- num3thod, on 08/05/2008, -4/+28What "other Linux Distro"?
/just kidding - jgtg32a, on 08/05/2008, -2/+19Linux is that some kind of Ubuntu?
--edit--
/jk - mickstephenson, on 08/05/2008, -1/+17If you'd rather not use a crappy MS filesystem I have a tutorial on Ubuntu forums for using ext3 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=740924
- Gavagai80, on 08/05/2008, -0/+14Thanks. When step one tells me to go out and buy and install windows, it makes a pretty poor linux guide.
- mpauley73, on 08/05/2008, -0/+11I've used UNetbootin and it is too simple. http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
UNetbootin allows for the installation of various Linux/BSD distributions to a partition or USB drive, so it's no different from a standard install, only it doesn't need a CD. It can create a dual-boot install, or replace the existing OS entirely.
UNetbootin can install to your local hard disk or make a bootable liveUSB drive. It can also load floppy/hard disk images, or kernel/initrds, or (some) ISO (CD image) files, for installing other distributions (~21). - mk3k, on 08/05/2008, -1/+11I really don't like these Nice! Awesome and Cool!!!! responses. It's what the digg button is for.
- iridesce, on 08/05/2008, -0/+10Great - have seen this at other places.
Gold star for the link for a persistent installation on a USB stick ( not from a USB stick ) - mickstephenson, on 08/05/2008, -0/+7He was obviously sent a shout by the author and added the comment to increase its popularity
- mithrasinvictus, on 08/05/2008, -1/+6Too bad you need to use the command line on windows, the windows devs really need to get their act together if they ever want to conquer the desktop.
- evillawngnome, on 08/05/2008, -0/+5This is a great mini howto; this information is actually pretty hard to track down. Googling for "linux from usb stick" will turn up thousands of pages on how to make a stick that boots into a persistent installation (mentioned in the first comment). Trying to figure out the isolinux / syslinux part from scratch seems overwhelming when there are (as we see in the tutorial) only two or three necessary steps. Good find op! Dugg.
- BalsamLane, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4UNetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/
Edit: I see mpauley73 already posted it, take a look, it is stupid a stupid simple gui that works like a charm. - trogdoor, on 08/05/2008, -0/+4Better to use ext2 or ideally jffs2 since the journaling will wear out the flash pretty quickly.
- santasing, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3The DVD drive in my desktop and old laptop is dead. This article couldn't have been more timely. Dugg.
- lickmyback, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3I have a USB pen drive on my keyring with a Debian installer that I use to build our servers with. Works great with blade servers that don't have CD a CD drive (or even an IDE header to hang one off), and is way faster than using a CD as well.
- Icetype, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4I just block everyone that says that. I don't see it as much anymore.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/05/2008, -0/+3There are a couple of distros "based" on Ubuntu (as in they use the Ubuntu codebase). So not totally inconceivable :D
- inactive, on 08/05/2008, -1/+4I hear that you can just install linux on anything even if its not a computer and that turns it into a computer. Is that true?
I have one of these
http://www.xgaming.com/two-player.shtml?__utma=1.4 ...
and I think if I put linux on it I should be able to play my games without a computer. My exboyfriend set up my windows so all I have to do is click the Mame icon he put on my desktop. He would know but I broke up with him because he is such an *****. I am sure you would need to put more computer stuff inside. I looked inside and there was a bunch of confusing wires but lots of room. Also, would you need some kind of a cord to hook it to the TV like my Wii? Can anyone help me do this or am I just crazy for thinking anyone could do something like that? - mickstephenson, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Persistant installation is easy, you just do a normal installation and select the usb drive, Hardy solves the issues with xorg config.
- mrsteveman1, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2A number of distros you can't actually just copy the files from the CD, because the kernel used to boot the installer lacks the kernel module for the vfat filesystem, so it can't read the stick once it boots. I think this is the case for the ubuntu server installer in fact.
They use a tiny initrd based installer i think, and its quite minimal, so it doesn't have the same modules the livecd installers have. - amenic, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Nevermind - I see now that's what he had originally and he simplified it. Neato.
- Reynardine, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3eeeXubuntu actually automates the process with a script: when you run the liveUSB install, there's a script you can execute to create a persistent installation on disc.
- mickstephenson, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2@trogdoor, you're right I will change the tutorial in the morning to ext2, unfortunately the syslinux package only has support for three filesystems iso9660, FAT and ext2/3. so ext is the only option.
- theaceoffire, on 08/05/2008, -0/+2Used this on a computer that was too old to boot from USB, had no cd or floppy.
Was able to download all the parts I needed for a full install of Xubuntu, no issues!
I highly suggest this. - TheWindBlows, on 08/05/2008, -1/+3lol i love your statement.
In linux this process can be done without a terminal. - theGOG, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I'm using an Eee Box right now, and you could probably do this with an SD card a lot easier, The default boot devices are the Hard Drive and the SD Card Adapter. Also, there's apparently a "hidden partition" which holds backup information and drivers for the Eee Box's hardware, if you delete it you can't reinstall Windows from their disc, and it'd be difficult to find the drivers as there are no downloads for them on the Asus web site as of late.
- MWeather, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1About the size of a CD-ROM.
- mk3k, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Works with other distros too?
The way it's written is just painful. - micro506, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1How else would you understand that Ubuntu's not the only Linuc it work with?!
- MWeather, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Just use one of the scripts from pendrivelinux.com, it's much easier. Just download the CD, put it in the directory with the script, and run it. Come back in 15 minutes and you have a Live USB of your favorite distro. It'll even do persistent mode.
I did just that this weekend to install Ubuntu on a PC with a broken DVD drive.
Unetbootin works too, but I couldn't get it working with Ubuntu Studio. I had to do the network install to get it running. - ElectricKetchup, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1unfortunately, his instructions only let you have one OS on the flash key to boot from at a time. I used to have my ipod shuffle setup to boot knoppix, one of the debian network installs, and a couple others with GRUB as the boot menu. It was kinda a pain in the ass to setup because with most of the boot cdroms or floppies, you have to modify the initrd scripts so that it looks in the correct place for the files it needs. I wish Ubuntu had a supported method to do it because it wouldn't be too hard, and would be nice to have it as one of the OSes I could boot from on my 4GB thumb drive.
- wigren, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I'm sorry, kernel.org!
- neasteflorin, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Well, sorry!
- enterneo, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1i use unetbootin to create the liveusb for installation.
- CATSCEO2, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1Really handy if you need to install on NanoITX boards. Some don't support disc drives, and you may not want to buy an external CD drive just to install the OS.
- trollick, on 08/05/2008, -1/+24chan? Buried for not knowing history of Digg memes.
- fulat2k, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1Thanks. Was just about to Google for a guide to setup USB within Linux itself.
- Luv5, on 08/06/2008, -0/+1How big of a thumb drive do you need for this type of setup?
- JKAL, on 08/05/2008, -0/+1I think some people here are missing the point, this is a how to install FROM a USB stick, not how to run ON a USB stick, yes there are many ways to run different OSs on a USB stick,
but installing from a USB is completely different.
Dugg, good article. - CGA1, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0Great tip!
- trollick, on 08/05/2008, -3/+3***** you. Two of my friends died because you blocked them.
- mobilemini, on 08/05/2008, -0/+0Hey it works!!! I've never seen this before thanks.
- douglaslondrina, on 08/07/2008, -0/+0Yes! You can! This is something really cool you sad. If it has enough room space into it you can buy a low-cost notebook like eeepc, disassembly it and put all the boards into your huge arcade joystick. You could install some linux distro, since the joystick is linux supported, and install a MAME emulator, this will work perfectly. OR you can install the Wii HomeBrew Channel and install a Mame emulator for your Wii and play with your joystick also. Your choise.
This would be a nice Mod! - Crana, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1trollick: Actually I was referring to 4chan because it's a more suitable place for dragging memes out until they become annoying as ***** -- aka repost of a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost of a repost.
- MWeather, on 08/06/2008, -1/+1If by 4chan, you mean "the internet", then you're right.
- JasonCox, on 08/05/2008, -2/+2In other news, Digg has discovered DSL; now with Unbuntu-Action(tm)!
- Crana, on 08/05/2008, -2/+1That "two of my friends died..." thing isn't funny any more, stop it or go back to 4chan
- CharlesSaint, on 08/05/2008, -3/+2Where the ***** did that POS saying originate?
- inactive, on 08/06/2008, -2/+0I have ubuntu and it sucks. Websites with flash randomly crash firefox, other programs randomly shut off for no reason, and half the programs that do work don't have sound for some mysterious reason. On the plus side, it's free.
- woundsofchrist, on 08/05/2008, -3/+0This is old. I've been booting my UBCD4WIN from my USB for over 18 months. They noted the same methods I used with my UBCD, which is a PE live OS. If you're a Linux user and not a typical Ubuntu user, then this should already be common knowledge. This is for n00bs.
