I'm excited as everyone about Chrome OS, but let's wait for something new to emerge rather than digging sites that just regurgitate. - novaprosp3kt, on 07/09/2009, -15/+38Google chrome is chargin its lazer!
- charlescva, on 07/09/2009, -13/+33I don't get it. The Google Blog says that it is clear that users want their email faster with less hassle and all that jazz... I would like to know who in 2009 is having so much trouble checking their email and getting online? The main thing that slows you down is network routing and web servers being overloaded. As neato as this OS sounds... the fact is that it will probably have driver issues, will not perform gaming worth a ***** and will have nothing but half ass working open sourced apps available. (with the exception of chrome and open office and few other very well maintained apps) It may reboot from desktop to desktop in 25 seconds... but what good is that when you can't even watch a streaming netflix during your lunch break?
In addition to all of that, I tested Windows 7 out around 4 months ago and it was pretty smooth and had no driver issues... I have not tested the Release Candidate but I have heard nothing but extremely positive reviews, including benchmark scored rubbing out XP. At work I use Ubuntu because it works better than windows with the environment i work in (Trusted Desktop). But the fact is for a home user (and everyone else i work with), for gaming, work, compatibility and ease of use... Windows 7 is going to take the market. And the market is Desktops and Laptops. Netbooks are nice... but when it comes to people who actually have ***** to do and not just dicking around on the Internet all day, they are pretty useless. - damnshoes, on 07/09/2009, -11/+27..……………………….„~"¯¯¯”~„

Now you and I both know these are going to get you dugg up, but you know that I know this and actually want me to digg you down, but you've already predicted that I'll work this out, so actually I'm going to do just the opposite, I'll digg you up.
Unless, of course, you knew that the chance of someone looking this deeply into it with the addition of the two reverse psychology comments above would get you dugg up, as you secretly intended all along. You're a sly one, I'll give you that.
But now if I digg you down, there's a chance you may have predicted this move, and if you predicted it with such accuracy, I never truly had a choice. Am I so easily predictable? If my fate is already set in stone does that mean choice is nothing but an illusion? These are just some of the questions you have made me ask myself. I would thank you for this, but I feel you already know how grateful I am. You are clearly a very smart man.
Now, on to your fate. Do you get dugg up, or dugg down? I feel as though I'm cornered in a game of chess. Which move, if any, will be the winning one? I feel that the only way out of this dilemma would be to not make a move at all. Though you may have predicted this, it doesn't help your strategy either way.

- insertAliasHere, on 07/09/2009, -2/+10I think you guys are missing the point. It won't have a lot of native app support, because it's not intended to. It's designed to be web-focused. Low impact, fast booting, get me to the web right away OS. Not something you're going to be running GIMP on, or games, or anything like that.

How is gizmodo formed? - DiscoUnderpants, on 07/09/2009, -2/+7There are differences between ARM processors but the instruction set will be the same(the differences are in things like clock speed etc)... I see no reason that Chrome OS would not run on a DS... there is already a linux distro for the DS(google DSLinux)... Its really down to google or some interested party making sure it works(drivers could be an issue etc etc etc)...

- N01SE, on 07/09/2009, -0/+4HTML 5 is not going to be prominent by next year. It will only become prominent once IE and the standards boards get off their asses and get things moving (prominent as in widespread usage). Nothing will be different from the web you see now and the web using HTML 5 with the exception of offline storage. Plus the scenario you presented can be done with any OS now, how would that be any drastically different, you don't need Chrome OS to use any of Googles' apps.

- tackle, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3O RLY? What about Opera on DS, Wii and a plethora of mobile devices?
- N01SE, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3You don't need Chrome OS to use any of Googles' apps.
So for the most part, the OS seems to be another mechanism to make their brand synonymous with the web, nothing more.
HTML 5 is not going to be prominent by next year. It will only become prominent once IE and the standards boards get off their asses and get things moving (prominent as in widespread usage). Nothing will be different from the web you see now and the web using HTML 5 with the exception of offline storage and a little less flash. - inactive, on 07/10/2009, -0/+3why do people use IE? because it gets launched when they click "internet"
why do google want to launch a full OS? because office will = google docs, IM = google messenger, mail = gmail
The article really seams to have missed the clues about chromeOS.
1) new windows system
.'. NO-X11
.'. no compatibility with most linux GUI software
.'. gives google much more control over the OS, while allowing easy porting of welldesigned apps
2) cross-arch = almost all 3rd party code will be interpreted
.'. Most 3rd party code will be javascript (web apps w/ html5 + google gears + etc for offline use) with some java (googles own?), python (googles fast python?)
.'. this gives google plenty of control over the VM
So basically you have:
A new OS, this is no conventional distro
A very open OS, not only will the core be OSS but all webapps are source-readable (ofc the flash/air stuff is somewhat more closed)
A very secure OS, everything 3rd party is running in a VM (1) nothing needs to run as root 2)even malware can be protected against). This means that towards real world
threats (including malware) it can be MORE secure than conventional linux or even bsd desktops ever could be!
A low maintinance OS, there is very little to maintain and your grandma can offload all of that to google.
A fast OS, currently even a fullscreen browser pays overheads for various things (windowing system, desktop enviroment, retrofited security etc) in boot time and
performance, this can/will run 1) a striped down kernel 2) a web rendering engine 3) a javascript VM 4) a limited set of system processes
(powermanagement,networkmanagment)
Netbooks that are good at what they do, ARM is the correct arch to be using for netbooks, we only use x86/x86_64 for this legacy cruft (windows+flash(but they are
partnered with adobe to sort that))
This is not the OS for me, I like my OS secured(and tweaked) for me, by me. (I guess most geeks are under this catigory)
This is not the OS for gamers, but hey how much can you game on a netbook anyway!?
This is not the OS for photoshop/blender geeks, but hey how much can you edit on a netbook anyway!?
however for 3/4 of people out there this is perfect.
If they ever spin off an office version its ideal for offices aswell, screw paying for 100s/1000s of desktops+software, setup all your clients to be running chromeOS and
add a couple of powerful local apps servers, maintain the server (where ALL your confidential data) and your done.
This isn't really an attack on microsoft as much as its a way to exploit a booming market and get more customers. Why is windows the no1 os? because it took advantage of
the boom in IBM-clone sales, once it was there it gets more complicated. This aims to make google the no1 web app provider (well they are anyway but as an evil
coorporation of doom you can never have too much power)! If microsoft brought us a PC on every desktop (a debatable point), google will bring us an ad on on every
document. - dragossh, on 07/09/2009, -1/+4An operating system is a kernel and a set of applications that helps the user interact with it. It's still their OS, no matter what kernel they use.
- wejmahtin, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3how is it takin them this long to package Yet Another Linux Distribution...
- Kirsle, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3Chrome has a "new windowing system" -- does this mean no X11? Something new? I poked at Android and saw no sign of anything to do with X11, so Google's probably either going to reuse Android's windowing system or make yet another new one.
- mr100percent, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3It's not that they're referring to, but the awful slow startup time for Windows on a netbook. Immediately all this cruft starts loading; taskbar icons, printer drivers, IM clients, and it takes well over a minute from pressing the power button to getting a google homepage.
If google can get me a browser open within 30 seconds of booting, I'll consider this a win. - wejmahtin, on 07/09/2009, -0/+3it's linux. it better be open source...
- dwhitbeck, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3Never argue with a Sicilian when death is on the line.
- shamanking911, on 07/09/2009, -4/+6A lot of people are missing the point of this OS. It's meant to get you on the web in a matter of seconds, optimized for web usage. By 2010, HTML 5 should be more prominent, making Chrome OS more useful. It's not a jack of all trades like the rest of the OS's out there.
A professor who only uses a netbook as a powerpoint could be using Chrome OS. According to Google's blog, they want you to be able to access your information from wherever you are, so the professor could make the powerpoints at home and use them in class without trasnfering anything. - wejmahtin, on 07/09/2009, -1/+3it .. is linux...
- MScrip, on 07/09/2009, -0/+2But grandma is already checking her e-mail and browsing a few websites. She's just doing it in a web browser running on a full OS.
Sure, it might be a waste to use a full blown install of Windows if she's only gonna be in the browser all day long... but that's what she's used to.
Are future computers gonna be stripped down web-terminal internet appliances? God I hope not...
My mom has a 15" laptop, and she spends 99% of the time in a browser. But, she also plays games and prints labels and business cards in Printmaster or whatever. Although the web is a big part of people's lives... it's not everything. -
