I fully expect your next comments to be from Linux now - greedyemu, on 01/15/2009, -16/+31I'll stick with Windows 7 thanks.
- elislider, on 01/15/2009, -0/+11note that nowhere on the list is "drop out of community college"
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -1/+11I need a Pentium to run Linux? Here I've been using a Turion all this time like a fool!
- frascellyboy273, on 01/15/2009, -6/+16when linux can sync my iphone im all in!
- dcstriker, on 01/15/2009, -7/+17Or you stay on your current platform and save your afternoon for some real action!!!!
- Coven, on 01/15/2009, -2/+11I just took the HDD out of my old linux box, popped it into my current computer and installed Windows 7 on it. I'm not sure I'll be ready to go back to XP in July. Less than an hour on it and I'm pretty much sold.
- spinalcracker, on 01/15/2009, -5/+12Here is an extreme (highly unlikely, but plausible tidbit to think on), situation... Microsoft goes the way of Enron or other big companies no one ever expects to die ever ever ever... all windows people know how to use is Microsoft software. For those going on and on about windows 7, there are only a small few that have actually tried installing Ubuntu 8.10... give it an honest shot before flaming and fanboyism.. you may be surprised... and you never know.. one day way down the road... understanding Linux and the concept of Open software may really benefit you at home and in the office. Things change. Now bury me, because to you the internet IS internet explorer and computers ARE windows, and a word processor IS part of MS Office... without Microsoft... computers are useless to you. lol
- spinalcracker, on 01/15/2009, -1/+8Amarok > iTunes for listening to music
Steam runs in WINE but is being ported to linux right now to run natively
Photoshop up to CS3 runs in WINE
Wear my shoes lawlz... WEAR THEM!!! - Cheezian, on 01/14/2009, -9/+16Is there anything anyone can say that's bad about Ubuntu that actually makes sense?
And I don't mean reasons that it's bad for a particular purpose. - rolf, on 01/15/2009, -5/+11Nothing bad about Ubuntu at all. I know several business that will migrate to it completely the instant Wine runs some key programs (or those programs claim Wine 1.x compatibility.)
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -1/+7I'm thinking about getting into Linux, or at least running it on top of my normal OS as a Virtual Machine. I get the best of both worlds, Mac and Linux! This was very interesting to read.
- dsoltesz, on 01/15/2009, -1/+7I'm with frascellyboy273. The Gimp SUCKS (yes, I am yelling). I've tried it many times, and I get tired of explaining this to fanboys who think redeye removal is advanced graphics work. When I finally moved from Windows to Linux on the desktop, I still had to have VMWare for Photoshop, Illustrator, XMLSpy, etc. Linux may be ready, but the apps aren't ready for certain types of power users.
- javaroast, on 01/15/2009, -0/+6Digg is a site to share content, so a story on digg doesn't have to be news.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -1/+7Download Sun Java's VirtualBox app. It can run other operating systems as virtual machines on your normal operating system. Or download WINE, which lets many Windows apps run on Linux.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -3/+9Get WINE app or Virtualbox app, and you will be able to run Office 07/08.
- inactive, on 01/15/2009, -2/+8If you would RTFA, you would notice how it's about migrating your _business_ to Linux.
- TrancePhreak, on 01/15/2009, -1/+7I had some special things installed that required me to build my own kernel. Every time the kernel is upgraded you have to manually configure those again. It's quite annoying.
- adkenc, on 01/15/2009, -0/+5imho anything is better than itunes. i've been using amarok and love it. i also just installed songbird (which is cross platform) and it scanned my entire library much faster. amarok took about a day to import my library, and songbird just did it in about 30 minutes. i have yet to test the ipod plugin, but hopefully i'll now be able to change up the tunes from linux.
i have no idea what steam is, but i don't play games. hopefully something can take its place natively. i've never quite gotten the hang of wine. virtual machines are sometimes an option, but for games i imagine there would be a big lag. i use virtual machine for netflix streaming. it runs decent, but tends to have stuttering. however, a recent update has shown great improvement, so i am sure in the future this will not matter so much. supposedly netflix may have native linux streaming in september 2009, because the equivalent to silverlight for linux (i think its called moonlight) should be ready by then. not sure on that though...
lastly, photoshop. i love me some photoshop cs3. since moving to opensuse, i've been using gimpshop (a modified gimp) its a modification that makes gimp look and feel more like photoshop...except its like photoshop 7. in windows, ps7 is actually my favourite for older machines, but yes, i do feel like i'm missing the advancements between ps7 and cs3. i often just remind myself that at least i'm getting what i pay for...and i'm able to edit without pirating or "hacking" it. haven't tried cs3 in virtualbox yet, but i imagine it wouldnt have issues like netflix.
all in all, maybe you cant run favourite programs natively, but often there are better alternatives out there, or efforts made to run the programs you want which may be in need of your testing help. - LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -1/+6I'll say it once, and I'll say it again....
WINE app can run many "Window's only" apps, on Linux. VirtualBox and other virtual machine apps can run multiple operating systems on a base OS. - mynameistux, on 01/15/2009, -2/+7The best way to move to linux
Switch to VLC, open office, gimp, insert opensource equivilant to software you were using before here, while you are still on windows.
This means that when you get to linux, you already know what most of the software is, and have a good idea how to use it. - synergye, on 01/15/2009, -1/+6CS4's getting closer and closer to fully working in Wine. Just wait a little while, or go back to CS3 or CS2 (so long as you don't need GPU accelerated graphics in PS or illustrator).
- RobotBuddha, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Sound. In the past few years I've only had sound working perfectly for a few brief windows. Everything was working fine in ubuntu for a brief spell, and then came pulse.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4I do like to eat apples...
- Jeremy23, on 01/16/2009, -0/+4When "Linux" can sync your iPhone? It's not "Linux" that does the syncing -- it's the application software.
What you really should be saying is "when Apple ports iTunes to Linux, I'm in." Which is, basically, never. (But never say never.) - Devotia, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Well you'll have to wait 20 more minutes like the rest of us.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4So, you don't call running antivirus programs, defragging your hard drive, cleaning up malware, defending against spyware and cleaning the registry as well as the cache work?
- TrancePhreak, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Yes digg me down and provide no salvation. That will show him how much the GNU/Linux community loves us.
- LoudMusic, on 01/15/2009, -3/+7I just formatted my hard drive and installed Ubuntu. Nothing quite like a fresh start, eh?
- psicolonia, on 01/15/2009, -1/+5dreamweaver runs on wine.
- MattBD, on 01/15/2009, -0/+4Virtualbox really does work well with Ubuntu. Once you install the Guest Additions and set up a shared folder it really works well.
Also, Xubuntu (based on Ubuntu but uses the lightweight Xfce desktop) seems to look quite good on a Mac. - BungDiddy, on 01/15/2009, -3/+7make all Windows games compatible and millions will switch.

- 321654987, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3honestly i didnt know that was possible
- javaroast, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3This is a totally appropriate story for the Linux section of digg. I can't say that the article was a great article, but I really don't have a problem with them showing up in the Linux/Unix section.
- novalux, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3Hahaha, for anyone who doesn't get it:
http://digg.com/linux_unix/Ubuntu_Causes_Girl_To_D ... - D3koy, on 01/15/2009, -6/+9Look, I use Linux. I get some people like Windows. I get a lot of people who use Linux want people to use Windows. Why do these stories still have to be on Digg? Everyone who was considering switching has either done so, or decided not to switch.

- javaroast, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3... if you are a pirate.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/15/2009, -2/+5Actually, he made a good point and he even stated it well. You, on the other hand, compared a computer to a toaster.
- Giga, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3The base system (such as init scripts) aren't as nice to deal with as other systems (such as gentoo or arch). That's pretty much the only complaint I have with the debian based systems.
- LonelyTylenoL, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3I know, I already downloaded it. It is nice and smooth, I was just saying lol... goodness gracious!
- dsoltesz, on 01/15/2009, -2/+5Open Office is one of the few replacement apps I've been completely happy with. Heck, we even got mom-in-law off of WordPerfect and cranking on OO when her Mac got upgraded.
- MattBD, on 01/15/2009, -0/+3True - both Linspire and Xandros aped Windows's interface and they both used KDE. IceWM could also do the job - looks like Windows, it's easy to configure, and it works well on the Eee PC. Just need to add a few utilities to make it easy to use and configure it to resemble Windows as closely as possible, and many people would probably never notice the difference.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/15/2009, -2/+4Clearly you haven't realized that one of the most fundamental practices for any good business is to utilize all free tools before going out and purchasing one. In other words, spend your money where you have to and only where you have to. That's kind of the reason the economy is shot, too much unnecessary spending.
- ace214, on 01/15/2009, -0/+2The VirtualBox addons are DKMS modules now so they are loaded automatically... No need to recompile your kernel at all.
- tmsbrdrs, on 01/15/2009, -1/+3@IronDonut
The proper way to put that is "Linux doesn't work for me, but it may work for you." Everyone is different. You like your Windows world, stick with it, that works for you. There are lots of businesses for which Linux based systems actually work very very well, often better than Windows. For example, Linux runs hardware more efficiently, this means that computers running smaller processors with less RAM get more power under Linux than under Windows. As for your arguments for the applications you need, what exactly do you need Photoshop for in your job? I realize some jobs require it, but in your particular case, why exactly do you need it and only it?
Quickbooks, read this, then tell me it doesn't work. This is an old article but that just means someone's figured out how to make it work better or at worst, it still works the same. http://www.desktoplinux.com/articles/AT2282537026. ...
Photoshop just depends on exactly what you need it for. Most likely you just don't know how to use it to get it to do what you need. I don't either but there are plenty of tutorials to teach you.
Shipping management just means you'd need to figure out exactly what you need and then figure out how it's worded online. I've just done a good search for Inventory management and found software available. If you're looking for tracking software, look for that. Most likely you'll at least find someone else who's asked the same questions. If you're just here to bitch and moan, please move on. -
