- Erfus, on 06/30/2008, -27/+167Who wants to look at brown all day? I really dislike Ubuntu's graphical direction in general.
- VVho, on 06/30/2008, -4/+125Can everyone chill out about the theme please, or at least find out a bit about the process before screaming you don't like it!
The Ubuntu Art Team decided that it was necessary to TEST dark themes so we could find the BUGS to report to application developers (unlike just changing the look of the buttons, going to a dark theme requires some applications that don't 'expec' dark themes to be updated to be compatible). The idea was so that IF A USER or distrubtion wants to have a dark theme then we can make sure there aren’t any problems doing that (until recently it has been very problematic) and it will look lovely
Because the Ubuntu alphas have fairly good developer visability it was felt that running a dark theme on early alphas would be the best way to achieve this… So, if you see specific bugs, post them in Launchpad or Gnome bugzilla. If you just don’t like it, chill out and it will be different soon :)
So, in summary. This is a test. We want to have bugs reported agains _specific_ instances of things not looking right. (ie "theme is brown and ugly" is NOT useful) - bratterscain, on 06/30/2008, -14/+80The scheme only makes it look like darker poop. And out of any color that can make me more productive, ***** brown is probably the worst color. Sorry, can't digg it, Ubuntu. I like contrast, not a dull boring monotone desktop. I know it's changeable but this, I'm sure, doesn't attract some newcomers who don't know. At least Vista and the new KDE, by default, have a decent color scheme and both of which I use. Gnome, for me, is just too simplistic and has less config options.
- courtjester555, on 06/30/2008, -3/+69I encourage everyone to test this release and future Alphas in a virtualization program like VirtualBox.
Alpha 1 on Distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=04969
.iso file (shouldn't be too much strain on the servers): http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha- ...
.torrent file (try to use this instead of direct download): http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/intrepid/alpha- ...
Virtualbox: http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads (sudo apt-get install virtualbox)
Keep in mind that there is no Live CD; this is a text-based installer like the "alternate" releases. Future Alphas should be available as Live CDs. - xike, on 06/30/2008, -0/+54First impressions are a pretty big deal. I wish they chose colors that would be more widely accepted.
- cak3, on 06/30/2008, -9/+53I hope not, looks like poo
- chrisfnet, on 06/30/2008, -1/+36True, it's easy to change. But, I thought an aim was to get new users.. users coming from Windows and OS X. They want to see the pretty.
- americamatrix, on 06/30/2008, -13/+48Theme is too dark....
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -5/+39I don't really like the theme - I'm perfectly happy with Clearlooks Classic (with a light grey background colour instead of the slightly beige grey), with Tango icons, and a black window border theme running on Emerald. Then I make the panels into one at the top, and add in AWN at the bottom.
This, with a nice background, looks awesome - vibrokatana, on 06/30/2008, -20/+52...And it takes all of 2 seconds to change.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+32If thats the explanation then i am cool with that.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -2/+30Its the same look! Its all the same look! Doesn't anybody notice this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills! I INVENTED THE PIANO KEY NECKTIE!!!
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -15/+43looks like *****.
- BuzzFriendly, on 06/30/2008, -6/+25With all of the possibilities Ubuntu brings to the table the only thing people seem to be concerned about is the theme.
- xike, on 06/30/2008, -5/+23I happily drink all the Ubuntu kool-aid except when it comes to the theme. I'd have to be really drunk to think this looks good.
- cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+18This is just an Alpha release. You don't want to run it on your main machine.
- handheldchimp, on 06/30/2008, -4/+21Because then you could call it Horny Heron!
- thtroyer, on 06/30/2008, -1/+18I would think that testing on real hardware is more useful, especially in finding bugs for hardware detection.
Testing in a VM would certainly catch software bugs -- usually problems in how the package was compiled/configured. - fragsta, on 06/30/2008, -6/+23Too much dark. It wouldn't be so bad if just the top and bottom bars were that colour, but everything is, and it just looks too dark and uncomfortable.
I'm gonna stick with Blubuntu: http://brentroos.com/2006/07/29/blubuntu/ - ToadLeg, on 06/30/2008, -5/+21What is this obsession with excrement? There are a lot of things that are brown that are not *****, like wood. The theme looks like wood to me, and looks nice. I'm tired of themes that are bright, or even completely white, that are blinding, especially at night.
What if we didn't like blue themes because mold is blue? Or didn't like green themes because vomit can be green? Or didn't like red themes because blood is red? This is simply nonsense, and is the equivalent of looking at an ink blot test and saying "Why did you just draw my mother vaginally inserting a cactus while my sister rubs a fish on her nipple, you sick freak?"
(and no, a comment I made 4 posts back has nothing to do with this) - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -4/+19Why?
- ha3er0, on 06/16/2009, -5/+20I hope this design doesn't make the final release. There wer some good concept design before the hardy release, Why don't they take inspiration from there? I really liked the gelatin concept.
http://www.linuxhaxor.net/2008/01/02/ubuntu-mockup ... - flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -9/+22Theme is not permanent. Theme can be changed.
- haterofps3, on 06/30/2008, -1/+13That was pointless, all he did was point out that this is an Alpha not a beta not a RC not anything other than what it is.
please stfu and gtfo - Schmich, on 06/30/2008, -0/+12So why don't they change the default one to something more desirable? The brown is not a good environment to work in and when it comes to pure taste I think it's quite repelling.
- alexforcefive, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11Well, I'm not so interested in sub-notebook optimisations or usb installation. Faster boot time will be nice, though
- neFariou5, on 06/30/2008, -1/+11unless you use a livecd
- flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -3/+14don't tell me you've never considered humping your computer, you freak.
- Hangly, on 06/30/2008, -0/+10Yes. We have reached the limits of what brown can teach us.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -2/+11MS got a lot of flack for the stupid Fisher Price Blue XP theme so even for linux that argument is legit. It you are trying to convince people to use a new OS it better look Pretty. If this is whats its gonna look like then i would rather get mint Linux.
- afallucco, on 06/30/2008, -7/+16Make the theme glossy...
- Hypersapien, on 06/30/2008, -1/+10I guess 'Iguana' was too obvious
- perfectska04, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9Thanks for posting the instructions, I'm the creator of the script/artwork and I was about to post it. I guess I did get a pleasant surprise this morning, I certainly didn't imagine I would be seing my stuff mentioned in a front page article.
- longboarder543, on 06/30/2008, -1/+9It looks like an Ibex took a big dump on the old clearlooks theme.
- flangepiece, on 06/30/2008, -0/+8Hey audiologic, no offense meant, and I'd hoped that the ludicrous nature of my reply would have suggested to you that I wasn't being serious.
But come on, when that hard drive light is winking at you suggestively, don't you at least get a semi on? - inactive, on 06/30/2008, -3/+11Anything that helps move us away from Microsoft is a wonderful thing. Thank God for open source.
- springo, on 06/30/2008, -1/+8It's too dark. It's harder to read white over brown than black over white...
Besides, I prefer a palette with silver, green or blue over a palette with orange and brown, but I guess that will never be Ubuntu's default choice. - Sabretou, on 06/30/2008, -2/+9...
I see you've never come close to Linux before. - Grjemo, on 06/30/2008, -0/+7Guys, don't digg him down. Educate him. You *CAN* change the colours.
- arjie, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6You know, personally I stuck with the orange-brown when I installed it but the theme should come in three or four colours so changing it is a simple switch in the Appearance dialog box.
Yes, I know you can fiddle around and get the result by changing different window borders and icons and stuff but I mean just different colours. In the previous release, though there was a tab for colours, Human did not support changing them. That's wrong in two ways: first, the purpose isn't accomplished. Second, it's frustrating to switch to a colours tab that's all greyed out.
As someone who loves the rest of the distribution, I hope they've changed this. - cawpin, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Ubuntu's servers sure aren't loaded. I'm getting it at 2 MB/s, should be done in 6 minutes.
- deadlikeoscar, on 06/30/2008, -7/+13Heck, changing it is part of the fun.
- bigtimslim, on 06/30/2008, -2/+8from the mentioned colorizeMe scripts readme:
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Open a terminal window, and browse to the location of the desired script. (for example, 'cd /ColorizeMe-0.4/Clearlooks-Style'
2. Type the name of the install script, and add the desired color-scheme like this: './install -brave'
3. ???
4. PROFIT!!! - iJessicaRabbit, on 06/30/2008, -0/+6Maybe a nice theme = bait to get more people to try Ubuntu? If it works then I'm all for talking about fun themes :)
- srg13, on 06/30/2008, -2/+7"MS got a lot of flack for the stupid Fisher Price Blue XP theme"
But that was mainly because the extent to which you could customise it was to pick one of the other two colour schemes... Unless you wanted to crack that dll that lets you install unsigned themes.
At least with Ubuntu (and most other distros), there are better looking (imho) themes included, or you can easily install any other of the hundreds available on the internet. Or you could just change the colours of this theme in the Appearance preferences.
But I do agree that this is sub par and should not be the default in the final release. - glinsvad, on 06/30/2008, -0/+5Full list of blueprints for Intrepid:
https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/intrepid/+ ... - Sabretou, on 06/30/2008, -1/+6You've got to be kidding me.
- inactive, on 06/30/2008, -2/+7That new look sucks.
- Konstantino, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5I'm sure you can change it to the old style if you want in the system preferences.
- Theli, on 06/30/2008, -1/+5Didn't seem to work so well. The window decorators and the GNOME panels became gray. And using #FFFFFF white text on dark sewage background was a really bad idea. Quite frankly, I can't find a single positive thing to say about it.
