- dullnation, on 07/19/2008, -6/+68Taking over? I thought linux was supposed to be about choice...
- Dumbledorito, on 07/19/2008, -7/+48This is "taking over" in the same sense that because I can get RC Cola at my local stop-n-rob that it's "taking over" from Coke?
- inactive, on 07/18/2008, -11/+50In your dreams sweetheart.
- OnlyGirlOnDigg, on 07/19/2008, -4/+41I'm running Hardy on my 1520 as I type. I can do everything, even get my WoW fix on this baby via Wine.
- TinyStickFigure, on 07/18/2008, -4/+34hell yea!
- Kamujin, on 07/19/2008, -0/+28I've had Hardy on my XPS 1530 for a while now.
Yes, I would have preferred to vote with my wallet and buy it pre-installed. - itsradBrad, on 07/19/2008, -10/+37Awesome, but you'll never be able to pee standing up.
Haha, sorry. - Sultana, on 07/18/2008, -5/+28yay!
When I'm finally in the market for a new computer, I'll go with a Dell again, and have Ubuntu set up on it. So far all the Dell computers I've had over the years have been great. Never needed customer service on any of them, I do my own troubleshooting. :) - CasualNinja, on 07/19/2008, -2/+22Worst game ever!!
- OnlyGirlOnDigg, on 07/19/2008, -0/+18And it will never be socially acceptable for you to go to the restroom with a gaggle of guys.
/lame comeback - Kungfucorey, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17Unfortunately I got my 1330 before they offered ubuntu, so i got stuck paying for windows even though i tried to tell customer support that i didn't want it.
- Phocion55, on 07/19/2008, -0/+17Everyone meet Amiga501. He follows me around on Digg, yet I've never actually acknowledged his existence by directly responding to his derogatory comments.
Anyone out there a psychiatrist that would care to guess what psychological disorders he suffers from? - Kamujin, on 07/19/2008, -7/+23Microsoft has been losing market share for years.
Where have you been? - Zounas, on 07/19/2008, -0/+16Some girls are able...
- NGliam, on 07/19/2008, -2/+17I was looking at linux on dell earlier, I was pleasantly suprised. 3GB ram, 160gb HDD, 2ghz dual core processor, extended life battery all for £370. The same laptop with Vista would be closer to £500, the only problem is I'm not sure if I'm ready to take the step towards Linux. Dual booting is much better for me so because I want to play games which are only available on Vista.. Wine is easy to use but does not fully offer what I need :X
- MrRabbit, on 07/19/2008, -4/+19They've got a loooong way to go still. Microsoft is on top and it will be for awhile, like it or not.
Personally I don't. I use and love Ubuntu, but I'm not delusional. Gotta have an XP machine too. - Balanced, on 07/19/2008, -0/+15I think the poster just means as in iTunes for Linux, etc.
i still think it's unlikely. - Norumeni, on 07/19/2008, -1/+14Never gonna happen :)
- Phocion55, on 07/19/2008, -0/+13I purchased a Dell desktop preloaded with Ubuntu a few days after they started offering it last summer. Honestly, it's been a pretty good experience, so I'd recommend it.
Currently use it as a dev box that takes massive amounts of abuse on a daily basis without any problems. :) - nwoolls, on 07/19/2008, -2/+14I lol'd
- pak314, on 07/19/2008, -0/+10Hardy har har!
- SolidSnak, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9like that would ever happen
- Blandyman, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9Torvaldophobia.
- JamesMorris, on 07/19/2008, -3/+12Someone needs to make a ***** ati fan speed program for linux.
- Disease, on 07/19/2008, -0/+9I lol'd
- Never, on 07/19/2008, -2/+10Better title would be "Dell having a Hardy"
- ExRe, on 07/19/2008, -3/+11Testing DID happen. I know, I was one of the thousands or tens of thousands who Beta tested it.
I've been using Vista for about 2 years now and never had any issue other than driver problems, which isn't MS's fault, those ***** companies are ones I'll never buy from again (logitech/creative).
Vista is by far the most secure and stable Windows OS. If you have issues likely it is from ***** 3rd party software or by screwing with something you shouldn't have. - Retrospekt, on 07/19/2008, -1/+9I feel that Dell's are overly hated by most computer geeks/enthusiasts. They're stable systems and they work, what more can you ask for?
Good for you and your Dell. If I were in the market for a laptop, Dell and Toshiba would be my first choices. - Khanvalescent, on 07/19/2008, -0/+8(Hint: Bring up the ol' infinite orgasm trait.)
- Myztry, on 07/19/2008, -3/+11It makes a hell of a lot of sense to test Operating Systems before commiting them to a product lines.
It's a shame the same didn't happen with Vista.
I'm actually running a Vista box as my main rig at the moment.
Just to make sure I wasn't getting to 'fanboy'ish.
It's been nothing but trouble. Vista behaves as a poor emulator of the Windows line. - silfiriel, on 07/19/2008, -0/+7screw choice, once we take over we'll start the brainwashing program.
- inactive, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6Just use banshee, dude.
- NTolerance, on 07/19/2008, -0/+6Last time I checked all the Dellbuntu laptops were only 1280x800 resolution. Damn shame.
- diggmaddy, on 07/19/2008, -2/+8As much as I want to agree with you, that's still a very impractical thought. "Now" might be inappropriate. I would say "End of Microsoft Windows dominance HAS BEGUN". :)
- deltaandroid, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5You could always put XP or Vista on it afterwards for dual boot. Of course if you didn't have it already, you'd still have to *buy* it.
- ExRe, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Linux is easy provided you don't have any hardware incompatibilities or need to install something that isn't in the package manager.
- Retrospekt, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6Ubuntu is fun to use, it's awesome that Dell is shipping it with systems, but Linux is no where near taking over.
Ubuntu is about the only linux distro I know of that is easy enough to install and has a simple enough package manager for a noob to use. Debian and openSuse are up there, but even so, Linux takes some extended knowledge and someone has to be interested enough to actually read the manuals.
That being said, if I were a regular user, buying a dell and just using my computer for myspace and AIM, would I really care enough to learn Linux? Or would I be the average lazy ass just wanting something extremely easy that I already know, like Vista? - Disease, on 07/19/2008, -1/+6lol camwhore
There's always AMSN for webcam support in MSN. - mohtasham, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5I really appreciate their move, but it's very hard to find their Linux computers on their website.
- ExRe, on 07/19/2008, -0/+5Because the majority of people are not jackasses like you.
- fredmv, on 07/19/2008, -3/+7@Awspire: Of course I've used Wine. I wouldn't praise it otherwise. I never claimed it to be - nor does the project itself - claim it to be an end-all be-all to use Win32 apps in UNIX-like environments. It is a "compatibility layer," and perhaps even a little more.
Photoshop works just fine (personal experience and WineHQ), so you're flat-out lying there.
I've even ran GTA3 perfectly--yes, flawlessly--under Wine. Rosetta Stone runs fine too. I can't even recall a piece of Windows software that hasn't run under Wine at the moment. Indeed, there are some, but they're fervently working on it--which is the natural nature of the free software community. If you really believe it to be "crapware," why don't you help contribute to the project? Maybe, just maybe, instead of talking ***** and doing nothing, you can actually make some changes in the world.
Part of moving to a free operating system is to embrace free software. If you're going to move to a new whole new environment (i.e. GNU/Linux) what is the sense of trying to emulate all of your Windows apps? And even more so - expecting it to work 100% of the time. Why wouldn't you find viable, free software that duplicates the functionality (and perhaps does it better). It sounds like the ultimate exercise in futility.
It sounds like you merely have a vendetta against free software ("linsux"), so I'm not going to try to explain to the blind what light is. To refer to Microsoft operating systems as 'Real OSes' shows your true dense nature. I guess that's why NASA, Google, and the U.S. army primarily use GNU/Linux. Then again, if you like proprietary software the inhibits inherent liberties and freedoms, that is merely your own loss.
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." --Benjamin Franklin - erzhaosong2000, on 07/19/2008, -1/+5dell yea!
- ukblacknight, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Only 1GB of RAM? With that CPU & G.card, should of put 4GB... and no gigabit Ethernet? Thought that comes standard these days.
- Mejogid, on 07/19/2008, -1/+5@Renton
Actually, they bought out CUPS because it's cheaper than designing their own printing architecture in house, and closing the source after buying it would simply have resulted in a fork (and would, I believe, had required the permission of everyone who had contributed). - nubnub, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Don't compare linux to crappy cola.
- RaulMuadDib, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4Yes, I also "bought" mine. I also "buy" all my music and movies.
- LavaWarrior, on 07/19/2008, -0/+4This article is giving me a hardy.
- mithrasinvictus, on 07/19/2008, -0/+3It's almost like they do want the positive PR like this article, but they only want to sell this product through the back door.
