- kd420, on 02/23/2009, -0/+46I just tried this, watched some videos over SSH. It was horribly slow, so I'll have to try again at home. And for those wondering "Why the hell would you want to?" the answer is always the same, just to see if you can. It's why Linux is ported to everything, regardless of its usefulness.
- killdeer03, on 02/23/2009, -6/+44I'm a nerd and i watched hackers in ASCII, It still sucked.
- digitalpencil, on 02/23/2009, -0/+30how completely and utterly pointless...
* fires up terminal.. - keyvoh, on 02/23/2009, -0/+24Good news, everyone!
- AlanFang, on 02/23/2009, -1/+17Damn that looks like a rainbow ***** out a keyboard.
- santixx, on 02/23/2009, -1/+16Funny because "caca" in Spanish means *****.

- Avaseal, on 02/23/2009, -2/+11I'm just fine with watching my movies like a normal person, k thx.
- raustin, on 02/23/2009, -0/+9sounds like a great way to watch a movie...
- elfprince13, on 02/23/2009, -0/+8since VLC can input from a webcam, you can use this to take ASCII art photos of yourself.
- masterc, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7You can do this with VLC too. It's an option somewhere in the menu.
- speedracer350, on 02/23/2009, -0/+7This is much better than watching a movie in binary.
- kernalsanders, on 02/23/2009, -3/+10ascii pron?
- ThantiK, on 02/24/2009, -1/+7And every day, if you visit digg.com - you use linux. Linux on the average home users PC desktop is closer to 1%...the servers you use, and nearly everything you use to get to the internet, is linux in one way or another.
Suck on that microsoftie. - freezerburn666, on 02/23/2009, -0/+6so yeah,. VLC has this too if you choose the video output module to be ascii....
- lowtolerance, on 02/23/2009, -1/+6With some graphics cards(some older ATI cards are the only ones I know for sure), you can use CVIDIX to play movies directly on the console, while still having the CLI available as normal. It beats the hell out of ascii.
- buckrogers1965, on 02/24/2009, -1/+630% on Netbooks, according to MS.
- Foofoofoofoobar, on 02/23/2009, -1/+5Play Crysis, though, Windows can't do that either.
- lowtolerance, on 02/23/2009, -0/+4yeah, unfortunately.
- hamobu, on 02/23/2009, -2/+6Wow! Is there anything Linux can't do?
- lowtolerance, on 02/23/2009, -2/+6ummm... watching grass grow?
- Megatog615, on 02/23/2009, -1/+4better:
telnet towel.blinkenlights.nl - Technophobia, on 02/25/2009, -0/+3They are trashing trashing our rights
- Avaseal, on 02/23/2009, -1/+4your comment in conjunction with the article made me think of this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06WVIzgsMvc - ozziek, on 02/23/2009, -4/+7This post does nothing to help the Linux cause.
- bluechild, on 02/24/2009, -1/+4Coolness == zero :P
- dremspider, on 02/23/2009, -1/+3Fedora 10:
Change
"sudo apt-get install mplayer"
to:
yum install mplayer
The rest of the steps are identical. If you are better then all the Ubuntu users out there then you should have been able to figure this out easily enough. Why is it that people who use something other then Ubuntu feel the right to be self righteous? This coming as a Linux admin who deals with Red Hat all day. I love Ubuntu, it works well (though I am currently using Fedora myself). - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2We've been doing his in linux witth AAlib for 14 years. Get bent.
- thePTS, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2agreed, 2 girls 1 cup looks like crap under this display.
- IamNomad, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2HACK THE PLANET!!!!
- Technophobia, on 02/25/2009, -0/+2ummm... watching binary?
- 3MM3, on 02/23/2009, -0/+2It'll be slow if the terminal is too big. Make it nice and small and watch something you downloaded off of youtube and it's actually watchable....
- ldog, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Name change?
They know perfectly well what it means. Look at the logo on their site. http://caca.zoy.org/wiki/libcaca
And I love the license that they chose for it. The WTFPL - 0tis, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2(I did)
- Carnil, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2Wohooo, finally I can watch those youtube videos everybody is talking about with lynx!!
- ThantiK, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2OGC
- mabl, on 02/24/2009, -0/+2The best one ist still the good old BB (http://aa-project.sourceforge.net/bb/)
- raydeen, on 02/24/2009, -2/+4Hackers is frigging brilliant. Angelina Jolie, Matthew Lillard, Penn Jillette...the awesomeness is over 9000.
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1For good fun back in the day we used to play Quake (the original) using aalib as a renderer to the terminal. The trick was to reduce the font size and maximize the window to get it resolute enough to tell what the hell was going on :)
- SangekiRein, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1Eh... pretty useless indeed.
*dugg/watching family guy in terminal - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1Yes it is. Color ASCII.
- raydeen, on 02/24/2009, -1/+2Ah, says you. :D It was a fun movie.
- giveitall23, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1it also makes porn look like *****!
- inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1It should be noted that it takes a beast of a machine to translate AVI to color ASCII at higher resolutions, so it's likely that the audio will begin to lag before long. In any case, at higher res, here's a screenshot... of Grommit from "A Grand Day Out"...
http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll274/Zenham/Sc ... - thePTS, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1ummm... watching movies in 24bpp?
- WakeRider, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1I got it working! There is no point to it but it looks awesome. If you stand right back from the monitor, the picture becomes clearer. The one problem I had with it is that I had no Play / Pause / any buttons whatsoever. Does anybody know what commands I can type to bring up the M Player buttons with it?
- Avaseal, on 02/24/2009, -0/+1even better: ascii SRCAMBDLE pron
..get ready to seizure your ass off!! - inactive, on 02/25/2009, -0/+1It also doesn't blend.
