- LastDitchHero, on 01/18/2009, -0/+10Some distros package this already such as Mandravia. I really wish Ubuntu would follow suit.
- Culyt, on 01/19/2009, -2/+11Windows Vista runs flawlessly?
- jackflap, on 01/19/2009, -2/+8Haha, check out the support forums for Samsung phones and syncing.. I get the impression that Vista isn't doing that great a job running flawlessly.
- PHiZ187, on 01/19/2009, -0/+6Article focuses on Windows Mobile 5 and 6.
- fireashes, on 01/19/2009, -0/+5Open source program called bitpim is a good one. It does not work with all the cdma phones but works with most of them. It works with most of the common phones.
- geekworking, on 01/19/2009, -0/+5FTA: "The problem is that the protocols and software used by most devices to talk with one another are closely guarded secrets, and anyone attempting to write an open source client needs to decode those protocols bit by bit, and then stay ahead of any changes."
The cell carriers will only give up control when somebody pries it from their cold, dead fingers. - smotpoker, on 01/19/2009, -0/+5It's been a while but, IIRC, I just had to add myself to the serial or usb group and fire up bitpim or kpilot etc.
Granted not every function worked [flawlessly] but I thought it was fairly impressive considering how these vendors close up their technology and I didn't perform any linux-compatibility research prior to acquisition (the devices were hand-me-downs). They still provided the most major/common functions people need - talhaasifdar, on 01/18/2009, -0/+4Awesome. I was looking for this one.
- MCJackhammer, on 01/19/2009, -2/+5You're still using a computer to play games?
Ever heard of Xbox? - Zounas, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3The power of Open-Source compiles you too!
- Wonderama, on 01/19/2009, -0/+3The power of open source compels you!
- Peterix, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2WM5, WM6 ... where's the WM2003? Seriously, last time I tried syncing my phone over USB, the sync program (Synce) bricked it. I had to reflash the firmware.

"You don't want to do that, dave" - KillerKellerjr, on 01/19/2009, -2/+4I'm sorry, this is horrible and crazy to have to go through that trouble to sync a Windows Mobile 6 phone to Ubuntu, I just want to install 1 program and the driver. I dual boot to Windows XP or my wife's Vista laptop to sync her Windows Mobile phone. All I did was install the software and I was able to get it to work first try. On Ubuntu, which I use all the time personally, I have tried many solutions and still can't get it to work, finally gave up and went with Windows as a solution. Come on Linux, support some of these mobile platforms more easily!
- WildTang3nt, on 01/19/2009, -0/+2Knowing them, it won't take long. This sounds like something Shuttleworth would want to put into Ubuntu. Maybe not the current development release, but possibly the next.
- pcghost, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1Yeah it must be the fault of Linux that it can't sync well with WINDOWS MOBILE. Microsoft wouldn't intentionally make it near impossible to use their devices with other operating systems would they? That would be uncompetitive and unethical. Not Redmond, never I say.
/S - hitforhelp, on 01/19/2009, -1/+2G1 already uses linux based system. open source ftw.
- KhaaL, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1Those who have a sonyericsson phone can use Myphoneexplorer under wine, works very well. Just follow the link and use the script:
http://www.fjsoft.at/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2838 - ryanarchy, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1The G1 isn't a perfect platform, but syncing is where it shines. All of your contacts are constantly synced with your gmail contacts. Make a change on the site and it pushes to your phone. Make a change on your phone and it's instantly reflected in gmail.
- FastZ, on 01/19/2009, -0/+1lol
- Rapax, on 01/19/2009, -4/+5Buried as inaccurate. Nothing ever works flawlessly in Vista, and if it does, it's still Vista, which in turns is a flaw itself.
- Zounas, on 01/19/2009, -2/+3Ignorance. Lose it.
- reddikilowatt, on 01/20/2009, -0/+1 It is. Just get a phone that has OBEX support in the Bluetooth stack. Bluetooth discovery and pairing isn't totally simple yet (but easier than all this), but syncing between my phone's contacts, calendar and task list is drop dead easy, just one click. I don't even have to plug anything in, just make sure the phone and laptop are in the same general area.
The hard part is finding a phone with a full BT stack (at least in the US). I have an unlocked Nokia N95, no carrier discount, no break on contract price, nothing. But not having to deal with the artificial limitations put in place by carriers make it worth it. - onyx187, on 01/25/2009, -0/+0If you just want to play with Linux on your phone (or computer) check the list of free shell providers and you'll soon have your new toy :)
http://on-net.info/shell-accounts/ - sanriver12, on 01/19/2009, -2/+1yes it does
- Azathothh, on 01/19/2009, -6/+2and why the ***** would i want that? Linux sucks.
- syntaxgs, on 01/19/2009, -8/+3Micro Soft Windows > Linux sorry at least it has game support =PO
- syntaxgs, on 01/19/2009, -6/+1those are SLOW =O
- DraconPern, on 01/19/2009, -7/+1Total fail for
1) TL;DR. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1386
2) No iPhone
3) No need for 3. - JustinNoland, on 01/19/2009, -14/+4Hey guys, here's an awesome guide I found for how to sync your mobile device with Windows Vista:
oh wait. You don't need a guide. All you do is plug your PDA in and everything works flawlessly. Weird.
