- HiVoltRock, on 02/16/2009, -7/+39"If Bill Gates knows about this, he would be proud..."
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -1/+28 I agree...I guess they will be going after people who don't know you can't get Linux for free.
- desuexmachina, on 02/16/2009, -0/+25Just for my own curiosity, how could they possibly name it unintentionally?
- motang, on 02/16/2009, -3/+27Please tell me this is a joke!
- booyahbitch, on 02/16/2009, -2/+25I have to admit, it is fairly pretty...but can be done with Ubuntu, so basically you pay for someone typing: sudo apt-get install XXXXX and changing your theme.
- abudhu, on 02/16/2009, -3/+25Did you bother to read the article? It has nothing to do with making anything easy for a user. By and large it is just a skinned version of Ubuntu, that they charge for and limit your installations to.
- nuclearwasted, on 02/16/2009, -1/+21I ask the same thing about Windows....
- dtfinch, on 02/16/2009, -1/+20Never heard of iMagic before.
So it's $80 for this, or $0 for the full uncrippled version.
They'll probably focus more on OEMs like Linspire did. They'd rather pay for something they could get for free, just to have a willing scapegoat for support and legal issues. - Vadi0, on 02/16/2009, -1/+18I don't see any Microsoft hate here or Ubuntu fanboyism.
It's practical advice on how to run a business. Just watch - this model will fail. - Vadi0, on 02/16/2009, -2/+18Anyone want to buy my Ubuntu disk for $20?
(shh, I know you already get them at Best Buy for that, or free from the site. Digg entourage doesn't though!) - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -3/+16This isn't slashdot and not everyone needs to compile apps from scratch. wtf is it 1994?
- LiquidSpark, on 02/16/2009, -3/+14What I don't get is what this OS offers that I can't get in another distro for free? If they expect people to pay it has to offer something worthwhile.
- devnullDood, on 02/16/2009, -0/+9I guess if people are dumb enough........
- fjsferreira, on 02/16/2009, -1/+9These guys know that most people would rather pay money than use their brain for a second.
- ligyron, on 02/16/2009, -0/+8Obviously they did it intentionally. The whole point of the distro is an OS X GUI clone
- swab, on 02/16/2009, -0/+7Updates with CNR? Lindows all over again?
- inactive, on 02/16/2009, -1/+8The sad thing is that they have every right to sell their distribution as long as they comply with the gpl and provide source packages. As much as I can't stand Apple Legal this is the one time where their cease and desist letters are welcome. Somewhere in Antarctica a penguin just suicided.
- starkraving, on 02/17/2009, -1/+8Balls for naming their product IMagic OS X. Big, titanium balls.
- MethodOne, on 02/17/2009, -1/+7I just made Apple aware of this because the "OS X" edition uses a cheap imitation of the Leopard wallpaper and exact copies of the Mail.app, iMovie (which they used for a media player instead of a video editor), iTunes (which they used for a Linux-native audio player instead of iTunes running in Wine), and Software Update icons. I did that because I don't want people to fall for this crap.
- nobogeys217, on 02/17/2009, -0/+6how has this company not been sued by everyone yet?
- 6oo63D, on 02/17/2009, -0/+6@ayeroxor: funny, i didn't even realize he made a mistake in his comment probably because my brain was autocorrecting me. does it ever happen to anyone?
- ayeroxor, on 02/16/2009, -4/+9You're being buried because 'wat' isn't a word, and even if you were trying to say "What say..??" in your own retarded way, well, that doesn't make any sense.
- srg13, on 02/17/2009, -1/+6They can, but they have to provide the source code to all the GPL packages they use. I couldn't find any, and when somebody on the Wine mailing list emailed these guys, they just tried to point them to a repository full of unmodified Ubuntu packages.I couldn't find any evidence that this has changed, so they are breeching the GPL...
- sirhomer, on 02/16/2009, -1/+6How to get free publicity
- cesclaveria, on 02/16/2009, -1/+6for an end user those are things they do not need to know, if they are ubuntu users that have never had the need to open a CLI, what is the problem? That is a big step forward. You only sound like a guy who is upset because what he likes is popular now.
- jas168, on 02/16/2009, -2/+6What exactly is your complaint about the article itself?
I think he's making a fine point in saying that Linux distros shouldn't only separate themselves out of the pack by mimicking commercial software's appearance or name. I agree that he's speaking for the community, and he shouldn't, but it's not a big deal and not as bad as calling someone a "child" and bitching about part of the demographic that uses Ubuntu.. - certifried, on 02/17/2009, -2/+6http://delamarepro.com/site/about.html
It's just a kid trying to make a buck. He didn't invent lemonade, he just painted himself a pretty stand to sell it from. The claims on his website border on (if not outright) lies, his "license" or EULA (whatever you want to call it) is illegal. It violates the GPL as well as stated above many Licenses & trademarks. I saw someone mention on the Ubuntu forums "Red Hat sells RHEL". No, Red Hat sells "support" for RHEL, the source code is freely available, and MUST be made so according to the GPL. I don't see source code available for download for this POS distro, clearly a violation and I'm sure this kid is going to learn a few lessons, very soon. - srg13, on 02/17/2009, -1/+5They don't let you download the source code - so it's just like using Windows!
But seriously, this popped up on the Wine developer list because somebody spotted that the site claimed that it could run 'all Windows applications' or something and people were trying to figure out whether it was using Crossover or just Wine. Anyway, Somebody asked the owners if they could see the source code that they had (They need to provide the sources of all the GPL software in it, like the Linux kernel, Gnome, etc.), and the guy seemed to think that they could just send people to their repository which was filled with unmodified Ubuntu deb packages.
So it's not only ripping off Apple's trademark of OS X, but they are also in breech of the GPL... - inactive, on 02/16/2009, -0/+4Heavy drinking.
- 6oo63D, on 02/17/2009, -0/+4it's a joke but that doesn't make it less real.
- inactive, on 02/17/2009, -0/+3google.com
- MacEnvy, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3It says it uses CNR (Click-N-Run) so it's definitely aimed at the Linspire market. It may even be associated with them in some way.
- raydeen, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Can't imagine they're making any money. The base system is $49 which includes Crossover Games ($39). Take out the cost of duplication, packaging, whatever else goes into it...unless it's some dude in his basement, it's a stupid endeavor. And even if the installation bit wasn't stupid, it probably violates the Crossover license. I'm sure Crossover would be happy to know that I installed their software three times for the price of one.
Edit: Oh yeah, the only real IMagic was an Atari developer back in the '80's. I need to go play some Demon Attack now. - Xsecrets, on 02/16/2009, -1/+4however the article does mention that hey have an authentication system which limits the number of computers you can install it on which is a direct violation of the gpl.
- prammy, on 02/17/2009, -0/+3Actually, they violate section 6 of the GPL.
"Each time you redistribute the Program (or any work based on the Program), the recipient automatically receives a license from the original licensor to copy, distribute or modify the Program subject to these terms and conditions. You may not impose any further restrictions on the recipients' exercise of the rights granted herein. You are not responsible for enforcing compliance by third parties to this License. "
The license does not make a distinction for this section between source and binary versions. Their attempt at restricting usage to 3 computers to the person they sold it to violates the licenses. - GiJoeBob, on 02/16/2009, -0/+3Tech Support
- raldz, on 02/17/2009, -1/+4I think I'll just wait until they release Service Pack 1..
- srg13, on 02/17/2009, -1/+3I think that the main point is that they just skinned Ubuntu, and did it worse than Linux Mint, which is free. And then there's the bit where all their repository is full of unmodified Ubuntu packages - they were in such a hurry to make a quick buck that they couldn't even be bothered to compile them themselves. Then there's the bit where they don't provide any source code to all the GPL and LGPL software they are using, which is illegal. And then, they're breeching Apple's trademark (in their iMagic OS X product) which is also against the law..
Come on, these people are really dodgy... - mk2ja, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2Sounds like they are "pre skinned"... and that's about it. Pretty sure I'd not call that worth paying for, but apparently some people think it is.
- m0deth, on 02/16/2009, -2/+4um, a mature OS shouldn't require compiling of apps for the user end...nor should it expect users to know about command lines it lazily left out of your awesome do-it-all gui you speak of...heh (it's so hard to make a radio box, drop down, etc)
like one good do it all GUI even exists for Linux.
not that I don't know where the terminal is...I do...but, I hear this arrogant dumb ***** from every linux diehard I have ever encountered...and it's all dung. please don't excuse the failure in GUI development and the confusion it causes to early adopters, and don't coin it as anything but failure on a massive level. - niviq, on 02/18/2009, -0/+2Sorry failure: http://imagicos.net/private_packages/depend.html
- digerati1338, on 02/16/2009, -1/+3"it's better to have some DOS experience to appreciate the benefits of the do-all GUI."
Personally I'd take CLI over GUI for most tasks. - jas168, on 02/16/2009, -2/+4People are using open source software without having to compile it? Those bastards!
Anyway, Ubuntu was my first Linux experience and you shouldn't generalize users. Even if they are new to it, you have to start somewhere. - falafelkiosken, on 02/16/2009, -1/+3if they want to attract Windows users that's exactly the target to focus on
- volcompimp, on 02/17/2009, -1/+3Shameful
- shethinkmefunny, on 02/17/2009, -0/+2Yeah, but their tech support probably consists of a few people they pulled in from job service* that have never heard of Linux. They just give them a couple of troubleshooting flowcharts and cue cards, and hope one of their 5 customers doesn't actually call support.
*not a slam against job service - m0deth, on 02/16/2009, -2/+3lol, Wizards of the Coast has been made aware of the use of the term "magicOnline" for their crappy repo.....expect a name change soon
muhahahahaha - Icetype, on 02/18/2009, -0/+1Tungsten carbide balls. Won't scratch.
- fukawi2, on 02/17/2009, -1/+2Not quite... They only have to allow unrestricted distribution of the source code, not the binaries. They can put whatever restrictions they like on the binaries. Although it's always kind of redundant, when the source code is unrestricted and anyone can compile it themselves however they like.
