- cx0der, on 03/26/2009, -2/+34The article sounded like a sales pitch for his book at the end!
- buddyw, on 03/26/2009, -9/+37Linux sucks.
I still can't get Conficker to run in wine. - dogfood, on 03/26/2009, -3/+22There are forums to help you out with that you know........
- AntoniusMaximus, on 03/26/2009, -1/+18I thought 65% was actually a pretty conservative figure.
- AntoniusMaximus, on 03/26/2009, -0/+17XP is the best Windows; Try Ubuntu because it's as good as XP if not better; Buy my book plz kthx
Done. - bruenig, on 03/26/2009, -6/+23"If you do decide to give Ubuntu a try, consider getting my book: Ubuntu Pocket Guide and Reference. This is a compact yet comprehensive guide to day-to-day Ubuntu use. You can download it for free from the above link, or purchase a printed copy for $12.99 from Amazon."
Ahahahaha. Now we see what that post was about. - thedragon4453, on 03/26/2009, -2/+19I love Ubuntu as much as the next guy, but that was a crap article.
Summary. People love XP. Install Ubuntu, its easy. Buy my book. The end. - secrity, on 03/26/2009, -0/+15I think that 9.04 gets released on Apr 23rd.
- AdmiralAcbar, on 03/26/2009, -0/+15Is it really only a month away? Man, time flies...
- madman1337, on 03/27/2009, -0/+14have you tried the latest client manager for wifi in Ubuntu? Its just as simple as the one with Vista.
- benbrooks101, on 03/26/2009, -4/+17Ubuntu is not a 'special' version of linux. It's a distribution, like every other single Linux based OS.
Basically, What i'm trying to say is Ubunutu != Linux and Linux != Ubuntu. - ryan83189, on 03/26/2009, -2/+15Need compelling proof?
Myspace, youtube... - mpn401, on 03/26/2009, -5/+17Ubuntu still needs a decent hardware manager and better wireless support. ndiswrapper is a last resort, not a solution!
- svensko, on 03/26/2009, -2/+13Giving Linux that "XP" factor would turn it into a high-risk, security-hole ridden, unstable POS. No Thanks!
- RobynG7, on 03/27/2009, -2/+13Well keep in mind that Windows 1 or 2 versions ago was better than Windows today.
- dbz253, on 03/26/2009, -1/+12uneducated to the dangers of ie and the other options available? most definitely. people don't feel like they have a reason to care, so they remain uneducated.
- chadsmith729, on 03/26/2009, -2/+13XP support is going to go away eventually.
I have a solution for your XP woes. Unless you've been lobotomized, you might think you've guessed what it is: Linux. But you would be wrong. I don't generally recommend Linux. I recommend Ubuntu. You see, Ubuntu is a special version of Linux. Ubuntu is Linux for human beings. That's their tag line, in fact, and it needs some explanation.
Essentially, if you don't want to go to Vista or 7 then give Ubuntu a try. - philkav, on 03/26/2009, -2/+13tl;dr . I've ***** to do, anyone want to summarize that for me?
- JoeCool1986, on 03/27/2009, -1/+11Except that the book is free
- madman1337, on 03/27/2009, -0/+10there have been some recent upgrades to compatibly of on-board wifi chipsets. I used to struggle getting them to work correctly, but now days its pretty simple, especially with the latest broadcomm drivers. also, ubuntu includes a different wifi client so its easier to connect than what it was before.
- madman1337, on 03/27/2009, -1/+11I've gotten Steam to run through WINE. Ran CS:S fine.
- watcht, on 03/26/2009, -0/+10Pulling stats out of your ass is the new trend these days don't you know?
- shinkou, on 03/27/2009, -1/+10Dugg for "Only the uneducated use Internet Explorer nowadays".
- cannonball, on 03/27/2009, -0/+9are you suggesting vista is better than xp?
- mctom987, on 03/26/2009, -2/+11Yes
http://www.winehq.org/ - secrity, on 03/27/2009, -0/+8It is scheduled for a bit less than a month away -- on April 23rd
- jahurt, on 03/27/2009, -0/+7Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu.
- nullity, on 03/27/2009, -0/+7Seriously though, are you a 9 year old, or do you run a child labor camp where you force 9 year olds to install and configure operating systems?
- benbrooks101, on 03/26/2009, -2/+8Less than a month.
9.04 = 4th month 2009
I'd say about 10-15 days. - inactive, on 03/26/2009, -6/+12I like Linux, I like Ubuntu, I like XP. I hate Vista. OS X is irrelevant to me as I would never buy anything from the Apple Church. (Money spent on Apple products goes straight to Scientology. Spread the rumor!) Anyway, I've been using Windows 7 Betas, 7000, 7048, 7057, since January and I love it. Unless MS really screws up, Windows 7 is going to be great.
- Culyt, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6The Linux kernel's wifi stack had a complete overhaul a version or 2 ago, Network manager has had many wifi improvements and also there are OpenSource broadcom drivers (which is one of the most popular chipsets, not sure if its in the kernel yet though). And companies like Dell are selling Linux laptops, So things have defiantly improved.
- Fratz, on 03/27/2009, -1/+7http://appdb.winehq.org
- watcht, on 03/26/2009, -1/+7Not really what's great about open source is how all can look around for any security gremlins and bugs and post fixes for em. More people to help out sounds like a great thing to me.
- ijmok, on 03/27/2009, -1/+7Vista upgrade?
people are still doing that?
windows 7 will be out late this year / early next,
Even the beta is fantastically useable, crash free and even doing reasonably well on the compatibility front, even vista is far better than it gets credit for,
In not saying either are perfect but there not that bad honestly.
Ill agree with the wifi issues, but then again that was a while back so maybe I will give Linux another go - Daemastrius, on 03/27/2009, -0/+6sudo GTFO
- nullity, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5And give me a pony!
- Culyt, on 03/27/2009, -2/+7"...you know when Windows was actually usable."
- glinsvad, on 03/26/2009, -1/+6Release candidate Apr 16 - it's usually the exact same iso as the final release
- raldz, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5free to download.. not bad.. sold!
- bootup, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5It was. No doubt. It wasn't like he hid it though. The other thing is you haven't heard Microsoft's marketing lately if you think that is bad. Microsoft make outrageous claims. Straight out lies really. Did you know that MS Windows is faster on netbooks than GNU/Linux? or that MS Windows is compatible with more hardware than GNU/Linux? These are false statements. GNU/Linux is compatible with more hardware than MS Windows. In fact out of the box it has the largest compatibility ecosystem of any operating system that has ever existed. For instance if you wanted to hook up an HP printer the entire HP line is basically supported out of the box. You can't get that from MS Windows. With MS Windows you have to stick a CD. WAIT! No CD-ROM drive you say? Ops, that'll be another $80. Now you need MS Office? Ops, that's another $100 for a ram upgrade. Now you need anti-virus software? Woo, it's getting awfully expensive here. Chances are you are going to buy the Norton 360 for $70. You are already up to $250. I hope you don't need help installing all this cause that'll be at least another $40 for just the basic installation package. If want more than one peace of software loaded that'll be $70 please. You've already doubled the price of the netbook and you still haven't purchased that warranty they always pitch. Now you are looking at another $100 minimum for that. So- lets see. For a $300 GNU/Linux netbook to get the equivalent you'll have paid $400 more. That's not twice the price. That is SIGNIFICANTLY more than twice the price. This is assuming the netbook works out of the box with MS Windows. Every customer I've had who bought a MS Windows netbook has needed the OS reloaded out of the box. It is sad to say- but MS Windows is not the perfect OS everybody makes it out to be.
- earthforce1, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Addendum to my last post: The FIRST JAUNTY BETA IS UP!!!

Give me a person that can tell the difference between good & crap
Give me a person that doesn't make asinine comments - XFi6, on 03/27/2009, -0/+5Daemastrius is not in the sudoers file. This incident will be reported.
- reqage, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4Yes. Keep in mind there are many distros out there. Fedora, Mandrivia, and SUSE. Virtualization tools are useful for picking the one you want to stick with.
- watcht, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4Oh what a witty basement comment. I enjoy both linux and windows for their respected usages. I understand there's more end users who are just that users and nothing more, but you never know maybe some of them could be interested in learning something different. Wishful thinking probably, as for fanboisim no...truly I don't care what the people use.
- sapient2003, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4A few days ago I installed Ubuntu 8.10 on my friend's new Compaq cq50 laptop. By default it wanted to use the ath9k drivers, which did not work. But after a minute using Google I found out I could use the ath5k driver by using the kernel backports. The driver works wonders. We even got it to work with airsnort-ng without patching the driver, which kicked ass. Anyway, I am sure all of your laptops' wireless cards work, you are just too lazy to do a simple Google search query to find an easy-to-do solution.
- Kestrel, on 03/27/2009, -7/+11Is it here? Is this the "year of linux"... again? /s.
- Tenoq, on 03/27/2009, -0/+4XP has (extended) support until 2014. All versions.
