- wontstoptalking, on 03/07/2009, -5/+30If it's Linux, wouldn't the proper term be "modify" or "customize?" Actually, wouldn't the word "hack" not really work for *any* os?
Ok, I'm being nitpicky. The word "hack" now has many different meanings.
For instance, one of Lifehacker's most recent posts is "Hack your Happy Hour" that gives you bar tricks and stuff like that.
Wow, this was the most irrelevant, unnecessary, most self-contradicting comment ever. - zzzpoohzzz, on 03/07/2009, -0/+14could always make a bootable flash drive
- Danikar, on 03/08/2009, -1/+13"A hacker is someone who enjoys playful cleverness—not necessarily with computers. The programmers in the old MIT free software community of the 60s and 70s referred to themselves as hackers. Around 1980, journalists who discovered the hacker community mistakenly took the term to mean “security breaker”.
Please don't spread this mistake. People who break security are 'crackers'."

Probably the easiest way to get linux on there. - Lane, on 03/08/2009, -0/+8ubuntu when downloaded comes with an EXE file that you simply click on and it installs. you are then dual booting as soon as your computer restarts. when you go back into XP it shows as a program that's been installed. Simple as that!
- Gareth321, on 03/08/2009, -2/+7I must agree. I've given Linux a REALLY good go. I even removed Windows for a full 6 months to try and force myself to learn and use Ubuntu. I spent too much time trawling through package libraries and tutorials to ever consider Linux a viable mass market alternative. Sometimes I just want to press a ***** button and have the software install and work.
Of course if I only ever browsed the web, I wouldn't care. So the paradox here is that Linux is great if you're either computer handicapped or the polar opposite. - TKn00b, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4This guide would be much better if it was a guide to install ubuntu netbook remix or xubuntu if you are an xfce fan.
- MKdx, on 03/08/2009, -0/+4That's not the general case. For Eee line for example (which is one of the big lines offering both linux and windows), the return rates were about the same according to Asus CEO.

- twiztidsinz, on 03/08/2009, -1/+5>>That should be no legal media playback apps because of copyright protection lawsuits, RIAA, MPAA etc. etc.
Stop sucking the RIAA, MPAA, etc. etc.'s dick.
There are MANY legal and open source media playback apps and codecs:

A spare 16GB SDHC came with it too which was a nice surprise.
For kicks I was going to refuse to agree to both the EULA and SP3 EULA (??) during setup but couldn't be bothered, I'll just give it to an Aunt or someone who needs XP. Holy crap it took forever to install, and McAfee pop-ups and other junk too forever. Windows is so slow on the Aspire, the mouse would pause when I dragged it across the screen, in all fairness it was probably updates for the virus, anti-spyware or Windows updates or all those. I get the impression some marketing guy was called on a Friday and said "Yeah whatever just throw XP on it, that'll work." No thought AT ALL as to whether it was appropriate or not for this device, it's not, it's very bloated and useless things like DVD apps (good for avi files I guess) Fax, etc.
Linux was going on it anyway but I tried to think of the easiest way; net install, flash drive and then I decided on Wubi but I had to delete enough junk to get down to 5GB free or it warned it would not install. The Wubi install took 1/3 of the time the Windows install did, I chose Xubuntu but even that was not really suited for the screen resolution since during WiFi setup I couldn't see the OK button to apply changes, it was below the lower panel, I had to detach it but even then all I could see was the extreme top part (it's the one on the right side if anyone needs to know!). But as well there needs to be a less bloated version without DVD burning apps, modem dialer etc.
Right now I'm about to try Linpus since it's more suited for a Netbook but a bit cartoonish looking. Linux runs far, far better on the Aspire but Linux needs a good, grown-up looking netbook OS. - h0dges, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3One word: unetbootin
- peestandingup, on 03/08/2009, -7/+10"bringing Linux to hordes of computer users who don't know or care about Linux. They just want something that works, and when they try it, they like it."
Ahh, more Pro-Linux spin. Actually, people don't "like it". They "return it".

Quick! Digg me down before anyone see it. - 3242130193, on 03/08/2009, -0/+3I hacked mine with www.debian.org
I started out with www.archlinux.org but I failed when I couldn't get eth0 to work. I'm such a loser :-( - richtw, on 03/08/2009, -0/+2I have my aspire dual booting xp and windows 7.
i installed daemon tools so that xp could load ISO files.
Used ISO of gparted to partition the drive (you can also use thumb driver version of gparted).
then used ISO of windows 7 and told it to install to the new partition I made. I would expect that would also work with other OS's - hummstheword, on 03/07/2009, -0/+2My aspireone came with xp on it, anyone got a tutorial on how to get dual boot going?
I've looked into it already, but the lack of a disc drive makes things tough. - Maddjonesy, on 03/09/2009, -0/+2Agreed, however 'Hackers' is a much cooler name than 'Crackers', which to some is actually racially offensive haha.
Plus 'Hackers' makes me envision them physically hacking into a server with an axe. Whereas 'Crackers' makes me think of them firing up their crack pipes. - xdevit, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1Screen size issues.... Alt+(Left click anywhere on the app) and drag..
- dhughes, on 03/08/2009, -2/+3 > Media playback is far more difficult and convoluted than it ever was on Windows.
That should be no legal media playback apps because of copyright protection lawsuits, RIAA, MPAA etc. etc. Restricted drivers and 'ultimate installs' are a click away but not legal in some countries due to as mentioned media corporations.
Linux is not Windows but it has to deal with that and has make Windows only hardware work, restricted files (copy protected DVDs) work since corporations are not interested in people who use open source applications using their product.
It's not that it's difficult to use, it's been made difficult by outside influence. - kiddee, on 10/07/2009, -0/+1acer aspire one
http://www.aceraspireones.us - twiztidsinz, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1You can just make a new partition and install linux.
Dual booting on newer OS's isn't that difficult.
Wubi is great, and I'd recommend it, but all your files are stored in one big file. - RyanOC, on 03/08/2009, -3/+4Make life easier and get a dell mini 9 or something with ubuntu and be done with it. Leave windows for the desktop.
- MattBD, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1I've used Sidux on an Eee PC. That has a great flash drive installer, and I first of all installed that to a flash drive then used the flash drive to install Sidux on the Eee.

- Sep11insidejob, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1You will find a lot of info regarding the aspire ones here:
http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/index.php - dhughes, on 03/08/2009, -0/+1 It's not that I can't move the window/dialog box, I don't have any room, the screen resolution is too small and the windows that appear are too big. You can drag them anywhere but even all the way up your mouse pointer hits the top and that's as far as you can go but still the lower half is below the lower panel.
I think the default and highest screen resolution supported is 1200x600 - dcherryholmes, on 03/09/2009, -0/+1Yes, I used unetbootin for the first time when I put Easy Peasy on my eee 900A. It is as simple as downloading the .iso for the flavor of linux you want to install, running the netbootin GUI and pointing it at that iso, and then plugging the thumb drive it creates into your netbook and rebooting. From there, it's just like installing on CD.
- nesagwa, on 03/08/2009, -3/+3Mini9 with Ubuntu has the option for a 64gb SSD for only 400 bucks. Probably the best value in the EEE market I think.
- Daniel591992, on 03/08/2009, -2/+2These guys from MIT call themselves hackers too:
http://hacks.mit.edu - cmost, on 03/08/2009, -2/+1You guys are simply parroting the same old anti-linux sound bites that Microsoft and its FUD have spoon fed you for years. I've been using Linux free and clear for six plus years now and it does everything I need it to including all of the things you claim it won't do for you. With package management like Synaptic, Slapt-get, Yast, etc., how simpler can package management be? It's easier than pushing a ***** button dude! Maybe you're just too stupid to learn something new. Has that thought crossed your narrow mind?
- blackninja543, on 03/08/2009, -3/+2This is why we can have nice things.
- TheBigBentley, on 03/08/2009, -4/+1Or install OSX.
- 5urr3al5am, on 03/08/2009, -6/+2@wontstoptalking -- I complete agree. It's kind of similar to the overuse of the word 'geek'. Very dumb and annoying.
- twiztidsinz, on 03/08/2009, -9/+4I really hate all this pro linux hype...
I -WANT- to like linux. But it just doesn't do (what I consider simple) things well.
Media playback is far more difficult and convoluted than it ever was on Windows. - atm259, on 03/08/2009, -6/+1I ***** hate Napoleon Dynamite.
To be on topic: I might buy a netbook, eventually.
