2. What do you do about any app that needs Windows to run on? True you can use WINE with Linux to run a lot of Windows software - but there is also plenty that doesn't. For example I need Windows in order to run Fruityloops, Reason, Cubase or Pro Tools.
3. If you go with Linux and your computer contains hardware made by vendors so tied to Microsoft that you just can't get drivers for unix-based operating systems, you're screwed.
It's not that easy to be Microsoft free... - saftaplan, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1Dugg you up just for point 1.
2: There are plenty of alternatives to software like Fruityloops, that are free software (and thus better). And if you really really can't use these for some reason, you can use VirtualBox or QEMU and even have Windows apps seamlessly integrated. That's not Microsoft-free since you still need Windows, but it comes close.
3: Buying new hardware that's compatible with Linux is often cheaper than buying a new Windows license.
I'm MS-free for more than a year, always had Windows installed as second boot but I had to remove it a couple of months ago and failed to do the effort to reinstall it since I don't need it anymore. It *is* possible, and not that hard. - lenninct, on 07/14/2008, -0/+1tried to be M$ free several times and failed at it every single one of them, Ubuntu is the closest competitor IMO, but i guess not everyone agrees with me.
