- kulaid, on 05/13/2009, -2/+18What breaks my heart about this currently is:
"Unlike the client components, the server software will not be released under an open source license. Canonical will keep the server software closed for now so that it can build a healthy business on top of the service. This could be viewed as a controversial move by some members of the open source software community. The cloud model is increasingly being challenged by critics who view it as detrimental to user autonomy and software freedom."
I really, really hope they release the server software so that I can have control over my "cloud" - it's not that I distrust Canonical with my data, it's that I distrust myself less... - or3n, on 05/13/2009, -1/+15The fact that the server software won't be open source is a bit disappointing. :/
- aethralis, on 05/13/2009, -0/+14"He [Murphy] also said that the company intends to deliver a fully functional KDE version."
- Defiant001, on 05/13/2009, -1/+14I doubt it, its probably another service that will get hype then pass.
- DangerCollie, on 05/13/2009, -0/+10I really like this, for a couple reasons. It's a nice service and it's a service model that other Linux companies can use to make money. If you don't like those services or don't want to pay for them, don't use them.
This is the way it should be. The OS is a commodity and companies compete to sell useful and valuable services on the commodity platform. It allows for different pricing models. Paid and ad supported. This works, for a lot of reasons.
I'll be surprised if Google doesn't do something similar for Android. - Nickedynick, on 05/13/2009, -4/+12Could this be the 'killer app' we were waiting for...?

- nickdot, on 05/13/2009, -1/+8As an enthousiast Ubuntu user, I don' t like Canonical pushing another closed source product as a business model. Luckily someone already submitted Ubuntu One bugreport: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubunet/+bug/375345 ("Ubuntu One" name infringes on Ubuntu trademark policy and creates confusion)
- ethana2, on 05/13/2009, -0/+6Now that you don't need to carry your files around on a flash drive, ...install Ubuntu on it!
- Nickedynick, on 05/13/2009, -1/+6Seconded - I really don't see the issue. It isn't a substitute for a physical backup, and you probably shouldn't put sensitive data in the cloud, but these issues are ones that are down to the user anyway.
- jdmulloy, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I sure hope so. This has been done so many times before, for example Dropbox. The thing is they always keep the back end software secret. I would love to have something like this on my home server, but every one reinvents the wheel and keeps it all to themselves.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4Who's waiting for a 'killer app'?
We have conky! What more could you possibly want?! - bxcrx, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I could be wrong but this software might also be available for Ubuntu Server so that you could sync with your own server if you wanted too -- This would be huge especially for users who work remotely, but don't want to screw around with VPN to sync files.
- chadsmith729, on 05/13/2009, -0/+4I am stunned, this is going to be really cool to see how this all works out and if people will use it like it's supposed to be used.
- bromac, on 05/13/2009, -1/+4Cloud computing takes your data and puts in under the control of someone else. This is not the ideal situation with many situations.
- bobbknight, on 05/13/2009, -3/+6I'm gona keep my data down to earth, in my house, not in some frelling cloud.
Mark is taking himself a bit to seriously. - Rethcir, on 05/13/2009, -1/+42GB isn't enough to give me a chubby. If they could give out 200GB.. well I'd be putting eyeballs out.
- sloppychris, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Adrive.com gives you 50gb for free. I think that should be the goal.
- LingNoi, on 05/14/2009, -0/+3Client side encryption?
- iambrucenolan, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3Will this work same on Kubuntu??
BTW I installed Kubuntu 9.04 today and it rocks! Best ever,,,
anyone else here who liked it? - motang, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3I'm huge fan of dropbox, and I will use this one but I don't dropbox just works so well on my Ubuntu systems and on my Win XP Pro system.
- Magnes, on 05/13/2009, -0/+3You mean for sharing mp3s? :P
- ukblacknight, on 05/13/2009, -3/+5What's so bad about it? I use dropbox at the moment, works really well! I'd probably use Ubuntu One over dropbox too.
- pentalive, on 05/13/2009, -2/+4My data in someone else's machine? Vulnerable to snoopy employees and sly hackers?
"We will encrypt it!" you say? but how do I know if I can't see and compile the client source?
And How do I know your end doesn't store is unencrypted (for speed..) - foofightrs777, on 05/13/2009, -1/+3Especially since (as the article mentions) Dropbox does exactly the same thing and is more mature.
- moocow1452, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1Your point?
- chessboxing, on 05/13/2009, -2/+3I think on the long run they could allow it to syncronize to your own storage server...
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -2/+3This is the only reason that I won't be using this service.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1That wasn't funny...
- kazamx, on 05/13/2009, -1/+2Why is this being burried? The link points to dropbox. Dropbox is a site that is aready doing pretty much the same thing as Canonicals new idea. Its not 100% the same but it is cross platform and from the reviews I just looked up it seems to get a decent amount of positive feedback
- gradient01, on 05/23/2009, -0/+1Dugg for Python/Twisted/Django/Zope and making the whole thing open source ...
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1ok heres my 2 cents (worth 0)
let me first say that i am a full time gnu/linux user.
As of this article, i can see my self using the "dropbox" like feature and fill the 2gb pretty quick. The 3rd party integration is the real key to this whole thing but they better hope developers of bigger aps go out of their way to take advantage of the tech because syncing Tomboy notes and chat logs doesn't really seem like a "killer" feature.
I guess it would be nice to have an integrated remote app but i dont mind using logme in either.
All in all i guess im not really blown away with any of this yet. - sepelester, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1I'm keeping /home on a separate partition to be able to reinstall or do some testing without breaking my desktop (notes, links, settings, bookmarks, the lot). This would let me forget all about it. My settings will all be in the cloud, hopefully available from first login. With revision control I could even revert in a way similar to Time Machine.
I think it's brilliant. - foofightrs777, on 05/13/2009, -0/+1You could see how it works NOW. getdropbox.com
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 05/13/2009, -2/+2Or porn disguised as MP3s..
- chadsmith729, on 05/13/2009, -2/+2Or porn, you know whatever.
- LingNoi, on 05/14/2009, -1/+1Yes, it would only be an alternative to Dropbox if you get the server and not just the client. All I see here is more of the same.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -1/+0What kind of a ***** moron compares Vista with DOS?! Have you ever had to use DOS?
DOS was ***** great (for it's time), don't compare that pos Vista, to one of the most important collection of operating systems of all time. - PlantAssassin, on 05/13/2009, -4/+3Nice and all, but it is still cloud computing that I and a lot of other people are against. While I'm sure it will work fine, the community might not be so accepting.
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -7/+4"Ubuntu CDs contain only free software applications; we encourage you to use free and open source software, improve it and pass it on."
(But not our soooper seeecret 'cloud' server, you couldn't possibly improve on it... Trust us, we're better than you.) - alexweej, on 05/13/2009, -6/+1No. Not unless the KDE community build a version to hook into KDE (which they could, seeing as the client code is Open Source).
- inactive, on 05/13/2009, -5/+0I think the killer app was Grand Theft Auto 4.
- fenix411, on 05/13/2009, -12/+5http://www.getdropbox.com/
- TheGreatBelow, on 05/13/2009, -10/+3More like gimmick.
Ubuntu should put all their efforts into hardware (driver) support - ohplease, on 05/13/2009, -11/+2CLOUD CLOUD UBUNTU CLOUD CUPERTINO CLOUD BALLMER
- cubicledrone, on 05/13/2009, -12/+0"The Cloud" is hype-*****-speak for "client-server." Like "Vista" was hype-***** for DOS.
