- deadmoo, on 08/05/2008, -4/+12Microsoft didn't make Mono.
- CoolGoose, on 08/05/2008, -4/+11Am i one of the few sane people that doesn't care in what programming language / runtime is the program that i use coded ? I just love banshee and fspot is pretty decent and who can forget about tomboy. The thing is that most of the coded that was implemented in Mono is based on open specifications and if not do you really think that Microsoft will risk suing somebody at all ? IBM / Novell / Sun have a bunch of patents themselves and i don't think that Apple will be too shy to sue Microsoft if it comes to that :)
- ileftfark, on 08/05/2008, -4/+9- Mono is not Microsoft
- It's spelled "Microsoft"
- Mono was designed by Ximian as free software
- It is cross-platform
- Cross-platform leads to compatibility and standardization
- Aside from the apps you mentioned, removing it will also kill Gnome-Do, Beagle, and Unity (for gaming)
- Shut up - tnoy, on 08/05/2008, -3/+7"I have had a long-time problem with Mono and the Mono-based applications that, for reasons I do not understand, come installed by default with Ubuntu."
Mono comes installed by default becuse there are applications that need it, and some of them were chosen to be installed per defauly by the people behind Ubuntu.
If you don't like that Ubuntu comes with Mono, then don't use Ubuntu. Its really that ***** simple. There are distributions for the purist, and then there are distributions for the masses. The masses don't care if its open-source or not, if its GPLv2 or GPLv3, etc. The adoption of Linux is going to slow down if the community as a whole doesn't give up the whole childish notion that everything has to be completely Microsoft-free. - amfantasy, on 08/05/2008, -3/+7/facepalm
Just do whatever helps you sleep at night, I can't deal with you trolls anymore. - daftman, on 08/06/2008, -2/+5The article is about getting rid of Mono. Some people like Ubuntu but they don't like Mono apps that's included. This is no different an article such as "How to get rid of preinstalled crap with your Dell". I have no ***** why the some asshats decide to kick up a *****. May be the M$ shorthand cause the Microsoft fanboys to come out in force.
- tripzero, on 08/05/2008, -5/+6I suppose you don't use wine either? And I'm guessing all of your drivers are open source. All your hardware should probably have an open spec also shouldn't it. You probably don't use GNOME or KDE either, since many of the guidelines they follow in graphical user interface are idioms that microsoft introduced.
- n0odles, on 08/27/2008, -0/+1***** off fanboy trolls. I have a right to remove ***** applications.
- daftman, on 08/06/2008, -1/+2The whole point of Linux is about choice. If you don't like something then you have the choice to take it out. Ubuntu is not about all or nothing. Evolution comes with Ubuntu. I don't like it and I don't use it and I prefer Thunderbird, so I take it out. It's really that ***** simple.
Yes, the masses isn't going to give a ***** but this article obviously isn't intended for the mass. - inactive, on 08/11/2008, -2/+3-So, you're an idiot. There's a huge difference between Microsoft and Mono
-Only immature fanboys use the word "M$"
-.NET is patent-encumbered, not Mono
-Nor does Microsoft or Novell own the patent for Mono.
-Useless in what way?
-Nobody cares what you use or don't use. Others use those apps.
-He's the one actually providing intelligent points - daftman, on 08/06/2008, -2/+3How does removing Mono related to Microsoft suing everybody? I'm pretty damn sure that if Sun or IBM blantantly infringe Microsoft patent they will get sued.
Remember when Sun sued Microsoft for their implementation of Java? Java is open specification as well. Sun won. - daftman, on 08/06/2008, -2/+3> -So, you're an idiot. There's a huge difference between Microsoft and Mono
The heading implies that Mono is related to Microsoft. So basically what you said falls under the "no-*****-sherlock" category.
> Only immature fanboys use the word "M$"
It's shorthand, get the ***** over it. Only immature morons argue over a shorthand. LOL, OFMG, OGC
> .NET is patent-encumbered, not Mono
Look up the definition of patent, educate yourself and then comeback and talk
> Nor does Microsoft or Novell own the patent for Mono.
same as above.
> Useless in what way
Useless when it is dependence upon a single party to decide. So far Mono is working right now because Microsoft is helping the Mono community. If they decide to stop, that cross-platform is useless. The only thing that is open about .NET is the C# ecma standard. The .NET framework is NOT open.
> Nobody cares what you use or don't use. Others use those apps.
So ***** what? There are already better alternatives for those. Banshee? meet amarok. Beagle? Meet tracker.
> He's the one actually providing intelligent points
Trolling is not providing intelligent point.
- - daftman, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1He probably does and he probably doesn't. It doesn't matter and has no relevance to this article which is clearly a "how to".
What graphical user interface idioms that Microsoft introduced? - frontporsche, on 08/05/2008, -4/+4"The long list of libraries and things that just might break something else looked pretty scary to simply accept without question."
I've been removing mono from Ubuntu since 7.04, I think, and haven't had any problems. - frontporsche, on 08/05/2008, -4/+2> If you don't like that Ubuntu comes with Mono, then don't use Ubuntu. Its really that ***** simple.
Wrong, it's not all or nothing. Ubuntu is open source. If you don't like it and want to change it, go ahead. - daftman, on 08/06/2008, -4/+2- So?
- M$ is shorthand like lol. He understood it, you understood it so live with it.
- It's patent encumbered.
- So is java doesn't mean that Sun doesn't own patent for it
- blah blah. Cross-platform is useless when it is dependence upon .NET implementation. Mono is playing catch up to .NET and forever will be playing catchup. M$ isn't going to open source .NET
- I don't use Gnome-Do, Beagle is dropped in preference to trackerd and Unity? wtf?
- take your own advice
