Such is the way of the linux... cool, but hairy :) - azprofessional, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You'd be surprised with the misinformation out there about the whole process
- StealthTomato, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2...yeah, like a virus....
