- Ouze, on 03/10/2009, -2/+32Dugg just for not being a 10-30 point list of "why you need to switch from _____________ to linux"
- Natilator3, on 03/09/2009, -4/+23What a great tutorial! It will definitely come in handy when the need arises to fix this stuff!
This comment is relatively pointless! - GeneralXod, on 03/10/2009, -1/+18Part of Linux's greatness is that fact that its problems are addressed openly and resolved collectively.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -3/+15I'm glad you added in parenthesis that you're a Vista lover. It lets us all know how cool you are. Keep it real, gangster.
- coldkill3r, on 03/10/2009, -2/+12As if any operating system doesn't have a set of its own common issues.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -2/+12the problem usually lies between the keyboard and the chair

... - nightowl512, on 03/10/2009, -0/+9dugg for demonstrating on a distro besides ubuntu
- dotRoot, on 03/10/2009, -3/+11Nice list, though I guess I've never dealt with any of these problems, other than a rogue process every once and awhile when I've misconfigured it.
As for the Windows Using Flamers, Windows is like the AOL of OS'. No freedom, not secure, not stable, overly expensive, and it seems a lot of morons use it. - PatrickBrown, on 03/10/2009, -4/+11Please stop. I get diarrhea from flamebait.
- Ouze, on 03/10/2009, -0/+7An operating system by default is complex, supporting millions of permutations of software and hardware of various qualities. Due to the limits of development/available test platforms/limited to no manufacturer support/man hours of QA and programming time available/ It is simply not possible to create an OS, on ANY platform, that will be bug/quirk free.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -4/+11No, this isn't Windows.
- saranagati, on 03/10/2009, -1/+7@medafighterx
what do you mean there's no official support? how do you think red hat, suse and all the other distros make their money?
As for standardization i'd say linux and applications written for linux follow more standards than windows and applications written for windows. Since MS is the only one creating an operating system using the ntdos kernel (or whatever its called now), they don't care about standardization.
You have no idea how wrong you are about a lack of professionally developed applications. It's more like there's a lack of commercial applications for home users. - smotpoker, on 03/10/2009, -0/+6"Are they are all not fixed with all of the wonderful, free support for Linux?"
Sure they are. The very support from which this article is derived. Mind you that the first problem actually caused by Windows. Further, most of the rest occur in Windows as well (albeit in a slightly different form that is never fully disclosed) yet the recommended resolution is always "Oh well, you have to format and reinstall I guess".
This de facto Windows resolution is just as much of, if not more so, a viable solution in Linux. However some of us more nerdy or compulsive users prefer to find the real problems and real solutions, especially when they are faster than reinstalling.
No one says Linux has no problems, only that it usually has fewer than Windows. And for the record, as a few other commenters have noted, most of these really aren't very common - feignNU, on 03/10/2009, -0/+5Well, the first "problem" is really more like an explanation on how the boot loader works. The second a howto for managing drivers. I'm sure you know how to do that in windows, if you're interested in learning about linux, then you should know how to do it there too. Another one is a quick tutorial on how to use "top", a process manager that kicks the crap out of the windows Task Manager. Yet another is an explanation of the tools for controlling your network interface.
This is a tutorial disguised as a troubleshooting guide. Unless you have a *very* old computer or an out of date copy of Linux, you're not likely to have to deal with these issues. Of course you might. But this article is more about equipping you with a toolset for dealing with problems in general than it is about solving any specific issue that you're likely to face. - ivanmarsh, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6Dugg up for being a straight up dealing with Linux page.
Dugg down for dealing with common problems that I haven't run into in 15 years of using Linux. - feignNU, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6pebkac. Definitely pebkac.
Instead of whining like a little girl and blaming the operating system, why don't you read this article and learn a little bit about how to troubleshoot problems. If you can show me that you have honestly and seriously tried to troubleshoot the problem to the best of your ability, and it actually turns out not to be your fault, I will not think it's your fault. - TheZorch, on 03/10/2009, -1/+6No OS is perfect, but some are better than others. Compared to all the problems that Windows has on top of its user un-friendly interface and constant vulnerability to viruses and worms I prefer Linux as the better alternative. Oh, and I'm forced to use Vista on one of my machines and I can safely say Linux beats it hands down.
- TCKC2C, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4I'm sure it's a good concept when it works but I've never had any useful answers to any of my problems from ubuntuforums.org, and I've tried quite a few times. I've since learned that going the IRC route to #kubuntu/#ubuntu is the way to go for troubleshooting.
- computershack, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4You need Vista then where there's next to nothing that isn't supported. And don't reply saying your Audigy is because Creative Labs don't even support their latest hardware, let alone obsolete stuff.
- legendxx, on 03/10/2009, -2/+6Look at all these people who think they're witty by saying switch to windows. Noone saw that coming with a title like this. Pure comedic gold!
/s - Malkor, on 03/10/2009, -0/+4My favorite is: READ WHAT YOU TYPE BEFORE SMASHING ENTAR.
Kinda disappointed to not see it there.. - stroudma, on 03/10/2009, -4/+8why is this getting dug down?
ubuntuforums is about the most helpful site on the internet. I think some very insecure Mac and Windows users are a bit spiteful they paid 80-120 dollars more for the same functionality - saranagati, on 03/10/2009, -1/+5@timsup
what you're doing wrong is you're trying to install it yourself when you don't know how to administer linux (let alone use it i'm sure). - JKAL, on 03/10/2009, -2/+65. After hours of installs and reboots and patches and more reboots, format drive and re-install Linux
- srg13, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3These are mostly the kind of problems that require registry changes and downloading 3rd party drivers and so on in Windows, which is something that I doubt most Windows users could do...
- jman82s, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4I don't know if I'd call throwing an overpriced mac out of a window profiting, exactly :p
- mahadiga, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4You may also chat with IM.Ubuntu@Gmail.Com and get real-time Ubuntu support.
- luchid, on 03/10/2009, -0/+3Try ubuntu netbook remix. Install takes about 10 minutes.
- smotpoker, on 03/10/2009, -1/+4@TimSup
Not playing something with audio or telling networkmanager what AP to connect to? - ism70605, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2It is amazing how much this delete system can be abused!
- Culero, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2I owe my many thanks to this site. It's helped my understanding of how to work with Ubuntu.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -3/+5LOL *****!
- int19h, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2"The function named : is a call to the function named : and another call to the function named :, but in the background. Now call :".
This results in : being called (ran) over an over again, each time starting itself in the background one more time.
Does the runtime increase like the fibonacci function? - srg13, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2This is a netbook we're talking about, right? I doubt that he's going to be able to run any 3D modelling/animation packages or games on it, regardless of the OS he is using... Same for virtual machines like VirtualBox or QEMU.
- MonkeyFarts, on 03/11/2009, -0/+2You know, the only people I have -ever- heard say that Linux is perfect have been, strangely enough, anti-Linux trolls.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2YOU LEET HAXOR, YOU!
- feignNU, on 03/10/2009, -2/+4Are you really going to pretend that the article didn't already deal with your silly little quip? Or maybe you just didn't read it...
- noerrorsfound, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2XP, even on new CDs where it comes with SP3, is pathetically unusable after a clean install. No ethernet drivers (seriously, no out-of-the-box support for WIRED connections?), no sound, not even display drivers that are good enough to let you move a window or scroll down a web page without lag.
- inactive, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2It's a fork bomb
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/understanding-bash-fo ... - MattBD, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2And by comparison editing the Windows registry is just sooooooo easy, I don't think.
If you compare most tasks on Linux with the counterparts on Windows, it's often easier on Linux. Configuration files are generally plain text, so if you have to delve under the hood it's a lot easier. And on a distro like Ubuntu you very rarely have to use the command line. - int19h, on 03/10/2009, -0/+2Just install Linux and skip Windows. If there's Windows applications you need, try Wine or run Windows in VirtualBox or Qemu. Unless you absolutely can't use Maya, XSI 3D or Lightwave (all three have native Linux versions), but really, really need 3D Studio Max, I don't see why you need Windows. Okay, maybe one of your 3D-games for Windows won't work either, but hey: A netbook isn't great for 3D-games either.
I can't think of a single reason for you to boot into anything else than Linux when you turn on your netbook. - int19h, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1srg13, I agree. I think it should work to some extent, though, some 3D-games run fine on for instance Acer Aspire One. Anyway - I guess my point was that he could just install Linux for the use I think he has in mind.
outlawrook, the software I mentioned is probably software you don't need to run or know about in connection with a netbook. You don't need to know about them in order to be able to use and enjoy Linux. Hope you find a good solution. :) - freezerburn666, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1it's a good list, looks good for beginners who may or may not ever encounter these issues. a good cheat sheet for anyone who needs a reminder.
- gavintlgold, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1Even though that command alone would likely do nothing, DO NOT ATTEMPT unless you want to erase all your data. You have been warned.
- psiloinc, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1Google works well to fix my linux problems.
- gavintlgold, on 03/10/2009, -1/+2Calculus is fun!
ƒ(x) = x^2
ƒ'(x) = 2x
Yay! - Azathothh, on 03/11/2009, -0/+1install windows
- srg13, on 03/10/2009, -0/+1That doesn't work in most operating systems, does it? I heard that most UNIX and UNIX-like OSs have a check that doesn't let you delete the root partition now.
