- blah247, on 05/06/2009, -1/+16I use it... I also use Windows... AND I don't believe in Jesus... now what?
- twiztidsinz, on 05/06/2009, -2/+15"I would suggest the true value regarding Linux desktops to be around 10% - 25%"
lol - twiztidsinz, on 05/06/2009, -0/+13Boots fighting boots
- tuxchick, on 05/06/2009, -3/+15Yes, and also the relentless Microsoft-fueled attacks on Linux and FOSS. If linux is so insignificant, what are they so worried about?
- alm0, on 05/06/2009, -2/+12I'm one of them - Ubuntu 9.04
- decx, on 05/06/2009, -1/+11i say it's 6
- CoD4, on 05/06/2009, -2/+11Not enough
- sigmaman2, on 05/06/2009, -3/+11Click on My Profile at the top of the page.
Then click the Settings tab, then click on Customize Topics in the right-hand menu.
Under the Technology heading, you will see Linux/Unix (the 6th one down) Uncheck that checkbox, then click Save Changes.
You're welcome. - pinguz, on 05/06/2009, -1/+9So is it year of the Linux desktop again?
- freeridstylee, on 05/06/2009, -2/+8Does it count if I have it on my laptop?
- Thrawny, on 05/06/2009, -3/+9No more then maybe 5%. But this number is nearly impossible to find out. Alot of linux users will duel boot windows and linux. Unless we surveyed every user, we will never really know
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -3/+9I counted 42.
- Rockyn, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5My guess is 6.237%
- TypeEE, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5I think google would have a very accurate number, google analytic has OS statistics, if google release the number for google.com, that should be quite accurate.
- evilgourmet, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5ok 2 out of three ain't bad....
Dugg for not believing in Jesus. :) - mayavi, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5least bothered bout what the total number of linux users are ...
the fact is ..i'm using linux (ubuntu) on my desktop .. and its serving my purpose to fullest extent ... and I'm happy ..
let people count numbers and play with it ... - bytor4232, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5Three. I'm 100% Ubuntu baby!
- RetepNamenots, on 05/06/2009, -0/+5I guess if Google put out their user stats... I'm sure that most people use Google, so if you could track unique users with the past 12 months or so that would give you a fairly accurate representation....
- FritoPendejo, on 05/06/2009, -1/+65% of what? Also, how does "duel boot" work? It sounds exciting.
- schestowitz, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4“There's a lot of Linux out there -- much more than Microsoft generally signals publicly -- and their customers are using it...”
--Paul DeGroot, a Directions On Microsoft analyst (2008) - cshelton13, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Do you use your laptop? If so, then yes.
- FritoPendejo, on 05/06/2009, -1/+5But.... Linux!!
- ethana2, on 05/06/2009, -2/+6If you wish you used a certain OS but currently do not because of application compatibility, consider switching your browser useragent to the OS you wish you were using, to garner support for it in online statistics.
- sibeth, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4according to diggers, every year is the year of the linux :P
- v4vishal, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4Yeah, but the question here is not the same.
- sigmaman2, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4One big issue with counting Linux users is that it's often the OS of choice for people that don't want to be counted. Linux users will simply install and use their OS, rather than unlock it with a code and register it with their home address.
With Windows, Mac, and other proprietary OSes, the purchase can be traced back to a person with a credit card number, registration number, or something similar. On Linux, there is no person-to-installation correlation. That's why it's so hard to count them
And even if this tool were used by all Linux users (and there's no chance of that happening), it wouldn't count the standalone installations on PCs without internet access. - harlowsmonkeys, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4It's funny. Biologists regularly are able to make good estimates of how many bears are in a given forest, or how may crabs are at the bottom of a given sea, and things like that, and no one raises an eyebrow. But trying to get a good estimate Linux users is somehow supposed to be an intractable problem.
- Nightfall, on 05/06/2009, -0/+4According to "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy" the answer is 42.
- DarkXDragon, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3How can people digg down the Spanish Inquisition? No one expects them.
- BuriedAgain, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4If you want to try out Linux, the safest bet is to get Sun VirtualBox; it's free and you don't have to compromise your functional computing environment (i.e. you won't lose Windows or OSX or have downtime while installing).
- a2fan, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3OK, thats two of you....
- inactive, on 05/06/2009, -1/+4The biggest roadblock for Linux is recognition. Microsoft and Apple spend millions on advertising, while commoners have never heard of Linux. Personally, I have installed Linux on my parents computer and they have had no problems using it. In fact, they find it easier than the Windows install I erased. If Linux could just get it's name out better to the 'mainstream', it would dominate.
- Smegzor, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3Hmm.. well since 11 of you suck I'll do it myself..
NOBODY expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... Our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our *three* weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our *four*...no... *Amongst* our weapons.... Amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again. - sjaskow, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3You could always download an appliance from the VMWare applicance marketplace: http://www.vmware.com/appliances/ that has drives and reinstall your favorite OS top of it.
- captinherb, on 05/07/2009, -0/+3Don't know why your being dugg down. That's absolutely true. I run Xubuntu exclusively and look for software that runs on Linux and am happy as hell when I find some. But then it's a damn tar ball. Ok, I can deal with that. But then it's command line only, no GUI, while the windows version has GUI and is easier to install. I think Linux is rock solid but without a large breadth of software it will be harder to get people to switch which means less software, etc.. Frankly most people don't pay that much attention to the OS and use it as a vehicle for the software they want to run and without the software...
- gavintlgold, on 05/06/2009, -0/+3He's talking about a new tool that can be used to discover the general amount of linux users. He's not complaining or trying to convince anyone.
- RetepNamenots, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Mine does, yes.
- gavintlgold, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3If developers know the numbers they're dealing with they will be more likely to write code for Linux, which in turn brings a larger userbase, etc.
- laelfrog, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2There are lots of us who run Linux on the Desktop/laptop :-) I've been full-time on Linux for over a year now and haven't wanted to turn back. Linux++; Windows--;
- midtown, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2Why wouldn't a distro just count unique IPs (or IP hashes) that hit their update repositories? You might lose a few percent to users of mirrors, but popular mirrors would probably contribute their statistics anyway. This method has some slight inaccuracies, as anything will, but it seems simple and accurate at the distro level.
- dawheelo, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3Delusion, party of 1, your table is ready.
- KibibyteBrain, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3That is severely flawed logic. MSFT and APPL are scared of Linux because of its potential to compete against them, not because of its current competitive status.
- twiztidsinz, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3+1 for funny
-1 for tinypic - Narishma, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2It's different for every person. For some it's not yet the year of Linux, for others it has been for a decade.
- whoreable, on 05/06/2009, -1/+3+1
- ratrip, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2*** When you turn a rehashed OS into a religion, you are going to create some strong enemies ***
The same feeling I have with that Monster of Frankenstein / VMS + OS/2 hybrid called Windows NT.
*** and I'll gladly fight along side them. ***
Same as me. Down with the predator MS!
What color of body bag would you like? - gavintlgold, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2Did you read the end of the article? If distro's adopt this little daemon, there will be a good way to track the amount of desktop users.
- Feldon, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2Fedora and Ubuntu. i only use Windows at work becuz I'm force to.
- Leopards, on 05/07/2009, -0/+2My thoughts exactly! We would lose a few people that are on dial-up and installed from "Gift" install disks, but but "I think" most Linux users keep their systems pretty much up to date!
- RetepNamenots, on 05/06/2009, -0/+2I *think* that the majority of dual-screen issues were fixed in the latest release of Ubuntu. :)
Edit: Of course your mac won't have any problems - OS X was built from the ground up to run on that specific hardware. It's like if I mass produced a computer that I knew ran a Linux distro 100% properly, and then sold it - you wouldn't expect any problems... -
