- foofightrs777, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Wait, a story about linux on the front page that didnt use Ubuntu as a buzzword to get dugg up!?
Now, now about a story of how to get my sound in flash9 to work in edgy. I've tried everythign else at this point. :/ - opitica, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9hollllyyyy *****. an actual linux submission that doesn't involve the word ubuntu.
- schestowitz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Fedora 7 comes with 3 virtualisation technologies built in, so I suspect VMWare is slowly becoming obsolete on Red Hat's line. Needless to say, VMWare is upset at RH for this. It's also likely to sue Microsoft for deciding that *gasp* virtualisation belongs /inside/ the O/S (bad idea, for stability reason... monolithic kernels... just think about the effect of putting IE right inside the O/S).
- bobcrotch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yay dugg for a Linux article not regarding Unbuntu even though as mentioned already it is sort of pointless on RH.
VM is great though for it's management and it's fairly wide spread knowledge - ruimoura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3True. I've been using vmware server on my Fedora 6 from the beginning, but 1 month ago i tried VirtualBox and kicks ass. Faster and a lot easier to install. The only problems is that it is a little unstable ...
- dumbkiwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Have a look at this article for a quick howto on VirtualBox (video included):
http://liquidweather.net/howto/index.php?id=103
VirtualBox is (imho) easier to install, and faster than VMWare, and to boot is GPL.
Can't ask for better than that. - ibis, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3oforonda: Vmware player is in the repos in newer versions of Ubuntu (definitely in Edgy and Feisty). You just use apt or synaptic to install it.
- SammyJr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly, the best way to install VMWare on unsupported kernels like in FC6 is the use of the VMware-any-any patch. It avoids all the editing of config files and whatnot.

Works beautifully with 2.6.20. - MadChicken, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1VMWare runs XP quite nicely. I am using it on my FC6 Athlon 2200+ 768MB WITH Beryl running on my GeForce 5500 (ok enough stats) and it runs just fine - possibly nicer than native (though the native one was loaded down, and this is a fairly clean install). I do VB6 development inside it and I have no temptation to reboot.
I didn't need to do all this stuff, I did the config.h thing and grabbed the Any 2 Any patch, that was it, I think. - Haplo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Is any of those techniques able to run Windows XP (for example) at a good speed?
- jsusanka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah I noticed vmware started making things free when xen got production ready.
I will stick with xen - can't wait for RHEL 5 at work - I have no need to run windows. - K0RETH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1May wanna try VirtualBox ;)

I disagree. Just because Linux distros/MS are starting to add hypervisors to their kernel doesn't mean VMware automatically becomes obsolete. The future of virtualization won't be in the hypervisor but rather the value-added services/actions each respective company can offer. With add-ons such as Vmotion, HA, and VirtualCenter, VMware will continue to hold the lead in regards to feature sets. It will be interesting to see what the other companies do (once the hypervisors are released) in regards to these value-added services. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2vmware is cake in centos, I love fedora but it's a little too bleeding sometimes. for this very reason I use vmware server in centos it's solid stable and super easy to setup. If you like fedora and are used to yum but would rather trade super new applications versus stability I highly recommend centos.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Agreed.
***** the ubuntu hype. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Hooray for a non-ubuntu linux article.
***** the ubuntu hype. - generalloy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's why the FSF is working on Gnash. Look for it to play Youtube vids in April.
- xlocust, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1bah
- NiX0n, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Ubuntu is pretty kickn'
I've been a Fedora fan since it's inception, but I decided to try Ubuntu out, and it rates well on the "Just Works" index. - aforonda, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2why does vmware have to be such a pain in the ass to install? used automatix on ubuntu to install vmware player and did not work, only later to find out you have to recompile it for ubuntu dapper or some ***** like that. I'm trying to stick with linux I really am but man double clicking a .exe was just so f'ing easy. but i dont want to go back to ms instability hell, and mac is so damn expensive, what to do what to do?
- dropkickjoe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0nerdddddddssssssssssss!!!!!
- santaliqueur, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1$599 for a mac mini is expensive?
- natenovs, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4i have to say, poor flash support is the number one reason why i cant use linux. its a pretty lame reason, but theres enough things i want to do on the web that just dont work quite right for me
- diggfinity, on 10/12/2007, -16/+3Did anyone else read the title as "How To Not Get Laid. Ever."?
