- WakeRider, on 07/28/2008, -7/+165'EPIC FAIL' does not even begin to describe this situation!!
- Rolcol, on 07/28/2008, -4/+161That avatar has "SAMPLE" stamped across it.
- Phocion55, on 07/28/2008, -5/+93I was almost expecting ptinsley's message to end in:
"I award you no points.....and may God have mercy on your soul." - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -2/+62Just answer "C".
The answer is always C. :D - NathanielJ, on 07/28/2008, -1/+47To everyone saying "what's the difference between using Google and forums?", the difference is that he posted the ENTIRE questionnaire on the forums and asked people to do it for him. He didn't just struggle with one question and ask for help on that question, he posted the entire thing.
Do you see a difference between telling someone else to write a book report for you versus reading the book yourself and writing it? If so, I don't see how you can't see a difference here. - YodaJones, on 07/28/2008, -5/+44That was a funny thread. bradcarr, you are busted dude. Shoulda done your own homework!
- JesseJay, on 07/28/2008, -4/+42Say "Google" again! Say "Google" again. I dare you! I double-dare you *****! Say "Google" one more goddamn time!
- Bicep, on 07/28/2008, -9/+44doh! Guess people really have a lot of faith in ubuntuforums.org! LOL
- funkyjunk3, on 07/28/2008, -3/+29Forums seem slow.
Mirror of relevant comment: http://i34.tinypic.com/2cfe8nc.jpg - inactive, on 07/28/2008, -4/+30This comment was almost as bad as "First!"
- stix213, on 07/28/2008, -3/+28Question 2: Who would have a name like "DickMasterson"
Answer 2: Fags! - clogmoney, on 07/28/2008, -4/+28Must resist inner geek telling me to post the answers to all the questions here.....
...ahhh beer! You come to my aid yet again! - danknerd, on 07/28/2008, -9/+33Well the word 'any' should never have been used, since perception and interpretation are in the eye of the beholder. I fault the employer on this one 100%, although bradcarr is a moron for using such a public forum, but he however did nothing wrong, since the word 'any' is very subjective and open.
It is like when my girlfriend says, "I love you so much.. I would do anything for you." Really sweetie? Anything? Then I gave her some extreme examples of anything and it turned into 'almost anything.' So do lesson learned: do NOT use the word 'any' unless you mean it, because going back on it, makes one look more foolish than the one who interprets the meaning of 'any.' - TnTBass, on 07/28/2008, -0/+22I can confirm this is 100% real. I read it on the internet.
- vortemenene, on 07/28/2008, -13/+36Man... I'm actually calling back a company that has asked me to interview for a soho/smb network/PC setup and repair gig, because I honestly feel that I'm not yet qualified for the job.
I bought a few books on Network+ and TCP/IP, and will be re-applying in a few more months after I gain a bit more knowledge and obtain some real-world, hands on experience.
Protip: Honesty is key because the truth will come out at some point in time. - KingGorilla, on 07/28/2008, -0/+20Unless the answer is B then go with B
- ligyron, on 07/29/2008, -0/+18Or epic win. Maybe ptinsley is bradcarr. He's getting the answers emailed to him!
- Asrrin29, on 07/28/2008, -2/+20if you actually read it you would see the employer says exactly that in his post. He was disappointed because instead of googling the answers or researching the questions, he posts the entire questionnaire and expects other people to do his job. this does not become a prospective employee at all.
- Spor, on 07/29/2008, -0/+17And did you learn your lesson about cheating Brad?
- inactive, on 07/28/2008, -0/+16Boy your a freshy... good luck finding a job. The majority of people who find the jobs they love excel under the pressure of learning things they haven't yet mastered.
- gordonrp, on 07/28/2008, -3/+19Forums seem to be crashing so I'll post it here

And "bradcarr" while you haven't broken the rules of my questionnaire you have definitely broken the spirit of the exercise. I did indeed say you could use any resource available to you, but didn't it cross your mind that this might be the wrong thing to do? I want to see the "real world" ability of a potential employee, not what they can recite in an interview but what they can come up with using their normal information sources to solve a problem or research a subject.
This has shown me that you won't take the initiative to research a problem, even when it might land you a job. I "googled" most of these questions before making the list and most of them are very easily discovered. It didn't seem to me that I was asking too much for people to use mailing lists, forums, IRC whatever to compile the answers themselves. I actually expected to see some questions show up on forums but I didn't expect someone to paste the entire thing and expect the forum users to do all the work that would qualify you for an interview. I think at this point you could save us all some time and not turn the answers back in, I already have the information I need on your answers.
As far as the rest of you, if there are any of you reading this thread that live in the Nashville area that want a network administration job with some Linux work feel free to shoot me your resume at paul.tinsley@lightningsource.com. Oh, while you are at it, go ahead and send me the answers to the questions - thegrantman, on 07/28/2008, -1/+17 The employers response was priceless. I'll bet he was laughing as he typed it.
- jimfeet, on 07/28/2008, -4/+19In my book, being an expert at something isn't a matter of knowing it all, but a matter of knowing where and how to find it. Posting a question on a forum seems like a legitimate way to quickly solve a problem.
As a manager, I don't care HOW my guys get an answer, I care about GETTING the answer. My guys need to be sufficiently knowledgeable in their subject to be able to distinguish between a correct (or potentially correct) answer and one that is off in left field. But asking questions seems to me to be a valid way to find the answer.
Another point worth considering - asking questions of someone more knowledgeable than yourself is how you learn. - gfxlonghorn, on 07/29/2008, -2/+17I feel bad for your wife.
- robbyjo, on 07/28/2008, -0/+15Here's the questions (copied from the first page). They're not hard.

11. What is the maximum length of CAT6
12. How does one set up a layer two link to share VLANs

20. Given a radius server at 10.0.0.2 and a shared key of ‘abc123’ show the IOS commands necessary to authenticate switch users against the radius server, while still allowing the use of local username / password pairs - Caleb83, on 07/28/2008, -2/+16never go ass to mouth.
- Loonacy, on 07/28/2008, -0/+13plz send me teh codez!
- TnTBass, on 07/28/2008, -0/+13I Google'd "mother *****"
btw, do not do that while at work.
I think, perhaps, Googling the questions asked on the interview questionnaire might lead to better results. - bot001220, on 07/28/2008, -0/+11You're applying for a job. Use common sense; that "any" does not literally mean "anything" as you just described. Remember that "anything" can encompass illegal activity as well.
If you're the kind of person who needs to have every message perfectly explained to you like you're a 5 year old, you probably are the wrong person for the job (just like this bradcarr guy.) - thrallie, on 07/28/2008, -1/+12Spire that sounds great but it doesn't work that way in real life. Certs are required in a lot of jobs I have applied for. How can you market yourself as having experience you don't have?
- sysop073, on 07/28/2008, -0/+11Well then allow me to retort!
- EtherGnat, on 07/28/2008, -1/+12Could you give me the answers? ;)
- Grub, on 07/28/2008, -0/+11I was kinda shocked to see the name "Bradcarr" being my name is Brad Car. I had to go back and reread it for a second XD
- MadHarvey, on 07/28/2008, -0/+11There is a conversion formula for these "tricky" exams:
True = yes = Si = C - Aurabolt, on 07/29/2008, -0/+11"Just answer "C".
The answer is always C. :D"
I beg to differ, sir:
http://www.collegehumor.com/article:1730017 - inactive, on 07/29/2008, -1/+11The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he, who in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
- LGod, on 07/28/2008, -1/+11Why would you tell them you are not qualified? Let them make that decision. If you are willing to learn then go for it and pick up the rest on the job. And anyway, if this is based on the job description vs. your skill, then job descriptions are are usually overblown BS fluff.
- EtherGnat, on 07/28/2008, -5/+15I'm not sure I see the problem. He was told he could use any resource available, and a forum isn't that much different than Google--in fact in many cases it's more efficient. I give prospective employees (general tech support generally) problems to solve, although they're generally more open ended. I couldn't care less if they used forums, I'm more interested in the quality of their answer and their process to arrive at their conclusion. The only problem I'd have is if he lied about using forums.
Basically if the guy wanted to test his existing knowledge he should have given him a monitored test on the premises. If he says that all sources can be used he shouldn't be surprised if people do something like this. I'd say the problem is with the methodology, although the applicant is a bit of a putz for posting all the questions with no potential answers. - Vadi0, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10Oi! No AA burrrrns my eyes.
Are you on windows? - prodevel, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10I used to be an HP/UX and mostly Solaris admin. Took 5 min. to rattle off the one's I "knew" and it's been a few years since I've been on a Solaris box.
These are NOT linux answers.
1. ls -1 | wc -l
2. lsof -i TCP
3. etc/rc dirs
4. df -k
5. who/syslog, et al
6. cp -rp
7. ifconfig
8. ps -ef | grep httpd
9. pkginfo -l
10. meh
11. 100 meters
12. ifconfig stuff
13. hub sprays, switch streams "learns", router can NAT/modify packets (Intelligence)
14. switch isolates data, preventing every computer from being able to packet sniff.
15. telnet www.google.com(or localhost) 80
GET /
16. meh
17. UDP can drop packets (~stateless)
18. meh
19. No TTL?/ STP?
20. meh
And yes, the said to use _any_ resource available to him... He probably phrased it like that.
Most interviews I've been involved in just ask Johnny-on-the-spot questions during the interview itself. - Caleb83, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10The context the manager used that sentence, it suggested to me that he very well welcomed the idea of using linux forums to get answers. What was cheap was making a thread that said "Here's stuff I need answered, answer it for me"
- cyrix, on 07/28/2008, -0/+10Which is exactly why their population is dwindling. We need to get these GNU/Linux guys out there to meet some women so that their ranks can increase!!!
- AwsmGy, on 07/28/2008, -1/+10I'm curious to know exactly how the boss found out; hilarious none the less.
- maceelk, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9"That depends on what your definition of the word "is" is."
~You know who - BedPost, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9Note: This strategy may not work so well on true/false exams.
- NathanielJ, on 07/28/2008, -4/+13You don't see the difference between researching something yourself on the internet versus posting the entire questionnaire and asking others to fill it out for you?
- chaoswings, on 07/28/2008, -1/+10It always amazes me how incapable people are at using Google. The only people who are worse then them are those that ask for medical advice online. I'm not talking about doing something like researching a disease....I'm talking about threads that go something like "I broke my leg just now should I put ice on it?". Go and Google it, you will be amazed.
- s0nicfreak, on 07/28/2008, -0/+9Yeah this seems to me the guy is just "using his resources" - his resources just happened to include forums.
