- schestowitz, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11It is rather weird that H-P is testing the waters everywhere but the US whereas Dell did the very opposite (and the demand exceeded their expectation by an order of magnitude or so). H-P should hurry up because this whole situation makes them seem like followers, not leaders (Dell, Lenovo, Acer, and more beat them to it!).
- z0mbie2099, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11I don't know how to say this politely, but hurry the ***** up HP.
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4You don't understand RedHat then. They only charge for customer support, which all businesses do. You can get all the RedHat binaries for free.
Heck, a good amount of the current kernel work is being done by RedHat engineers. You have them to thank, not Ubuntu. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5I kind of have mixed feelings about the choice of Red Hat... On one hand it's good because any vendor support is good and it will bring leverage to the FOSS community (in terms of drivers and such) but on the other hand, I can't help but think that Ubuntu would have been a better candidate. If we finally manage to get Linux on the average 50 year old's computer, it'd be nice if it could be the same everywhere, cause non-savvy users don't care about those Linux "brands" they want what the neighbour gets. Dell went for Ubuntu, HP for Red Hat, now if say Sony goes Suse it'll end up in even more confusion..... Just what Linux doesn't need right now.
- drakethegreat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3I disagree because software engineers aren't as likely as IT people to want to build their own systems. We have other things to do like actually write code rather then worry about building and buying new parts all the time. Linux is already enough work to setup and configure just to write software...
- anshuman, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Dear HP,
Your laptop (centrino,nvidia,intel-wifi with wpa2personal) appears to be working out-of-box with some distro already http://linuxtruthiness.blogspot.com/2007/09/beta-t ... ... . Hope you don't try to get into license deal and spend needlessly to get things working.
Regards.
Happy HP user on Linux. - CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1People who are buying a Linux machine from Dell, HP etc. but don't know the difference between distros probably won't care which one they get. Not because they're stupid, or they don't care about their computer, but because they are fed up with Windows and want something that is Not Windows. Besides which it's not like they're forcing Gentoo on people, all of the distros you mentioned are stable and relatively user-friendly, perfect for any new Linux user.
- CarzorStelatis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Something tells me that it's unlikely to happen in the Soviet Union any time soon. Perhaps you should read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collapse_of_the_Sovie ...
- mooninite, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1... and my bad, it's "Red Hat"
not "redhat" and not "RedHat" (edit time ran out) - drakethegreat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Haha sucks to be HP cause I already got a Inspiron 530 with Ubuntu. Seems that they are just a tad bit late.
- andreyknure, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Being a technical support engineer of web hosting providers I would like to say Linux is one the best operating systems which is widely used in the web hosting industry. Just take a look at the web hosting companies placed at my web page - www.andreyknure.narod.ru All these companies use Linux to manage their servers.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2This is grate news for me!
- Sushubh, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Linux developers i hope are more proactive on fixing issues. they do not have bosses with personal problems.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0don't be a dickcheese. :)
- craftyguy, on 10/10/2007, -4/+2Actually, call me crazy if you'd like, but I am against the idea of EVERYONE adopting Linux. I've been an avid Linux user for a few years now, and it's quite nice not having to worry about all of the spyware/virus related issues that plague Windows users. Having a large user base move to Linux just means the spammers/script kiddies will start focusing on us Linux users.
- heathuff23, on 10/10/2007, -5/+1I can't see this being beneficial to HP
I may be wrong, but, the only people who buy HP's or Compaq's are people that arent technically inclined. If you are a linux user, most likely you build your own systems and install Linux on your own. Most non technical people never heard of anything but Windows, so I can't see how this is beneficial.
