- jakeg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why?
- btgoss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is why we need our government actively blocking cloning research and other genetic engineering. How long until this, "do it because I can" mentality produces a hot chick with three boobs, or a dog with a flat back for holding beers. Just because you can is never the answer.
Won't someone think of the children - FlyingAvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Teen-targetted"?
You really think a teenage kid would be caught dead with one of these? - sporkwitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's what linux geeks do, we see a gizmo and our instant reaction is "can I make it run linux?"
As far as unmodified, if youread the arcticle fully, you'd see that the jukebox itself IS unmodified. Your modifying the cartridge, not the player, that's the point. It allows you to still use it as a normal one, and lets you plug in your mod-cart when you want to boot linux to it. - D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why would I want my pimp to run linux?
- boohiss, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'm glad people are working on getting Linux to run on kids toys instead of, you know, making it better.
- DarkZen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@SpydrMrphy great idea =) If i ever have kids ill make sure to buy them stuff they can hack lol...
As for this device, its kinda fun to mess with..I got one for cheap as dirt off ebay not to long ago and I've turned it into a simple digital picture frame...Only cost about 15$ in all with all the parts and whatnot... The images look pretty good.. Either way, this is kinda old as they got Linux booted on it months ago but its good to see that its getting some attention =) Overall they are fun to mess with =)
-DZ - toekneebullard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to agree that all this would be a lot more exciting if Linux had a more shallow learning curve.
- SupaDawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0how bout getting linux running on my PSP already? Last i checked the project was dead.
- tepidpond, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't know about you, but if I have to crack the case and add JTAG and Serial lines to some device, that doesn't say "unmodified" to me.
- SpydrMrphy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It's cool and all, but why?
This proves the excuse because you can, doesn't mean you should.
Unless little Johny is doing it... then there's your market, a hackable toy for 7 year olds....get 'em addicted while there young - mattduke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Now can someone figure out how to put linux on an iRiver H10, I really want to get some different menus and graphics on it and mroe functionality. The did ti for the H300 series, but no one has done ti for the H10.
- NJank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0wow a hacked PMP. and then you do.... what, exactly?
- phildog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it had built-in wifi I would be excited about this.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0> Old news, the article is from February of LAST year.
Um, no - that's just a typo - check the date *above* the update splash - Feb 15, 2006...
I ran out and bought 2 at KB Toys, they are only $25 for a whole kit - the player, the MP3 kit, several cartidges, headphones, etc. And it was buy one, get one half off... So I paid less than $40 for 2 mp3 players.... And with the mp3 kit, they can use SD or MMx cards, so they can hold up to 512 MB at a time (once you buy the card) so for less than $75 I got a 512 MB Mp3 player with a 2 inch LCD that plays videos... And once I hack Linux onto it, it can do even more stuff... I think... Not sure... Why did I buy this thing again? - towca, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0>Now if they can just get linux running my toaster, i'll be good to go!
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25321 - solarpowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Why?
Because it's a *CHEAP* platform for doing cool stuff: Controllers, media, comm, etc. You name it.
It could easily take the place of (*ugh*) custom hardware, for some projects/products.
I just finished an ARM7-based (like the JuiceBox) portable medical device, this thing has a lot of capability compared to our custom device. - solarpowered, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Point of info: It *already* runs uCLinux.
- linuxrebel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone wanted Linux running on a toaster. Well can't do Linux, but how about netBSD?
http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=25321 - NoThnMoreAB, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it boots* then... staring blankly at a terminal prompt, you realize *oh crap* there's no keyboard!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0...and this is why I don't have linux on my 4th gen iPod?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Old news, the article is from February of LAST year.
I've got a couple juiceboxes, the LCD sucks, audio quality is horrible, the backlight is too dim, but you can find them real cheap on ebay. Don't pay more than $10 for one, maybe 15 if it comes with the SD card adapter. (You'll need the adapter to make it worth while). - tomhung, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hack the planet!
- MadEnvoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I pimped my hacker and put linux in her studebaker.
- mancat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Or, you can move out of the basement, get a job, and buy the real thing.
- ollywompus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dugg most definitely. Now if they can just get linux running my toaster, i'll be good to go!
- commiecat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Genius! Both Linux and Mattel cater to children, so why not combine the marketing strategy? We need more links to blogs, articles about Linux being installed on (insert useless device here) and anything with "Web 2.0" in the title.
Sorry, that's my momentary lapse of netiquette for the day...
