- bombadier337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I'm on edgy but I support XGL/Compiz wholeheartedly. It works great for convincing people to try Linux (I've had 4 people comment on my XGL/Beryl setup and now 2 of them use a Linux distro as their primary OS). Everytime someone writes these tutorials and makes the setup easy for beginners it helps the community!
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You can use it, you just have to enable it on the command line when you start the installer.
- fishbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A title that would've generated more diggs...
"How To: Enable Compiz effects on Fedora Core 6 (Ubuntu)" - Gregd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I find it extremely interesting that *nix users will vehemently support *their* version of linux to the exclusion of everyone else's. This submissions comments appear to already be headed that way. Could it be the Linux users themselves that keep others from trying Linux?
- vinbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4BTW the open source drivers work with AIGLX on many ATI cards, it's only ATI's own proprietory fglrx driver that doesn't support AIGLX yet. Whereas the Nvidia proprietory driver is required for 3D acceleration on Nvidia cards.
As ATI release their Linux driver updates every month it won't be long until AIGLX is supported by fglrx too.
Forget XGL as it's inefficient and requires a second X server, now both Ubuntu Edgy & FC6 include the Xorg 7 GLX extension (AIGLX) by default, so now it's just a case installing Beryl on Ubuntu or enabling the 'Desktop Effects' button in FC6, the rest will surely follow. - sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The nvidia support is beta for everyones information.
And yeah aiglx is the better method and it always has been and always will be due to the fact that it is an extension of xorg and not an x hack.
Aiglx and good linux drivers are the main reasons i bought an nvidia card to replace my antiquated ati card. - Shadowman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think that's true. Users of some distros are much worse than others. Fedora, openSUSE, Mandriva - they generally don't have that "my distro rocks and yours sucks" attitude. But others like Gentoo often do and Ubuntu is in a league by itself with over-the-top fanboyism. Just look at the comment farther down - "Ubuntu is obviously the Linux of preference for the people".
And of course you have the never-ending Gnome vs KDE battle. No need to divide and conquer. The Linux community is already divided on everything. - cmost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I don't know why people are so negative when it comes to XGL. I don't care how "hackish" it is, the fact of the matter is that it beat AIGLX into a mainstream distro (thanks Novell!) XGL, for the most part, simply just WORKS for the end user where AIGLX won't or can't work due to driver and/or hardware limitations. Your average John Q. Public won't know how hackish XGL might be because they generally don't know how X servers work, or, they simply don't care. All they know is they have an amazing looking desktop that blows the doors off anything Windblows offers or even Mac OS-X for that matter. I've been using XGL/Beryl on my Ubuntu Dapper system with a recent nVida card and I've found it to be rock stable and smooth as silk. While AIGLX may be the evolutionary next step forward for XR11, XGL filled a much needed gap and the folks at Novell should be commended, and highly respected, for their efforts in getting an accelerated desktop to Linux, at long last.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The Novell developers would definitely disagree with you. Compiz most likely is going to be merged back into the Metacity window management system once it is out of development, and Beryl will continue to be a fork of that project. Most likely Compiz will yank many ideas from Beryl. And seeing as how Beryl is only supported by a small group, I don't see it continuing for the long term.

(RPMS included) - maximusGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Compiz did not get installed when I upgraded from FC5 to FC6.
- sishgupta, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1John Q public wont know how hackish XGL is because its a pain in the ass to get working and JQP will likely not bother. And if they do bother they will likely ditch it completely because XGL glitches too easily, and JQP will blame linux as they don't understand X.
The reason people like my self are so negative to XGL is because it IS a hack. It blows my mind why they decided to implement XGL in the fashion they did when xorg is designed to be extensible. This is a part of the reason everyone made the switch from xfree86 to xorg a while back. XGL was great in that it was a concept that has begun a great change in linux. The novell team did a great job but now they need to move on. Their concept has evolved and they need to work with that evolution if they arent allready. (I dont follow xgl anymore) - prototypeangel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually I'm running on FC6 right now and after installation of my nvidia drivers from the net, I immediately started noticing all the compiz effects. If someone would write a tutorial on how to use beryl instead of compiz that would be good. Because I prefer beryl over this.
- buzzedlightyear, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2who would follow a guide to installing just compiz and nvidia drivers from a person who had to try 3 formats and OS installs to do it?
- gurupanguji, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Well, that is the exact reason why I didn't put that title in!! There are not many XGL instructions for Zod. Ubuntu is obviously the Linux of preference for the people and mind you - I am in love with their community :-)!! However, Fedora Core and Fedora Core 6 has barely got any mention here :-)!! Hence the reason why I had to write it up!! :-)
- nutcase, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1I am curious too, some linux masters let us know about the differences in plain english. Also anyone out there have good experience with ubuntu/mythtv?
- damentz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Tah, maybe if they allowed you to use something else than ext3, I would try FC6. XFS is a must for my slow laptop hard drive.
- michaelg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1Psh... it suggests aiglx and it's Fedora. AIGLX only works for nvidia cards and XGL is better suited for ATI users. Also, I think the new beryl project is a great improvement on compiz.
- ga7sh, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0***** this doesn't work, i just tried it
