- homerhomer, on 10/10/2007, -4/+12I wonder on how they decided to go with EL5? I currently run EL5 at work, because of politics, and run Ubuntu at home - to me there is no comparison. Red Hat EL5 package manager sucks BIG TIME, and the whole distro makes me feel like Linux is stuck in the dark ages, while Ubuntu has good package management and the best support-forum community and doesn't make me feel like I'm running Linux from the 90s.
In the end I don't care what distro HP ships, because if it runs on EL5 it will work with any other distro - kevinmotel, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10then go with dell. be glad they are choosing linux at all
- sjvn, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8HP chose RHEL because they see this as much more of an SMB desktop play than a consumer PC. After all, Ubuntu, for all its virtues, doesn't have a complete business stack. Red Hat does. Today's HP dx2250 PC might end up buying RHEL/JBoss App. server's tomorrow.
- andrewlevy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6HP > Dell
- CovardeAnonimo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5people, can i politelly ask you all to suffix your submissions with "in US" when posting news about a major PC vendor adding linux to their mainstream lines ?
i'm asking this because HP selling linux pre-installed in their cheaper, mainstream computers are nothing new here in brasil.
about a month ago i bought an HP compaq V6210 with linux mandriva pre-installed. in a super market. with a coupon for a month of free tech support from mandriva and an HP restore DVD, electronic documentation with HPs brand all over... you know, the works.
US, as i see it, is a little bit slower in the linux adoption thing (maybe because it's microsoft's "turf"). in some other countries, major vendors selling linux is old news.
so, please. next time a major PC builder includes linux in their mainstream line (who's next ? lenovo ? gateway ?), make iot clear that it's in north american market, ok ?
no need to digg me down, this post is just in the best interests of good journalism. thanks. - mpn401, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Thank you for that incredibly constructive and thoughtful contribution to this page's comments.
- nobeastsofierce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3two words. after sales support. oh wait....
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4They should have gone with SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) by Novell.
I can understand the reasoning they didn't go behind Ubuntu, since it is not marketed as an "Enterprise Solution". - boredmerlin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2neither did I, but it did ***** smell.
- targetX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2omg :| yes it is
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2you'll be the first to "admit" it??
edit: saw below post.. all is clear :) - cynicist, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ubuntu is backed by Canonical and there are certifications for it. Besides the age of the distros, there is very little difference. Personally, I wish they had gone with OpenSuSe. Red Hat's desktop offerings have always seemed incomplete to me.
- tnoy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Lenovo sells machines with XP on their T, X, R, and N series laptops; only the V series is Vista-only. You're less likely to see a XP machine at, say, Best Buy, but it doesnt mean the laptops with XP are not out there.
- abhiroop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You really shouldn't be on digg if ur mind goes to Harry Potter before Hewlett Packard.
- sloppychris, on 10/10/2007, -4/+5Of course there are lots of great distributions out there, and it's unfortunate that often times a certain distribution gets confused with the name "Linux", but I'll be the first to admit they didn't choose Ubuntu.
- shavenlunatic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1i look at it as more of a "money off for not getting MS bloat installed on my purchase".. so certified hardware and no OS loaded at all would be just as "win" in my opinion.
- jshabad00, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1:sigh: The point is that the hardware is "certified" for linux, which is pretty damn nice for notebooks (assuming HP adds to the lineup).
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Shouldn't be brown nosing your cat.. loser
- caleb4mj, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3I recently considered paying $1350 for an HP laptop, but decided against it because it had VIsta preinstalled. And since then I've found a Lenovo that's very nice, but again, its got Vista. If neither business wants my money I'm happy to keep it. I already got a laptop, but either of these would have been be a nice upgrade. Maybe their next generation laptops will catch my eye again.. I can wait. Laptops don't hold value.
- angrykeyboarder, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Does it really matter what distro they put on it? Reformat and install the distro of your choice. Of course in this case you're paying for REHL which is a commercial distro.
- EclipseAgent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Who says "beat" the Enterprise? How about one that is supported and written for the enterprise? One that isn't changed often except for Security Updates etc..
SLED would have been the way to go.. - db113456, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2EL5 is very stable, a tad old, but stable. Now "Red Hat will also be offering Level One, Level Two and Level Three technical support for this system." is very important, EL5 up2date does not work without valid tech support id number A.F.A.I.K.
- dhonn, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1xandros
- CovardeAnonimo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1here in brasil, HP's systems with linux costs from R$ 200 to R$ 300 (US$ 100 to US$ 150) less than the same machine with linux, depending on whic version of windows they ship.
just want to remind you people, that the monthly minimum wage here, is about R$ 400 (US$ 200). yes. windows here costs almost as much as the monthly minimum wage... - prammy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And what _exactly_ is wrong with EL5's package manager?
- srg13, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1And, you are not paying for a Windows license
- NedSlider, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Quote:
>>Red Hat EL5 package manager sucks BIG TIME
Really? I find RPM and yum to be a very powerful combination. What exactly sucks in your opinion and what benefits do you feel apt-get offers over RPM/yum as I find them pretty much functionally identical? - Tweakedenigma, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I think this is great, Lenovo Goes Sled, Dell goes Ubuntu, and HP goes RHEL makes me wonder who Acer will end up going with. But I think its awesome that 1 distro hasn't swept the board here. being an ubuntu Guy Im just gonna buy Dells, But I wouldn't be happy if that was what everyone was offering.
- dotancohen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Too bad here is Israel the opposite is true. Nobody, even in the national computer chain, have even heard of Linux. And that's amazing as Windows support for right to left text (our language is written right to left) is terrible, whereas in KDE the RTL support is excellent.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+4Unfortunately the majority of Linux users who post on forums have no idea of commercial reality compared to a hobbyist home system. Corporations who employ people to generate an income want stability and commercial support and not the latest and greatest unstable features. The difference between Red Hat and Ubuntu is certification. Red Hat has all the engineering skills and commercial certification. Red Hat is a commercial production OS, Ubuntu is a hobbyist OS. As an end user I would buy a computer with Red Hat pre-installed because of the Red Hat stability and engineering. I have used Ubuntu in the past; it is like driving a car in third gear. It does the job but not at the hardware's full potential on a genuine Intel manufactured and certified mother board.
Going the HP, Red Hat route means that the OS is fully optimised to the hardware. It is the same as Windows being fully optimised to the hardware instead of being a general purpose buggy system. - jacobdis, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I agree. I didn't know this was already happening in other countries. Very interesting. Do they offer a selection of distributions or are they currently limited?
- kelly, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Get a Macbook. or Macbook Pro.
Both hold their value very well - Renton, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2Or you know, download the live CD.
- thomashauk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0What if HP = Brown Sause?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0if you look at dell, the price of the linux systems are virtually the same as the windows ones.
- annenk38, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Question is, who is it being sold to? A reasonably experienced linux user will likely install his own favorite distribution anyway. A compete novice who does not intend to go into system internals would be better off with Ubuntu, or better yet Linspire. RH is a puzzling choice.
- euphemizeme, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1I didn't think it was very thoughtful or constructive.

- niallabrown, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0I'm glad they are using Redhat over Novell anyways.
- Technophobia, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0It would be nice if they also made all other computers compatible with Linux. Such as the m8150n that comes shipped with vista. The thing cant even run a live CD. Thanks HP :D
