- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -0/+26I'm in the right place then. I'm saving up to be Jewish.
- BinaryFragger, on 06/26/2009, -0/+23Article on a single page:
http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6738 - Manther, on 06/26/2009, -5/+24Isn't that true of ANY "desktop"?? Ya know, given that in order to get a computer to do anything, you need to give it commands??
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -3/+21crawl back into the glory hole you came out of
- MrSpontaneous, on 06/26/2009, -0/+14This article is crap as far as KDE customization goes... the author seems to think that CF is the only solution to compositing in Linux, while it isn't. KWin (the KDE window manager), provides support for compositing and other bling with better integration with the desktop ecosystem (although it is lacking in features/level of customization when compared to CF).
Additionally, he claims that the plasma shell is not available for other environments - not true. With the correct dependencies filled, you can run plasma within a Gnome/XFCE/etc environment.
That, and why do all of the themes shown look like crap? The author would be best served by showing the various sleek and nice to look at themes out there. The ones shown are toy-like - TBagwell, on 06/26/2009, -1/+14seems like you can fail right here though
- postaldave, on 06/26/2009, -2/+13yeah but slashdot is rocking now that all the moonbats and hello kitties came to digg. thank you digg!
- badfish0116, on 06/27/2009, -0/+11I just installed Compiz on Ubuntu and it does have some insane features... the water effects is one of the coolest things I've ever seen....

- ukblacknight, on 06/27/2009, -1/+10"but dugg because more exposure can only be good."
- x713, on 06/26/2009, -0/+9I love my handcuffs nice and shiny. They are also great for the environment!
- phatbyte, on 06/26/2009, -1/+10Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Linux, I'm using Linux since 1997 (mostly as server, not desktop) , but I can certainly say that Linux desktop has very much improved over time.
But, and this a big but, Linux desktop will never take off as long as this all-over-you-eye-candy exists. I mean, it's cool to change the look & feel of you desktop, but look at OSX and Windows, you can't change it (dramatically like in gnome/kde) and I don't see any mac user complaining. Why ?
Because they have a standard good looking UI (mostly osx and win7) and because you as a linux developer should focus more on creating a more usable, don't-get-on-my-away interface and applications. And I thinks this is the major flaw in Linux desktop world. You have thousands and thousands of really great programmers creating gnu desktop software, but it's seems to me that they don't give a rat's ass about design UI, it's pretty messed up, and on top of that you have this "skins" that make it even more fugly.
I mean, for every Linux dist out there you have a complete different look & feel even though they run over gnome and kde.
So to me, and this is only my opinion, Linux should have only one desktop manager, and it should have a smart , cohesive and a standard UI. So programmers and users should focus more on creating and using applications than to worry about skins and superficial things like that. - bugwayji, on 06/26/2009, -0/+8 Linux is so much more customizable than Windows or Macs. I think maybe the 'old school' boys and girls need to check out the new distro's. I use Ubuntu, and always listen to "wish my computer did that". Now, I know it's not the computer, but the software, but eh they are users.
What my kids really like, is that I can put full length movies on their cell phones to watch. Or they can use Avogadro to build and see chemical molecules and manipulate them. They also want to know how to get their Windows, to close and fly away like a paper airplane. - MrSpontaneous, on 06/26/2009, -1/+9Because its antithetical to what linux stands for. Rather than force one experience upon users, let users choose what they want.
- ashgtx, on 06/27/2009, -0/+7A lot of Linux articles are getting buried these days. Something's wrong.
- x713, on 06/26/2009, -0/+7He forgot to mention that you can install google gadgets as well now.
- RPGmaster, on 06/27/2009, -0/+6Yes, via WINE or a VM.
Can we please stop this meme? - psykid24, on 06/27/2009, -0/+6ahh yes, just like windows and osx.
- bsmang, on 06/26/2009, -1/+7Delicious.
- sloppychris, on 06/26/2009, -0/+6You didn't actually quote anything.
- MrSpontaneous, on 06/27/2009, -0/+6Why should they? Different companies and different groups will build distributions that will suit them and their users, making the choice for their users. The whole notion of "selling" Linux to the average user is silly.
- YourNameHere1, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5I agree (not the Enlightenment part). What's with the Vista blue/green color? That was so ugly. Linux can be made to be the best looking desktop around but this theme just made it look like a cheap knockoff of Vista.
- vulcanius, on 06/26/2009, -0/+5How much is your nose implant going to cost wcbb?
- inactive, on 06/26/2009, -5/+10What happened to the wonderful variety of themes provided in Windows XP i.e Silver,Olive and Blue

This doesn't seem to be a problem with smartphones. In fact let's take a look at the different interfaces available:
Symbian
Android
Palm Pre/Web OS
iPhone
Blackberry
WinMobile
Within this list there are also several different interfaces available for certain models plus there are even more minor players with custom interfaces that I didn't mention. Are all of these people "confused" about the OS? - warp99, on 06/27/2009, -0/+5The constant complaint about Linux not being polished right out of the box is being addressed by Canonical, parent company of Ubuntu. In fact Matt Asay got to look at this first hand:
"I got a sneak peek at a future Ubuntu release while at dinner with Canonical founder Mark Shuttleworth Wednesday night, and it was gorgeous. Mac freak I may be, but the day Canonical releases that version of Ubuntu is the day my devotion to Apple will be severely tested.
Yes, it's that good."

UI design as people suggest is not being ignored and is a central part of Canonical's push of Ubuntu onto the desktop. - vulcanius, on 06/26/2009, -0/+4Not too shabby of an article either.
- antdude, on 06/27/2009, -0/+41 print page: http://www.maximumpc.com/print/6738 (will bring a print prompt).
- pokobunt, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4No, we shouldn't have one desktop environment. There are other things about why people use DE's than the look and feel. Some people want a lightweight DE that doesn't take up much space on the CPU (like me).
- Sealbhach, on 06/27/2009, -0/+4Yes, that's how computers work. You only just got that did ya?
- Sealbhach, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3Maybe there's some truth in this: http://blogs.computerworld.com/digg_dug_buried_how ...

Except the users you mentioned will just use the default desktop on the distro they choose. - pokobunt, on 06/27/2009, -0/+3Microsoft lackeys have been on Digg a lot these days.
- svensksvamp, on 07/04/2009, -0/+3Is there anyone out there that actually think this looks good?
http://dl.maximumpc.com/galleries/linuxgui/emerald ... - specialK16, on 07/06/2009, -0/+3As a linux user I disagree. CF is nothing close to "don't-get-on-my-away" unless you want it to be. For instance, I can have 3 virtual desktops, and see all of them at the same time using Expo, or see all my windows through the Scale plugin. I can group apps, move them and resize them at the same time, or just place them all in on same place and use tabs to cycle through them. If you like messing around, you have an enormous amount of ***** you can tweak to make it work like you want it to work. This is what linux has, freedom to make it work however the ***** you want. This is what Windows or OS X doesn't have.
And I don't use Linux to be a hurr freedom gpl microsoft sucks sealot. I use it because I like it. - Tyr7BE, on 07/05/2009, -0/+2It really would have been nice if they had used a good looking theme for the screenshots in this article, and fixed their font rendering. Using something that looks good when you're demonstrating how good it looks...that really does drive the point home.
- mikedoth, on 07/04/2009, -0/+2Slashdot readers always seem to be more interesting... maybe it's time to go back.
- 3leggedHorse, on 06/26/2009, -1/+3CF still kicks ass for productivity and eye candy.

Thank you! I have been pro-handcuff for years now, but people keep saying "Put your pants on" and "Why are you at denny's anyway".
Handcuffs forever! - dragossh, on 06/27/2009, -0/+2I hope it's ready before it becomes irrelevant. Would make a good OS for netbooks too.
- oobuntu, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1what's the guy talking about? sneak peek? the karmic alpha's are out there for download if you wanna try. unless canonical have something up their sleeve they haven't told us about? considering their rate of progress and the recent intel driver shambles (breaking performance and 3d for most laptops) i would be very surprised..
- warp99, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1I believe he's talking about 10.04 since Shuttleworth has a usability group working strictly on the interface:
http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/2009/06/ca ...
I did find one of their reports:
http://www.slideshare.net/fytech/ubuntu-usability- ...
I also read somewhere that UI changes were slated for 10.04 since they couldn't make it into 9.10. This is what Matt Asay must be talking about. - secrity, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1That's odd. I am a UNIX/Linux admin and use Linux workstations to remotely administer the boxes. I never HAVE to use a command line to admin my workstations. I use the command line because from experience I know that it is easier to vi a config file than to use a GUI to make the change.
I also have a company issued Windows XP laptop, and I get very frustrated when trying to configure something because I know how much easier it would be to vi a config file than to it is to ***** with the Windows GUI or the registry. - ukblacknight, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1Isn't KDE 4.3 out now? Or at least, I know that 4.2 is, and is supposed to be much more stable than 4.1.
- blipblopblip, on 06/27/2009, -0/+1Yep, just waiting on the EEE Wifi Driver then It's going on my 901.
