- pufuwozu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11It could be the same with Windows. Say http://inkscape.org/ didn't provide Windows binaries but they still provided compilation options. No difference.
It just happens more frequently with Linux because there's no one distro that consumes 50% of the Linux market, thus no standard package system. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11I install software that doesn't come with my distro ALL THE TIME. No problemo.
Actually most of the time I won't use the packages that are on synaptic or preinstalled because I prefer betas or SVN.
And Thus I provide my own ***** blog article called: "How to Love Free Software in 3 Easy Steps"
1. Download development software
2. Compile and Run
3. ??
4. Fun! (sorry no profit in OSS) - sharkscott, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Instead of being constructive about it they just created a flame bait article.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I guess repositories are simply being ingnored in this argument.
Free Agent: How to Compile Free Software Apps
,----[ Quote ]
| Let me start with a controversial statement: Installing
| new software is almost always easier on Linux than on
| Windows or the Mac OS.
`----
http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127601-c,linux/article.html
Take this for example.
,----[ Quote ]
| apt-get install kerry
|
| Phew, that was tricky. I can see why those windows guys find Linux
| sooo difficult. It is waaaaay easier to go to some random website,
| download an installer, pray that it is safe, double-click on the
| installer, click "Yes, I do agree to all of these outrageous license
| terms and I don't mind that it includes spyware, and adware", click
| Next, Next, Next, and finally reboot a couple of times.

Synaptic-based distros would also be a good example. - sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"I guess repositories are simply being ingnored in this argument."
Indeed. Sort of like in the CNR articles where commentors seemed to think it was either CNR or the command line, the author of this article seems to think its either compling completely from source or the a package the comes with the distro, a false dilemia. Compiling completely from source can be a pain (fooling with libs..missing this lib - get that, this other libs is the wrong version, etc ), but that is not the only other option. - CuCullin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This article is nothing more than trolling.
1) Mention the package. None has been mentioned, so why should I believe the situation? I haven't run into this issue.
2) MANY packages build nicely. If they didn't we wouldn't have distributions - especially not LFS type stuff out there.
3) Maybe the *reason* the apps weren't included with distributions, or available from repositories, is that *they don't work well*. As in, they don't build nicely due to poorly written code.
4) I fail to see how I could hate free software because *one* app wouldn't build. In the long and short of it, its no different with that package not compiling than not having it available at all. And if it is a matter of poorly written code, or a few missing packages - a little effort and now you have something you didn't before.
Big f'ing deal.
Buried for stupidity. - fireglow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2rtfm. thats all there is to it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2free software = not done for you smart person
- Curufir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Far more fun to try and uninstall something you previously installed from source without a package manager.
- cantormath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The author is just a FUD spreading windows advocate.
- Ademan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Eh, i have 3 or 4 non-standard (see: 3rd party) repositories in my sources.list and i've yet to encounter a problem with apt. In fact my system is quite peachy, I've got a repository for wine, one for beryl, one for NVIDIA drivers, and the malteo and seveas repositories. I don't understand what gun i'm pointing at ubuntu's head.
- oliwer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is indeed written by a noob.
If softwares are provided as source code, there is a good reason for it. Compiling a software yourself lets you choose options and optimization methods. That the superiority of source over binary. And if the author of the software knows how to properly use autotools, then compilation is a piece of cake.
Once again, GNU/Linux and Windows do not have the same objectives at all ! Complexity is a consequence of freedom. If you don't like it, then don't use it. - mattlee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0make uninstall is so hard ;)
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Being constructive isn't something they teach you in US K-12 school. At least it hasn't been. Don't know what they're teaching children these days, but I don't think it's covered in No Child Left Behind.
- sanguinemoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"So unless (until?) a common packaging format is created, and every distribution and developer adopts it (and I do mean every one) we’re never gone win this battle. Makes you wonder if it’s worth winning..." I see, so each and every single develop must drop using .deb and rpm, etc and switch to a new system? That makes complete nonsense
- Dan1elle, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3so true.
- themacmeister, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0When there are repositories that don't contain conflicting packages, we may have a better life, but until then, installing a single non-standard package from, or setting non-standard repositories in Apt (etc.) can be like holding a loaded gun to your Linux distro.
If it weren't for the politically correct who won't include closed source (or even questionable) drivers or codecs in their distros, the world would be a happier place... - hdante, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1The article is half accurate, half inaccurate. Why is it inaccurate: "try to install a software from source in Windows". You'll probably need a $ 1.000,00+ compiler before doing this, or, if you're lucky, messing with cygwin. Why is it accurate: there are a couple of huge incompatible package systems mostly replicating each other. There are some solutions for this, someone already mentioned CNR. There's also autopackage:
http://autopackage.org/
and klik:
http://klik.atekon.de/ - cquinnd, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Unless people take Linspire up on their offer to expand the use of CNR with other distros.
