you sure love your corporations don't you. I suppose everything that dosen't cost over $150 is worthless, so all you open source developers should just stop now because no one appreciates freedom anymore. - webcrumb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You could use winetools. It automates the download and install of Google Earth, along with other software like IE and Office. As the saying goes, it "fills in the gaps."

- wysiwia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Why not better ask Google to sponsor a cross-platform GoogleEarth?
http://wyoguide.sourceforge.net/index.php?page=earth.html
Besides cross-platform is the way to go. - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Haven't had much luck with Google Earth on Ubuntu Linux. I noticed that someone from their boards stated that they were able get it working but didn't give details.
- spybreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Or just use Windows like those of us who have a life and don't spend 23 hrs a day trying to get Linux to work and the other hour tossing off while watching Star Trek"
I save time by not having my to click through spyware/adware. Plus I don't have to deal with viruses, and cool WMF exploits.
Plus my system stays fast after it's been in use for a month. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Try building a copy of wine 0.9.4 if it won't work for you.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you have big problems with it try the wine application db on winehq
- NerveBand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1or use flashearth.com and view the world from there
- SpringBoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Great, but how practical is this really? Just a novelty for linux users?"
I assume it's as practical as running the program in Windows? Just like any program. I mean, really, what a stupid comment. - mrbean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I haven't tried this yet, but my success with wine has been mixed. I don't think an app of this size would run well at all...its too bulky. However, I did get mIRC 6.13 to run very well on wine.
- vwlee2011, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is a great story!
- barbobot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"+digg simply because the gentoo community is "more educated" in linux, than other distro support =p"
I reallly did cry, i laughed so hard at this - mepcotterell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No, as the name says, Wine Is Not a (CPU) Emulator (WINE). Wine just provides the Windows API. This means that you will need an x86-compatible processor to run an x86 Windows application, for instance from Intel or AMD. The advantage is that, unlike solutions that rely on CPU emulation, Wine runs applications at full speed. Sometimes a program run under Wine will be slower than when run on a copy of Microsoft Windows, but this is more due to the fact that Microsoft has heavily optimized parts of their code, whereas mostly Wine is not well optimized (yet). Occasionally, an app may run faster under Wine than on Windows. Most apps run at roughly the same speed.

I Agree.
@meowcow:
Same as coredump0x01 said. - skidooer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Why not better ask Google to sponsor a cross-platform GoogleEarth?"
Google Earth is cross-platform already. It's built using Qt and OpenGL. Both of which are supported across all the major platforms. The catch is to get Google to release the non-Windows versions. - Malachai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg
Not because I feel like doing this, but because the wiki is very thorough. - woncarloz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know how to get Rhapsody working in Wine? I know they have a Linux and Mac OSX Firefox plugin but would like to use the client as well.
- macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0he's right, let's all stop using linux & switch to windows
any ball park on the cost associated? nothing fancy, just a school computer used for wordprocessing, image edits, spreadsheet - randallb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0But then again, Google Earth just crashes for me when I try to actually run it. If it works for anyone, it probably won't be too stable.
- randallb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's not the easiest way!! Use Winetools. Google Earth is a choice in the "Install Tested Software" menu. Winetools will download the setup program for Google Earth and run it automatically. Get Winetools and Wine for your distro here: http://www.winehq.com/site/download
@wysiwia: wyoEarth looks good. I'll soon be sending Google a suggestion to support it. - mepcotterell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wine Is Not an Emulator

HAHA - MY FAVORITE COMMENT YET! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@masterdieff:
"Windows XP, when properly configured, is not full of spyware and viruses"
An OS and the programs shipped with it shouldn't be vulnerable to the heaps of exploits which continue to be documented.
It should work and not require tons of 3rd party lipstick on the pig closed source add-ons to scan/detect malware.
Enjoy your next $upgrade$, my Linux upgrades are free. - retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Wow, you really haven't tried Windows have you? Don't believe the BS put about by anti MS kids, give it a go, as my XP systems sound just like whatever you're running.
Seriously, if it was as bad as you make out, I wouldn't use it and neither would anyone else who relies on their computer to just work"
Your really an idiot and don't know what your talking about. Linux geeks grew up on Windoze, just as all comp users have. We grew OUT of Windoze, TIRED of the ***** headaches it gives.
Your statement that "Oh, IF it was that bad, Nobody would use it" is pure ludacris. By the same token, if Linux were as lame as you think it is, then there wouldn't be people like me getting pissed at your arrogance and defending it. You use Windoze because you like it, period. I use Linux because I like it, period.
Besides, what the ***** is it to you? Does it bother you that other people have opinions different than your own? Get over it. Linux Rules. 'nuff said. - popetorak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0same as MAC or lunix
- dognose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No digg, it didn't work for me. Not the first command, not the second and not the install. Even updated wine beforehand.
- bsoric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Its easy- sure
I have Windows on my laptop (have to- parents)
I've had to spend soooo much time configuring, and tweaking, just to stop it hanging for 5 minutes on startup.
My desktop run Linux. I spent a day or so configuring it, so that it would work right for me. It has not crashed once, except when I'm using Windows programs on Wine.
Interesting, no?
Feel free to use Windows if thats what you like. But don't say it's easier than linux. It's not. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"or get windows

so are most sluts, but that doesn't mean they're clean or reliable. - davs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0didn't work for me either.i only managed to install it, but it gets stuck at the splash screen.. no digg..
- spybreak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0HOW TO Whine
Just kidding
Try using emerge in Gentoo, not Ubuntu - popetorak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or get windows
its easy - macewan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0OK, installed it on Ubuntu Breezy this morning. Took some digging to get around some errors but it installs and runs.
Menus and navigation are barfed and disappear behind the map but Google Earth works fine. - FireRabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I got it to start but the UI is completly unusable, and the whole thing runs very slow.
Oh well.. no digg from me. - retr0spectiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0macewan: sounds like a joke to me. if you already use linux, and you like it, don't let other's opinion control how you feel.
Linux= 0$ + Time
Windoze= $100(OS)+$100(Office Suite)+$?00(everything else you need to Buy) + Time (Lots of it)
I'm really tired of weak minded individuals who feel its their way or the highway. I defend Linux, Open Source, and Freedom every chance I get.. but theres always going to be idiots out there who wish to be enslaved and don't appreciate choices in life. - Makyla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0wine? what? when they create google earth in beer let me know.
- hiro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Or just use Windows like those of us who have a life and don't spend 23 hrs a day trying to get Linux to work and the other hour tossing off while watching Star Trek
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I agree, google should just MAKE a linux version and be done with it.

I'm as nonconformist as the next geek, but please spare us your soapbox rant. Windows XP, when properly configured, is not full of spyware and viruses, and does not slow to a crawl after a month of use. Windows 95 and 98 did, and sometimes XP will if the user isn't smart enough. With today's operating systems, whether they be windows or Linux (and to a lesser extent older operating systems), all depend on the user. I've seen old "windoze" 98 installs work fine after a few weeks in the hands of someone who doesn't click every free ipod ad they see. Give the cleanest SP2-slipstreamed install to a user of normal or below-normal intelligence, and it'll be crashing in the same few weeks. Get off your high horse, you OS fanboy bitches. I have one thing to say about how easy to use or powerful your software is:
PEBKAC. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Great, but how practical is this really? Just a novelty for linux users?
- masterdieff, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Also Linux sucks.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0then what is it? I am not a linux user, so explain as if I AM a windows user. LOL
